Condensed Information

Just wondering if someone could help answer shortly what the current status of whats known? Its hard for me to tell reading back on the forums based upon information being released over time.

Projected Release date/season? -

Will the fr/ft models be the same just badged different? -

Will LED lighting be used in some way like the concepts (HL's and TLs)? -

The chance of it using projector headlights (and/or HID's)? -

O/T but what are the chances of a special release version at initial launch? (Never followed scion launches before, so I am unaware how often this occurs)

Thanks a bunch!

Laika 07-21-2011 05:38 PM

You're at a book club asking for the spark notes. Good luck.

Anticipating a Spring/Fall 2012 launch

Models are uniform across the globe, but im sure bits and pieces of parts will be exclusive to certain regions upon launch.

Lighting for the production car is unknown.

No special version at launch known or expected.

Heimer 07-21-2011 05:58 PM

Thanks broseph

Mari0 07-21-2011 06:11 PM

For the Headlights, they will most likely have projectors (since the new tC does too, right?) and possibly HIDs, but I wouldn't bet on it.

As far as the parts, They have to have at least slightly different trunks or back bumper (depending on where the license plate is placed) and possibly different taillights, unless the USA version has orange blinkers too, which is not very scion-like. And finally, they were saying that US restrictions on the exhaust are not as bad, so Scion might have a louder exhaust or at least tune it differently.

The Release Series (RS) should either come out at the same time or at least be announced and come within the next month or two.

But those are all rumors/speculations. Nothing will be set in stone until December. And even then, I would assume we will have plenty of questions that will be unanswered.

Where did this rumor come from? Did you just make that up? :slap:

bofa 07-21-2011 06:39 PM

Yeah, iirc the tC RS 1.0 came about 10-12 months after release. I wouldn't expect a RS until Spring/Summer 2013 at the earliest.

I remember reading it somewhere. Can't find the article though... If I do I'll edit this post

EDIT: Didn't find the article, but I found this on the wiki: "Toyota debuted the production tC at the January 2004 with sales beginning in June 2004 as a 2005 model year" and this "Beginning in late spring 2004, Scion launched the Release Series (RS) line". I guess June could be considered late spring, so I guess it lunched at the same time? That is, if any of this information is correct. I honestly can't think back to 2004, but I don't think that is completely correct.

EDIT: Yeap, found conflicting information. According to ScionLife, "The Release Series line of the Scion tC was a limited-release option package that began with the Scion tC RS1 in April 2005". Anyways, still looking for the original article I was referring to.

Projected Release date/season? - The Dec '11 Tokyo Auto Show is probably the earliest we'll see what the official release looks like and then Spring of '12 on the showroom floors.

Will the fr/ft models be the same just badged different? - Based on Moto's post, it'll look a lot different than the mule we've been seeing.

Will LED lighting be used in some way like the concepts (HL's and TLs)? - Hell to the NO! ;) :bellyroll:

The chance of it using projector headlights (and/or HID's)? -
For cost reasons, I would assume standard projector halogen beams w/HID being an option

O/T but what are the chances of a special release version at initial launch? (Never followed scion launches before, so I am unaware how often this occurs) Doubt it. Maybe a 30th anniversary edition in 2013-2017 but who knows

RR I think we will see LEDs in the head and tail lights tbh. Just my opinion - nothing confirmed.

"AUDI style" LED strips maybe, but not actual LED headlamps, for sure. As far as the tails, even if they don't have them as stock, they might offer different LED tails like they did with the tC, or you can go aftermarket/DIY.

Works for me, except the aftermarke LEDs generally look pretty trashy.

Maybe a LED city light in the headlight housing but I doubt an LED strip.

That was the one thing that didn't look right on the Geneva MKII (my opinion). I'm going to assume that since the test mule didn't have the LED strip but did have the LED 3rd and round LED brake lights, they might go with something similar on the official vehicle.

Mari0 07-21-2011 08:28 PM

I hope the LED idea is the only thing they keep from the tails from the mule... :barf:

After reading what moto has said though, I'm pretty sure they will be closer to the concepts' tails rather than the ones on the mule, which actually remind me of subaru's tails.

