Near Future 274 hp turbo BRZ rumors from Motortrend?

This is an excerpt from Motor-Trends best drivers car article:

Last paragraph on page 7.

.............''We'll know for sure in the near future when Subaru releases a turbocharged, 274-hp version of the BRZ. But Subaru doesn't need to make any apologies for this version. It's wonderful''.

I have not heard about this turbo BRZ. Is this confirmed?

bkneal 08-23-2012 12:03 PM

I didn't get the feeling they were saying it in the sense that they knew for sure this model was coming out and would have exactly 274 hp. More of it's pretty much an inevitability, and 274 seems a likely HP goal.

How could motor trend be knowing this before anyone else?.... Especially the Japanese auto scene?

TouchMyHonda 08-23-2012 12:42 PM

I hope its true.

Longhorn248 08-23-2012 01:01 PM

If it's true I'll be on another waitlist.

Draco-REX 08-23-2012 01:01 PM

It was just hyperbole.

By stealing Hyundai's new turbo-4 engine and put it into BRZ?

Seems like a really random number to throw out. I think the old GC chassis STIs had that exact HP.

ichitaka05 08-23-2012 01:22 PM

I think, they got that idea from current Legacy GT (in JP), cuz they're using FA20 & it's turbo. FYI it's not same DI as FRS/BRZ, it's different DI is used.

Might be, but even the JDM turbo'd FA is pushing 296hp/296tq. I think MT is just blowing smoke up our collective behinds. Direct quotes from Subaru have pegged any performance version to be around 250hp while staying NA.

Hanakuso 08-23-2012 01:41 PM

I'll believe it when I see it

KaliKev 08-23-2012 01:42 PM

After all the reviews saying this car needs more power, i'd be very surprised if they don't come out with a higher powered version in 2-3 years or less...

Sorry but this is all just a Pipe Dreamhttp://cdn.motinetwork.net/motifake....1271807779.jpg

At least rumors are making their way back to the forum.

Might be time for some of the original FT86 detectives to do some under cover work. :bonk:

Sasquachulator 08-23-2012 04:17 PM

isnt 274 the output for the current WRX? (STI is 300?)

And as mentioned before, the new FA20 DIT motor makes 296/296 (it loses D4S for just Direct injection tech). So far that one's only in the japanese Legacy.

Turbo the BRZ, Higher the power is not difficult, it is keeping everything in perfect balance makes it difficult. Why the other higher power cars rank lower in the review? I am anxious to see a STI a couple years later in this review again.

Coupe ain't gonna come for another 3~4yrs. Well, that's my guess anyways. I'm guessing they gonna use "22B" 20th Anniversary edi (on 2018) and on 2020, they'll make 22nd Anniversary edi 22B STI

Zadkiel 08-23-2012 11:02 PM

Even if it were true, I don't care. It has enough power for me to need to become a better driver.

Here's the deciding factor. After a spirited backroad blast, when you make it home, how big is the smile on your face?

pinoyplaya 08-23-2012 11:04 PM

They should have made the car 286HP/TQ

2 for Toyota + Subaru
86 for duh... 86

Yeah, that's the exact HP number of the Hyundai/Kia turbo engine. They had to of pulled it from that.
