Is it possible to make this car sound like LFA?

As the title says. I love the super fast high revving, high pitched sound of super cars. Is it even possible to make this car sound like that?

Zaggeron 08-24-2012 09:34 PM

What about the woo woo guy?

Superhatch 08-24-2012 09:39 PM

Sure.

Stronger, lightened, balanced and blueprinted internals. Raise rev limit to 9k, super light flywheel, one off exhaust tuned by Yamaha (or just a custom piece in general).

I think it's possible, it would just cost a grip of cash.

Jason 08-24-2012 09:40 PM

Put a CD with LFA acceleration runs in radio. Crank up the volume :burnrubber:

baldolera 08-24-2012 09:40 PM

Drop the 1LR into the FR-S, and done. Anything can be one with cash. However no 4 cyl will sound like a V10 that sounds like an old F1 car.

xjohnx 08-24-2012 09:41 PM

It's easy. All you have to do is he 1LR-GEU swap.

Superhatch 08-24-2012 09:43 PM

Oh yeah...you also have to mate together 1.5 more FA20's somehow.

jm1681 08-24-2012 09:50 PM

To me, thinking about it from a sound engineering standpoint, I don't see any reason that an exhaust can't be tuned to dampen low frequencies, and amplify high frequencies.

No, it will never sound like an LFA. Of COURSE it will never sound like an LFA. The differences between the two engines is too big to even comprehend.

However, I still don't see any real reason why an exhaust can't be tuned to narrow the frequency/tone to the mid-high end. It would take time and money to develop I'm sure, but ultimately, it HAS to be possible.

Shit, Kreissieg tunes for sound, and pretty much ONLY for sound. I'd love to see what they might come up with for this car.

this thread is very very pointless...

industrial 08-24-2012 09:55 PM

Well, if anyone can do it, it'd probably be Nameless. You should look up their Genesis 3.8r exhaust, that thing sounds beastly.

Why is it pointless?

Granted, the OP could have asked for a high-pitched exhaust sound a little differently, but really, what is pointless about wanting your car to sound a certain way?

Mr.Jay 08-24-2012 10:01 PM

I laughed and then I cried at this thread.

Not sure if serious but I do love me the lfa exhaust. F1 at its best for the street

djliquidsteele 08-24-2012 10:06 PM

I'm totally serious. I know it will never be exact, but I know Ferrari spent a ton of time tuning the exhaust to get a certain sound, as I'm sure Toyota did with the LFA. What I think would make it possible as jm1681 said, is dampen the lowend and accentuate the high end, make it very very fast revving, and you're very close to there.

Superhatch 08-24-2012 10:14 PM

Its not just sound. It's how insanely fast the car revs. Many small pistons revving very fast. We just couldn't ever duplicate it. If you lightened everything up, strengthened everything, and then on top of that got a custom exhaust which was tuned like a musical instrument that would be the closest you could get...and it still wouldn't be that close.

Just drop a BMW V10 into it, if it can fit into an E30 it will fit in the 86

Tradewind 08-24-2012 10:37 PM

My suggestion too, too hard to add the extra cyls to get the right note

Okay, forget how fast it revs and focus solely on pitch. Not the dynamic note and harmonics of a 10-cylinder engine, but high pitch alone ;)

gwascopter 08-24-2012 11:40 PM

people gotta start using their brain Jesus.

wouldnt mind my car sounding like this lol

wheelhaus 08-24-2012 11:54 PM

yeah, kinda missing a few cylinders.

Engine design has a huge effect on exhaust note, and then the exhaust system itself has another effect. Cylinder angle, such as inline, flat, 15°V, 45°V, 60°V 90°V, cylinder firing order, number of cylinders, equal or unequal length headers, exhaust and intake valve timing, compression, intake tract shape, blah blah blah... This is just the obvious mechanical stuff.

In short, no. the FA20 could never really sound like the LFA. One may be completely built from the ground up to rev high and rev fast, but the note and character would be entirely different.

seriously dude? do you understand that you are missing 6 pistons to even remotely get close to an LFA sound.

Problem is, the LFA makes 2.5x as many "primary pulses". You can filter out lower frequencies but the LFA's "fundamental frequency" (in some sense) is 2.5x higher.

To imitate the sound I think you'd have to have variable length exhaust pipes that let you "phase" the sound to achieve a higher note, but you'd need to vary the length according to engine rpm to get the effect to work at more than just one engine speed.

Nevermind though, I think 4 bangers sound great when they hit ~8600rpm :P

Now THAT is a good answer :) See that people? No sarcastic or nasty comments necessary, and an intelligent answer that even a simpleton like ME can understand was had

And I agree ;) Still, I wouldn't mind finding the path to a tone that barks and howls more than roars and bellows ;)

FnFast 08-25-2012 02:17 PM

can't believe this thread went into 2 pages. haha.

there is no way in hell a 2.0 Liter Boxer engine can ever sound like a V10/V12 High output vehicle. Try getting the V8 to sounds like a 4-banger.

Whats with all the people rejecting a perfectly good question from the OP? It is possible: http://www.formula1.com/news/headlin...1/6/12134.html

Straight from FIA. You can get F1 sound from 4 cylinders... And of course prototypes were made and tested so yes its possible with lots of money involved as well.

The ruling has since been changed to V6 for 2014 but that doesn't mean its not possible. You just need higher revs. They are doing this with 1.6L for those who say it cant be done with 2L :laughabove:

For those wondering why I am even posting about F1 engines. The LFA was designed to sound like F1 engines.

Vracer111 08-25-2012 03:50 PM

I'd much rather have it sound like a BRM V16... 1.5L of supercharged fury from the 50's that would make muscle cars wet their pants in fear from the sound.... both thunderous in the lower band and high pitched wailing in the upper band. The 86 is too refined and not 'bad assed' enough for the sound though...