Heimer 07-21-2011 09:57 PM

Glad to hear that it most likely will look a little different from the latest mule. I don't care to much for the bland deviation from the ft and the fr (Yeah i realize they use padding to disguise and all).

I'm a little dissapointed if they don't have a special release version, simply from the fact that this will be the first car I'll buy new, my CTS is used and all i did was rims and HID's. I'm not a tooler by any means so I probably will end up paying an arm and a leg for the body kit and add-ons at the dealer. Was hoping for something unique right out the gates.

Is grey or black body color with bright orange rims too gaudy? I'm thinking in terms of how the gt3rs has the grey and red styling. But I realize im talking about tricking out a scion, and I'm 21, is that too old to be caught with something like that?

Yes.

J/K. It's your money and your car. All I'd say is that doing something like that has its downsides. You attract more cops, more people try to race you, and if you're inclined to be easily goaded by revving at redlights, it may not be a good idea. Also, consider that since this will be your first new car, you would probably hold onto it longer than most others. That would mean that your taste in the "accessorizing" may change as you age. If that's the case, it would be wise not to change the car irreversibly.

Otherwise, have fun and please be safe.

bofa 07-21-2011 10:24 PM

Really the release series is not much more than a $3000 appearance package so I wouldn't be too bummed. If anything you can sit tight until it comes out.

I personally think orange rims would be hideous, but to each his own. There are certain things that may be ugly, but if done right could look pretty badass. The orange rims alone probably wouldn't cut it.

As far as the age thing, I'm almost 30 and will probably be going from a 350Z to this car. I don't put too much weight into the Scion thing. I'll give the scion and subie both a fair shake (along with the other cars I'm looking at) before I make my decision, but I'm not too worried about others thinking the car is too young. If it offers what I want for what I'm willing to pay, so be it.

Heimer 07-21-2011 11:36 PM

I've never been a racer, never owned a fast car, but I don't want to be some random guy dying in a street race. So if someone revved at a stop light id look like a b*tch. I just see exotic cars pull off the colored rims, wondered how it'd look on the fr. But I do see what you mean by keeping it longer and tastes changing.

Its weird because I want the looks of a race car without having to race it. I want an aero kit, because I find cars lacking without them (I.e. Camaro, mustang, etc). Im hoping they offer one at production. Ive always wanted a turbo simply for the spooling and the blow off noise, yeah im weird. Most of all im at a point in my life where I want a warranty that will last me long enough to save for a house, so ill buy an extended.

I was set on the veloster until I saw the FR. Friends ragged on me because id be going from a CTS to a Hyundai. Showed them the fr/ft concept and they agreed much better.

Learn stick now... find a friend (maybe one you dont like) or a rental with a stick and learn. A used car salesman taught me the basics in about 15 minutes in a Kia he was trying to sell me. :bellyroll: Where are you in FL? Hell I'll teach ya if you find a car.

Racing is good. Just keep it off the street.

I would give you a hard time, but the others seem to be doing a good job of it so I will answer some of your questions.

1) yes they will offer lip kits either from the start or very soon, as they do that for all scion models (spoilers too I guess :barf: ). I would recommend you wait for the 5axis lip kit (they always make one) and other aftermarket ones to come out, but that's up to you.

2) learn to drive a stick now. Trust me, you wouldn't want to be learning on your first new car...

3) Sorry to break it to you, but the paddle shifters will be a gimic to sell it exactly to those people the others grouped you up with above. It won't be be an automanual, but an automatic with shifting capabilities. Sure it might fool someone into thinking it looks race-like, but that's all it would do. Not to mention that according to rumors it will be slower as well. Sorry, I said I won't do it, but I felt like you should know :iono:

4) You don't have to go to a full blown track to race. There are alternatives, like autocross and such that are easier on your pocket.

Heimer 07-22-2011 12:25 PM

I live in Palm Harbor, work in Clearwater and I go to USF St Pete.

