2014 Subaru WRX caught hot-weather testing in the States

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog....x-mule-opt.jpg

Few mainstream hot hatches have tugged as many heartstrings in the last decade or so than the Subaru WRX. From its turbocharged four-cylinder heart to the traction of its all-wheel-drive footprint, Rex has been the benchmark by which others are judged since its debut in the States as a 2002 model. Suffice it to say that the next WRX, due in 2014, has mighty big shoes to fill.

Judging by the spy photos you see above, those shoes will be planted under bodywork that's not particularly different from that of the standard Impreza. We'd be lying if we said we weren't hoping for a bit more pizazz from this fourth-gen WRX, but most of its tepid styling – assuming these images are indeed indicative of the 2014 WRX – would be forgiven if the machine boasts more turbocharged performance than ever before.

As you can see, Subaru's engineering team brought along a current third-gen WRX hatchback for testing alongside the new model, and a brief comparison shows how much more restrained the styling of the latest Impreza is when compared to its forebear. We also note what appears to be an intercooler sticking further up into the hood scoop than the third-gen model, which could mean a turbocharged version of Subie's new FA engine is underhood. We'll have to wait and see. In the meantime, peruse the images above and carry on speculating.

I didn't really believe the rumors that the next WRX would be totally different from the Impreza. In fact, I'm glad it's still an Impreza underneath.

I wouldn't put too much stock into the (bland) looks. Judging by the hack job of the rear bumper for the exhaust pipes, I'd say the production 4th generation WRX will wear much more aggressive bumpers and fenders.

Also of note is the 6 speed transmission. Here's hoping that's standard in both the STI and standard trims.

vaporiz 08-25-2012 12:11 AM

It doesn't look much different from the current gen.

I'm still interested by the 4 cylinder and its full specs

actually the back looks so bland

R8 08-25-2012 12:43 AM

Reminds me of the 2012 Civic Si sedan somehow with the side windows. Even looks like the same kinda hard-plastic dash.

dori. 08-25-2012 04:02 AM

not to crazy about the styling. it looks unfinished. dunno how that'd look standing next to the BRZ and Legacy in the 2013 lineup

Neilus 08-25-2012 04:36 AM

Lets face it... its butt ugly....

Tujin 08-25-2012 05:34 AM

2/10 would not bang

ZetaVI 08-25-2012 06:41 AM

I wasn't expecting it to be a looker but at least now we have some news going on w/ the WRX.

The dash in my wife's '12 Impreza is made of the same material as the FR-S/BRZ.

Regarding the looks - it's a mule. Like I said, I expect the production WRX to have big fenders and aggressive bumpers. And you know it will have a spoiler. Right now it looks like an Impreza sedan, and yeah those aren't that great looking! The 5 door Impreza looks better, and I expect the 5 door WRX to look even better than the current WRX.

My exact thought! Civic front end and sides, Ford Focus rear end. Terrible.

LivingLegend 08-25-2012 09:55 AM

I think they're just testing the engine and drive train with the hacked up bumper cut outs. I'm just hoping it looks a lot better than this.

Calum 08-25-2012 12:34 PM

Seriously guys, when was the last time Subaru designed a good looking car? I can't think of a single example. The last gen Impreza looked like a Corolla and a Mazda 3 got pregnant, had a late term abortion and named the corps fetus Impreza. And please don't tell me you think a bug eye is good looking, we all respect it, but beautiful it is not.

I'm very thankful that Toyota designed the body of the twins.

dsgerbc 08-25-2012 12:42 PM

I sure hope that's some drivetrain testing, and not how a WRX/STI will look. Otherwise I'll go and buy the outgoing model despite the weak engine.
Separate platforms for WRX/STI aren't a rumour. They were in Subaru's roadmap.
There was also a new 'sport wagon' for 2014, which I guess could look like a current impreza but with a turbo.

Asterisked Accolade 08-25-2012 01:51 PM

I'm not a fan of the Imprezas bumper. The car looks much cheaper than the last couple styles, IMO. I also noticed that the Toyota Camry and Corolla both look cheaper than the past gen or two-- i wonder if Subaru and Toyota did that because of expectations of money-loss from the GT86/BRZ.

quik1987 08-25-2012 02:01 PM

It could just be a mule...

FantomRider 08-25-2012 02:06 PM

:D the tail lights remind me of http://www.cardata.com/spoilers/imag...a_Echo_26L.jpg

Bacon 08-25-2012 02:17 PM

Definitely a mule. They most likely went the easy route and took what was available to test the components in the real world.

The BRZ wore a Legacy body during early testing.

F3dzo 08-25-2012 02:23 PM

I see exactly what they're trying to do. They are simply moving the demographic for the wrx... With this move it makes room for the next high performance platform for Subaru... I see I Sti brz on the horizon. This styling for the 14 wrx further cements everyones
Speculation about a turbo brz in the future.

zigzagz94 08-25-2012 02:28 PM

It's good that this is just a mule because the current Impreza is one of the ugliest vehicles on the road.

That was years before production start. And now they'll have to start producing those in a couple of months. Too late for the mule.

Couple of months? The 2014 WRX wont start selling until next summer.

Which means they'll have to start producing in Spring'13. The point - way too late for legacy-type mules.

quik1987 08-25-2012 03:39 PM

I thought it was suppose to be a 3 door though

CSSM 08-25-2012 03:42 PM

I still want to see this

Then I would buy

cgrey 08-26-2012 09:07 PM

This is what a WRX looks like:

Everything after looked like every other car out there.

BRZ looked like a 2 door Impreza wagon when testing, so who knows?

Spaceywilly 08-28-2012 10:46 AM

This is just a powertrain mule.

M-17 08-28-2012 03:24 PM

I'm probably one of the very few or only one that actually likes the current impreza. It just took me a little time to get used to its design and now I've accepted it. I wouldn't mind driving one of those at all imo.

Still waiting for more news on the WRX though.

Stu baru 08-28-2012 03:32 PM

Impreza hasn't look good since the GC8

dsgerbc 12-04-2012 03:18 PM

No new-gen WRX for two more years

I will try to find the link, but word was Subaru wants to get Competitive back in WRC, so they will focus on a small , lightweight 2 door Hatchback sim size to a Yaris to Compete w/ the Citroens/ Fords that have dominated lately. Also rumor that STi and WRX could be not even close to same car, WRX to be more Raw like a street legal Rally Car ! Hoping Subaru comes through on this small / light hatch idea !!!

Thank god! I hate to say this, but I lost a ton of respect for WRX's after Subaru pulled out of WRC. Same happened with Mitsubishi; I just can't bring myself to like the Evo X, because it doesn't have the rally history it's predecessors do.

Guess I fall victim to that old marketing adage, "Race on Sunday, sell on Monday."

EDIT: I only saw after posting, MarkRacerX, that you drive an Evo X. Sorry man... I swear I wasn't singling out and picking on your ride! :happy0180:
