ROUGH RIDING 2016 FRS

I'm trying to smooth out my ride
All stock suspension, Firestone firehawks and 27,000 miles on the car
Apparently Toyota altered the 2017 86 suspension and I would like to put that
suspension on my car. How can I find out if those parts will Fit? Anybody done this? I'm not interested in lowering the car.
Thanks

while there were alterations to the suspension over time, i don't believe any of the models ever had a softer riding suspension from previous models.

it's always been a performance car that prioritizes performance above passenger comfort.

Get some 500tw tires, 205/60/r16 on 16" wheels. Soft as it's going to get.

Clipdat 03-15-2023 11:49 PM

What size tires are on the car currently?

NoHaveMSG 03-16-2023 12:41 AM

Me: *laughs in 10/12K spring rates*

In all seriousness. You can check out this thread but you are already about as good as you are going to get spring/damper wise. How many miles on your car? If you are high mile maybe another low miles, or new set, of stock dampers may be worth it. Also what tire? All seasons will generally be softer than summer tires. Going to 16" wheels with a tire with more sidewall also will help.

I suggest you reduce the tire pressure down to about 28 psi and see if that helps.

Or, as suggested above, get some "softer" tires (like most all season tires).

Sell car and buy a 70’s Lincoln Continental.

Put Ohlins on.

accokeek88 03-16-2023 04:41 PM

Funny you should mention that.
I drove a 1970 Lincoln that belonged to my friends dad.
It was a big beautiful long black car and I could barely see front fenders..
Anyway, the car has 27,000 miles and the tires are 215/45/17's
Looks like I'm leaning towards a smaller wheel
Seems like some of you agree with that to soften the ride
Thanks for your replies

Clipdat 03-16-2023 04:43 PM

The roads got trashed due to the recent rain, you could be feeling the results of that.

Clipdat 03-16-2023 04:52 PM

Maybe you need this guy's setup:

I loved to drive my Grandmas Lincoln. But this was in the 80’s. Her’s was exactly like this one. Yes the front of the car arrived a week before you did. Wish I had it now.

Tires get significantly harder as they age. Check the date codes on your Firestones - they may have been sitting on the shelf for a while before they were installed on your vehicle.

Clipdat 03-16-2023 05:32 PM

Good call, forgot to ask about the age of the rubber.

bucketfoot 03-16-2023 07:53 PM

I'm just waiting for it to get closer to when I will remove my winter tires. Then I plan on getting a set of 16" wheels with 225/50/16 Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 Plus tires to try out for daily use.

accokeek88 03-16-2023 10:31 PM

I'll check the date codes but it's a little late now
They've been on there for a long while now.
The black 86/ FRS? pictured previously looks like one I read about on this forum somewhere. It was about the guy installing an actual lift kit for the car and commenting that as much as he hated to admit it, it felt like a camry..
On another subject, is there some magical place you can find used 16 inch wheels?
I read "got this great deal " here and there but every time I look, theres always a catch one way or another..

Dadhawk 03-17-2023 08:38 AM

I'll add, I just changed out my tires for Firehawks (previously had the Primacies and the Bridgestone Etopias). The Firehawks by themselves was a noticeable improvement not just in ride but road noise.

Keep seeing this thread title and thinking about this song:

accokeek88 03-17-2023 10:16 PM

So I'll add that when I had it aligned, the top tech in the shop drove it and said it rode"like a stone". That kind of made me think I'm not imagining it..
Looking for 16 inch wheels now.

Clipdat 03-18-2023 02:26 AM

Something seems off here, like the tires are dry rotted and rock hard or the OEM dampers are blown.

what kind of price were you looking for?

i've got set of bronze sparcos with old winter tires on them that aren't doing me any good.

shipping would probably kill the deal for you though..

PM'd you

accokeek88 10-16-2023 09:37 PM

Now seven months on

I finally did it and put 8X16 wheels from VTO and 225/50r16 Continentals on.
The ride is way better now. There's a bump I used to hit that felt like a brick and now its barely noticeable. I can't believe the transformation.
I was thinking about putting B6 shocks on but for regular street driving a lot of the comments I've read feel the improvement would be negligible. Still, down the road I'll probably end up doing that.
What I'm hoping to do next is the MCA Traction Mod. The rear end chatters on acceleration up hills and around turns and this is supposed to take care of that.
Finding that product might be interesting since it seems to be out of stock or in the process of a redesign. If I ever get it I'll be letting you know how it feels although from what I've read it gets nothing but rave reviews.

My car rode way better on heavy 18” wheels with Conti DWS than light 17s and 200tw summers. Tires have a huge impact on ride quality.

Qwimby1 10-17-2023 12:25 PM

I'm running Firestone's on 17-inch Sonic wheels. The wheels are 21 pounds. When I first put the set up on,k it worked very well but gradually the car started driving like a gravel truck. Rough ride and lots of rattles. Then the steering rack went out and I replaced it, and now the car drives beautifully with few rattles. Go figure.
