First Video from South Africa!!

Hi All

EDIT: I removed the video because of complaints about the fast driving.. and not wanting to get into an argument.... then I thought "Bugger that.. I know how fast I was driving and although it may LOOK fast... it ISN'T"...

I'm kind of hooked on my Go-Pro and used to make LOADS of driving clips when I was modding my previous car (E46 M3, AA supercharged)..

anyhow... here's the first of many.. some nice shots of my beautiful city, Cape Town, on the tip of South Africa.. and some driving of course :)

M@!

kendalldwhite 08-31-2012 10:30 PM

very nice!

Style 09-01-2012 03:16 AM

Nice! Sooo crazy how South Africa is sooood damn modernized compared to all the other parts of the continent. You consider your self African or South African?

MattQ-WP 09-01-2012 03:44 AM

South African :)

The rest of the continent is a bit scary!!

MacTec 09-01-2012 05:18 AM

First, massive congrats on the car. Second, Watched the vid.... How long before you post the one where you smash up someone's rear or kill someone while driving like a lunatic on public roads in traffic?

Clever editing my arse.... Or are you the only one to drive at the speed limit and every one else goes that much slower?

So is Johannesburg! I love South Africa, and have close family there, but the crime in Jo'burg is a bit much. Cape Town is wonderful, and I love the vid! I'd sure like to rip through the Garden Route in a GT86/BRZ. One of the mountain roads into Franchoeck is one of the most incredible I've driven -- too bad I was stuck in a Nissan Tiida (Versa)!

MattQ-WP 09-04-2012 06:32 AM

I deleted the video after MacTec got his knikkers in a knot

#87 09-04-2012 06:42 AM

Just make it private

MattQ-WP 09-04-2012 08:39 AM

I put it back :)

Thanks Dude... yeah the start of the garden route is an easy 4 hour drive for us so we often head up for the weekend.

I love going up every year for the oyster festival and the kids LOVE the forest in Knysna.

I'll do a clip in the next couple of weeks on Franschoek pass... the weather is finally turning :happyanim:

MattQ-WP 09-05-2012 04:49 AM

Glad to see people enjoying the clip :) I'll try and head out into the country in the next few days and get some more images... there is snow on the mountains near Cape Town so hopefully I can get out there

themadpants 09-06-2012 12:17 PM

Nice! I grew up in Bergvliet in the southern suburbs. I know those roads in the clip well. Don't worry about the haters, you were definitely not speeding excessively. :iono:

This car reminds me of my days in CT, but we were into the VW MK1's back then (Of course!)

This reminds me, I need to go back for a vacation, it has been 6 years!

MattQ-WP 09-06-2012 12:45 PM

There's no place like home dude.. and CT really has gone from strength to strength.. I travel extensively.. done CA.. LA.. DC.. NYC... London, Malaysia and Mauritius in the last few years.. and I gotta say this city really is something special.. globally... voted best run municipality ON EARTH last year!! we beat a Swiss town which is quite something!!

Rawdog 09-07-2012 12:29 AM

What can a white gentleman like yourself possibly be doing in south africa? never got that

#87 09-07-2012 12:32 AM

Rawdog 09-07-2012 12:35 AM

About 20 years ago, a white South African immigrant checked the "African American" box on his law school application, and it caused quite the fuss. I don't know whether he suffered any consequences.

Keeping the country from ending up like the rest of the continent.

Hey.. someone has to earn money to cover the benefit payments that the vast majority enjoy.

After all, as a white south africa male I get zero benefits, job offers, legal, medical or education assistance... I am perpetually blamed for everything that goes wrong on the continent (since it was CLEARLY all the fault of my ancestors) and I get to put up with comments like yours as an added bonus.

oh yeah... and I pay 42% tax, have to use private hospitals since there is no public service anymore.. have to use private schools since there is no public service anymore...

but here the rub up

I LOVE my country.. I love the wide open spaces, the freedom, the incredible sense of oneness amongst all it's people.. across all racial and cultural barriers.. don't believe the hype that CNN sells you.. we are actually getting on just fine.. and besides a few isolated incidents and a few close minded racists on both sides of the fence, the majority of us are amongst the most liberal and open minded people on the planet.

sure I get a rough ride here being a "whitey".. but Karma is a bitch and the settlers sure left us with a load to deal with.