My friends have offered before to teach me but I never had a reason to learn until the FR. My only concern with driving a manual is not being able to call, text, shift, clutch at the same time. Not that that's safe but we all do it lol. Though, I do think I would hate myself if I bought a sports car in automatic. I guess then the FR would be a grand cheaper in manual. Ill probably try in my friends civic.

Yeah I figured it probably wouldn't have some gtr transmission in it. Ill just learn Sunday maybe and save me the emberassment. Im not one for spoilers, I actually like what bye and infinity do with the trunks now.
I just can't wait long to get the car once it is out, my CTS is costing me 2k+ a year to keep running and I think the transmission is next.

bofa 07-22-2011 12:36 PM

I'm up in Jacksonville so that's a bit of a haul. I would definitely find a way to learn now though.

As for call, text, eating, etc while driving... well, don't. I'm one of those people that when I'm driving, all else is secondary. That's my best recommendation. There are no calls, texts, or burgers that are so important that your risk yourself, your car, or others around you. /endsoapbox. That said, most of the shifting around town is while you are accelerating and stopping. For the most part, once you are in 4th/5th around town, you aren't doing much shift work.

As for the 6MT being cheaper, that's not necessarily a given. I've seen a few cars lately where the manual can be slightly more expensive. I'm not saying that will be the case here, but nothing's given until they release the price. Usually though, the price is negligible for most. And once you drive a stick its hard to imagine purchasing an auto again. I'll have a hard time going to a DSG setup... I'll have to tell myself its just more efficient.

Reading your comments, it seems like the fr-s is not really the car for you, but it's your money, I guess. Being able to drive a stick is a must have skill set if you ask me. It also helps people better understand their cars, how they act, and ultimately improve their driving capabilities and awareness. But I'm not gonna sit here and preach to you about why manuals are important, I am sure there are plenty of articles for that.

You are kidding me, right? Whats up with that bs analogy "everybody does it". I am your age (21 right?) and I never text and drive, even if I am in my mom's automatic. It's just as stupid as drinking and driving. If someone needs me, they can call me (using hands free when driving). Trust me, once you learn, you will be able to text, drive and shift... But that's just stupid. I was giving you the benefit of the doubt before, but now you do seem more and more like your typical river wanna be. At one point I was even thinking that you were trolling....

Knowing scion, their manuals are always cheaper (as a matter of fact, idk any car that has a cheaper automatic version, but there probably are a few). Usually it's by 1-2k, which to me is not too negligible on a 20k car. Also, this auto has ever more parts to it (paddle shifters and all the things u need for those), which will most likely increase the cost even further. So I see .00001% chance of it being cheaper, but maybe that's just me.

Don't get me wrong, toyota's automatics are great for what you pay for and if you NEED to drive it, but I'll pick stick over it any day....

Good luck finding a rental that's stick. I tried once to find a rental that was stick so I could teach my wife to drive stick, and I couldn't find one.

Yeah I don't think, rental place have MT anymore.

Heimer 07-22-2011 01:44 PM

I'm not trolling, I only said "everyone" for effect. 90% of the people I know text/call and drive. I don't mean 16 year old emotionally compromised girls either. I don't do it while I'm heading for a stoplight or with people in front of me, but most certainly if lanes are clear I can text without even looking at my phone. Anyways, I'm not arguing with you, I agree it is unsafe.

As for if this is really my car, I really thought it was once I saw the FR-S concept I was sold, but I'm more of a looks over whats inside kind of person. I've always wanted a car to mod, and my CTS is practically unmodifiable and unreliable. If the production looks like a really watered down version of either concept I will probably look elsewere, but I hope I don't have to.

I've never been to the track to race, doesn't mean I won't like to, I've just never had a car to do it with. I've always been jealous of the instant power manuals seem to recieve over both of my last automatics have that nice delay upon pushing the gas to recieving the power.

I was thinking of Infiniti when I wrote this. Not sure how many others do that. I also believe they learned to package in more options now to muddy the comparison.

Agree though - for Scion and Subaru the going rate seems to be 1k for 5AT, or about $20/month. Doesn't seem to hard on the wallet if you can't manage a little hand-foot coordination.
