Does clear tinting a windshield cut heat?

A clear tint is legal here in Florida. The shop tells me it will get me a 50% heat reduction and will not affect vision either day or night. That would be a big help in this climate. Has anyone tried it?

Depends on how much UVA and UVB it actually blocks.

ZDan 04-12-2023 06:43 PM

You'll want to get a tint that blocks IR more so than UV to keep heat out...

Right now all I have to go on is the word of the word of the tint guy.

Get specs for the tint, and make sure IR rejection is high.
Looks like Llumar AIR 80 BL SR HPR (whew) would be the one you want for max heat rejection, or AIR 90 CL SR HPR for max light transmission with significant heat rejection.

3M Crystalline 90. 59% IRER, ~99% VLT (*)

(*) 3M quotes performance data of their films as installed on 73% tinted glass. Back-calculating the VLT of Crystalline 90, it only reduces VLT on the order of 1%.

I don't know whether the Llumar AIR 90 VLT numbers are of the film itself, or include glass. If just the film itself, accounting for glass might reduce VLT below what's legal, but it's probably close enough to not get into trouble.

Looks like Llumar's numbers are for film on 6mm clear glass. Seems like the 3M might be a better choice for light transmission vs. heat rejection...

Yes have done it on all my cars. Once you do it you will be addicted.

Qwimby1 04-13-2023 08:06 PM

Very good info. Thanks to all!

Don’t get the cheep shit tho. It is worth the extra. Think my BRZ was about $700 for all the windows.

How good is it really? Like on a clear hot summer day how long can it be parked before it's roasting in there?

Pat 04-14-2023 12:03 AM

With the proper film you can eliminate most of the solar gain. It can make a big difference.

It is always going to get hot in a car. The part I noticed was once you start it the car cools down in about 1/2 the time. Usually I was a mile or so down the toll road from work when it started to feel cool. After the car felt cool before I got on the toll road less than a mile from work.

I've done 3m Crystalline 70 all around in the past and had zero issues driving the car under any condition.

I think it's definately worth it.

I got ceramic tints on the passenger and driver side windows and I've found long road trips with the sun on my arm not heating up. But the parts of my body exposed to my untinted windshield getting noticeably warmer.

I had regular tints before on passenger and driver windows, and those helped by ~75% of what these ceramic tints do.

I plan on doing ceramic tints on every windshield for every car I own from now on.

the windows on mine had a fairly dark tent when I bought it and that works fine. The two tint shops I talked to here both use ceramic for windshields and both quoted about the same stats. $200 to start and $250 for the best product.

For those that have clear tinted windshields, do you get refraction (rainbow images) when wearing polarized sunglasses?
