Lemon FRS in Tampa FL???
I might end up with the first "Lemon" FRS. Here's the back story:
I went to Tampa Bay Toyota/Scion and bought my new Asphalt FRS on 6/29/12. It was on their showroom floor for nearly 2 weeks due to markups for a 5AD body kit that was "required" to purchase the car ($3k). After many people refused to jump on this FRS for either appearance or price or combination of bad sales experience reasons, I went back and made the deal. The body kit isn't fitting flush all around the skirts and front end so I have taken it in 2 times so far (lemon after 3 typically). I am being VERY critical and somewhat difficult on purpose to a degree due to the nature of the way it was sold. I understand many will say "you didn't have to buy that car" but in reality they aren't super easy to come by in 6MT, color choice and options I wanted. If you buy a new car it should meet or exceed expectations or you should take it back to your dealer for options to rectify. The dealership has offered to buy the car back if I'm not satisfied with the latest repairs to the body kit, however, I don't want to sell MY CAR! Aside from the body kit, she is an AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL CAR. If they can't get the body kit right, I think they should order another one and see if it was a bad kit or possibly just try to refund the amount of the body kit and end this mess. Overall, I wanted to share my situation to educate on the potential for the 5AD body kit not fitting right for prospective buyers and also to spread the word that Toyota of Tampa Bay is NOT a place I would recommend to anyone. What is everyone else's thoughts? |
a lemon fr-s right on!!
Show us some pictures of the issue areas. Let others with the same kit compare theirs to yours (or yours to theirs)?
:iono: |
It's at the dealership right now so it may or may not be corrected for pics. I wish I would've taken them prior!
Is that the one on Fletcher? It so I second your opinion. Those guys gave me some insane price quotes when I was shopping.
In a nutshell, OP bought Rice and it wasn't installed properly. And now he's making a big deal about it.
Yes the one on Fletcher. OP didn't buy rice, was required to buy it. I even asked if I could take them uninstalled and try to sell it online.
Lemon law applies to dealer installed accessories?? I always thought it was more for mechanical failures and breakdowns, they're going to lose a lot more buying it back vs putting the stock parts back on and refunding the difference
Yes if it is installed by the dealer at the sale of the car and can cause decrease in value then it falls under lemon. I agree that they should do that but we wil see.
I'm not wrong for taking this stance am I? |
Pretty reliable source said that dealers were installing some of the five axis parts incorrectly, causing fitment issues.
Skirt squirts
Most ALL dealers dont know how to install skirts - I only found ONE in Kanada - cause the dealership owner had the grunts do it right on his FRS .
I went there to redo mine - http://i628.photobucket.com/albums/u...4396Af21_w.jpg (site wont let me load my avatar) |
Oh wow -

The dealer I got mine at has a 5AD with a billion (might as well be) dollar mark-up sitting on the lot right now and it looks like shit. The lip looks like it's uneven and the whole thing looks like it'll blow off if it went over 55MPH.
I'm mostly amazed that the dealership is willing to risk a lifelong valued customer over a few bucks on a markup on a newly hyped car. If the customer didn't want the body kit don't sell it to him! I just wish they'd do the right thing.
I thought I was going to see a lemon yellow frs! Maybe with a pearl style shimmer. That would be sweet!
Yep!

Thats good that they offered to buy the car back. Btw they changed the lemon law this year (dont know if its in effect) making it some stupid number like 10 times you have to come in for the same problem.
I had my 350Z lemon law'd back in 2003. From what I remember you have to have a problem that the dealer couldn't fix after 3 tries and this problem has to be something that could cause harm to you if not fixed. I had the manual transmission replaced 3 times (never got a good one) and a whole other host of other problems and that was fairly easy for the consumer lawyer to get me my money back.
I some how doubt this aesthetic problem will get you your money back but good luck. You probably should contact a consumer lawyer and see what they think. |
Damn, sucks to hear I'm not the only one with multiple botched installs.
Hey OP, you should have sued Toyota.