I love the fact that we can still break the rules here and get away with it, that we are not the bitch boys of the US like most of the Northern Hemisphere and that we still have clean air, water and soil.

THAT my friend, is why I am here, why my children are here and why we will stay here.

I was born in Africa. My father was born in Africa. My grand, great grand and great great grandfathers were born and lived in South Africa.. our blood has been here since the country was formed. Since before even the Xhosa's arrived from North of the blood river... we've been here.

Hell I'm as African as any of the African's and I'm certainly WAAAAAAYYYY more african (lower case) than the silly and rather tame bright trainer wearing baggy pants so called african American's who seem to think they are all connected with "African consciousness" and "mother Africa"... don't make me laugh... they wouldn't even know what end of a spear you put in a Kudu.. I've killed a Kudu with my bare hands and a hunting life... I've eaten raw Spingbok liver after the hunt.. I can start a fire with sticks and build a hunting shelter in under 2 hours... take your average african American and put him back in mother Africa and he'll cry like a little baby within 24hrs

I dare you to not call me African... now you know what I'm doing here

quick question... what are you doing in America? You name doesn't sound Cherokee

:respekt:

Nice one boet!

That must have been early morning? Unusual to see so few cars on the pass.

This thread is making me home sick!

there is a great 180 hairpin between Grabouw and Villiersdorp, with a very wide shoulder to drift on... I've done it just once so far but with the traction control on. I can imagine it must be a lot of fun with all the electronics off...

Vladror 09-19-2012 12:33 AM

second vid of the same pass but in the other direction and my friend now driving: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_QSot_FInU"]franschhoek pass 2 - YouTube[/ame]

Well put.
South Africa sounds like a badass place with actual genuine culture unlike where I live. At least this dumb tourist hot spot they call Destin, Florida

Reyns 09-19-2012 01:46 PM

Hay man
I recently joined the forum, you will see this is my first post. I wanted to meet more people with a 86 in South Africa and its awesome you are in cape town. When can we meet up and chat? Ps i love the vids - next time i want to join!

RueFT86 09-19-2012 02:16 PM

Nice one bud. Cape Town is an awesome place. I've gotten my 86 last weekend. Maybe I will make a trip to Cape Town and we can hook up. I'm in Jozi

Reyns 09-19-2012 05:26 PM

Hay that sounds like a good idea!!!
Cape town is awesome but Jozi has everything available to you! I have my 86 for a month and a half and im on 4600km that how much im enjoying it.

Vladror 09-20-2012 12:03 AM

@RueFT86: i bought mine in joburg cause i couldn't find local stock and drove it to cape town. You'll be pleasantly surprised when you come down how much more power the car seems to have at sea level...

Reyns 09-20-2012 12:36 AM

You from Cape Town as well!!! We should all get together some time. I have some concerns about the car that i would like to question you guys about.

Thanks dude :)

We are a passionate lot down here... we've been through political and criminal hell and have managed to pull our proud country back from the brink.. funny thing is our capital cities are on a par or better than many of the large European cities I've visited... just much fresher feeling.. and our small towns are pretty much like any small truck stop you'd see in Texas... I have many friends who arrived years ago as tourists and couldn't leave.. this will be the wild west for a long time and freedom is a drug that once tasted.. you never want to stop having it :)

Man nice video. And fantastic landscapes, not to mention the road. Damn that's a very nice place!

Chad 09-25-2012 12:04 PM

Nice video man glad you're posting these. Too bad there are a bunch of grandpa's on here who get their panties in a knot about "fast" driving... "Oh my you're going to kill someone oh no, you should post the video of you crashing..." at not point in this video did you look out of control at all.

Besides if I made a video in my city it would look like i'm going twice the speed limit but in fact I rarely actually speed it's just everyone else is driving 20km/h under the limits so it appears i'm driving fast..

I can't stand it when people just assume things on these forums when they see someone driving spiritedly and besides, who cares if you are speeding? It's your car your choices, the rest is for law enforcement to enforce not some old fart on a forum.

Anyways enough ranting lol... keep up the vids i enjoy them they're what's keeping me going until I get my FR-S in the spring..

Cheers :happy0180:

Crewzern 09-25-2012 03:03 PM