I just spoke to Young on the phone with Five Axis. I work in the customer service field of financial services and Young was AMAZING. 5AD stands by their products and work and I am more than confident that the dealership botched the install and 5AD will help them make it right. I am going to take pics tomorrow if/when I get my FRS back.
Five:AD has the best customer service on the planet IME. These guys really care about their product. Just watch out for the dealership and whatever you do only let the original dealer that did the install do work on your installation issues with the kit. My situation with the install on the kit is very sensitive right now due to multiple dealerships getting involved but Five:AD has helped make sure this gets resolved. Good luck dude. When the kit is on right you have to admit it is a very sick looking kit.
Digital_assassin - your thread is what made me call them. I wish I had more pics of this whole process. The really tough part was that I didn't initially want the kit but really wanted the car so I "settled" for it with the car. Now I love it, I just wish it was installed by someone with better knowledge or at 5AD. The dealership has it now (over a week total) and we will see if they can get this ironed out. If not, I'm going to see if they will negotiate on some of it's price and let me go to another facility to repair the install.
Mine was almost EXACTLY where your photos in your thread were. Skirts and spoiler were the worst and the edges of the front and rear not attached properly. I dealt with Young who is from right outside of Tampa here so he was awesome and very helpful.

No, the 5AD kit
Just stick out the install with the dealer where you purchased it, trust me. Learned a lesson with mine. If you take it anywhere other than the installing dealer they will likely wash their hands of any issues. If you do for some reason go somewhere else make sure you will have a warranty with them. Also make sure whoever does the install uses the adhesives in the Five:AD kit only. Anything else can damage the kit, your car, and kill the warranty with Five:AD. Your best bet for bulletproof warranty is stick with the original installing dealer and ultimately Five:AD will work with them to help them get it right if problems persist.
I am almost positive that this would not fall under lemon law. Lemon law requires the car to either be dangerous or inoperable for extended periods of times.
This would fall under a regular issue. |

Sorry to hear about your FR-S.
How did Toyota handle yours? |

So the kit morphed, warped, or moved somehow after you bought it? I'm betting it was like that the day you bought it but you were enthralled to be getting the car and didn't notice. It's not a lemon. Lemon laws vary but most specify a safety, the loss of use, or some flaw that devalues the manufactured product. Aftermarket body kits do not fall under any of these. Good luck to ya but you seem like you're sour about paying for something you really didn't want and are trying to get paid. |
No, with heat the 3M tape isn't sticking. It was fine for the first week or so (I'm in FL). I'm not looking to get paid, I just want it right. At first I didn't really want the kit but now it's something that's a part of the car and I'm happy. I'm only "sour" that the dealership took an initial stance of making a fast buck and now aren't doing the right thing. After speaking to five axis it was made pretty clear that the kit matches the lines on this car exactly and any body shop or installer that doesn't install it perfectly will see issues (hence why I wanted to wait upfront).
@FirestormFRS - I agree lemon law may not apply here but from my own experience with the dealer installs of this kit on my car I believe @ICEBONEZ issue is genuine. I have one of the first consumer kits in the country and because of this I get the joy of being a guinea pig for the dealers. The kit is beautiful but if not installed correctly it will have issues. I know that my car and a couple others, like icebonez have made it apparent to 5:AD that they need to really get into the fine details with their instructions for the dealers and have since rewrote the instructions as well as created a video to assist the dealers in getting it right. Alot of the process is obvious but things like dealers thinking the adhesion promoter isn't required because it's a new car or taking it upon themselves to use products other than what 5:AD supplies is where the problems will eventually, or in our cases immediately, present themselves. I have chosen to keep the details of my issues to myself because of how 5:AD is handling the situation other than a few photos of when the first issues appeared which can be found in my members journal. Please don't attack a poster on here because they are stating they have a problem when you don't have all the facts.
That wasn't an attack. That was an opinion. This is an intenet forum for sharing opinions, thoughts, and ideas. Creating a thread "lemon FRS in Tampa" is very much asking for peoples opinion.
Sorry you guys are having problems with poorly dealer installed aftermarket parts. Not a Toyota/Subaru issue though. |
Pics of bad kit alignment?
Another stealership poorly installing an aftermarket kit on a vehicle. I don't know how some dealerships stay in business with their lackadaisical selves.
