FT-86 Production Name
There's a lot of controversy where the FT86 will fit into Toyotas lineup, in terms of name. There are a few options flying around:
Celica Corolla (Levin or Trueno included) Sprinter Do you think it'll go under one of those historic names or will it have a completely new model name all together? Or maybe will it come under another already known model? Leave your comments! |
Toyota gonna name after me.:bellyroll:
anyways, they might keep it ask FT-86 or maybe take of the 86 and make it FT. |
Personally, I think it'll come under the Celica namesake.
For those young out there, there was a time when the Celica was a very sporty car. Even the Supra actually stemmed from the Celica (I actually had an MA61 Celica Supra!) back in the days when RWD was still the most commonly produced platform (pre-1984). Only after then the Celica was retarded by the FF platform; still living out its days as Toyotas budget level sports car, despite having the most suitable platform for it. Yeah the name was damaged, but I can't see why it couldn't be revived. Anyone who cares will know it's RWD anyway and not a nerfed FWD. Could be a good excuse for old Celica pics to be in the promo gear too. :) Might be why the project was codenamed 086A too, A being the designation for the Celica platform (RAxx, MAxx, GAxx, JZAxx, etc) with the engine code being infront of that. For those who don't know: The AE86 was marketed in Japan as a Corolla Levin and Corolla Trueno, USA as a Corolla GTV and SR5 (right?) and in Australia as the Toyota Sprinter (hence why it is the third option). |

My vote is for FT-86. its already catchy
|
They can't call it the "FT" anything as "FT" stands for "Future Toyota"...
"Celica" will garner more love than any other name, and it's totally appropriate for this car. Hell, going by it's power:weight and looks, you might think of this as the last gen Celica done properly :D |
Levin or Trueno would be awesome, but I think they're going for something new, which would also be a good move.
They're not gonna name it Celica. I'm sure of that. |

What's yer paypal? I'll bet ya 5 bucks it's the 8th gen Celica :bellyroll: |
if they wont leave it as is the trueno GT/GTS/GTS TRD will work

Both myself and another poster (OldSchoolToys, I believe) explained that this would not be a good move because Toyota is trying start fresh, and the Celica nameplate is a tired one that really has no appeal to the general public. If Toyota hypes up a "new Celica" to the public when the marketing machine begins, people are going to yawn... because while they didn't "care" for the Celica, the collective consciousness remembers it as a car that Toyota has had for a long time. Hell, most people might not even know it was discontinued a year back. Now, take the exact same commercials and replace "all new Celica" with "the (insert new nameplate), and it will be more likely to strike a chord with the public. Oh, and I'll take that bet. Loser buys the winner a beer at the first big FT86 meet. |

It Tetsuya Tada. Tada is last name.:) |
I voted other.
Celica I don't think so.. the concept is based on the AE86. And to me the trueno or sprinter name don't really fit when I take a look at the car :) |
I voted for a new name. While I don't think that naming it "Celica" will necessarily hurt sales, I don't think it'll actually help sales either. In that case, I'd rather see a completely new nameplate on the car, something to signal the fresh approach and design of this car, unlike anything Toyota has made in a long while. Look at how much buzz a new name (like the Genesis Coupe) can generate.
OR Just leave it FT-86 which by the time production car is out, will already be widely well known. |
FT-86 actually sounds decent. but it's sounds like a scion to me. TC. FT. XB. XD. XA....AE? Same type of 2 letters. But Then you have the FJ. So... I dunno.
some ideas...not really original Sprinter Trueno. AE. Super Sprinter. Corolla Sprinter. Corolla GTS. Corolla FT 86. Slider or Slide. Slyde? |
Wow, You just make me think.. I just hope it'll not sold under Scion's name.. Because we don't have them here in Canada
|
Name makes no difference to me. I will buy it regardless. Mine won't have any badging on it either so naming isn't important.
|
Looks like we're not the only ones obsessed with this question :)
http://www.autoblog.com/2009/10/26/t...rates-over-pr/ The people who think this car should be badged a Scion are nuts. The Subaru version of this car would sell like crap if the Toyota version was badged a Scion. |
I think Toyota it will call it something we have yet to think of. But I would like a reference to the principles of the car.
|
they should call it the TS-86 if not FT.. i wouldn't mind calling it the TS (toyota subaru)

if it will be called corolla or celica i wont buy it just for that... associates too much with the bland current products
|
also no go if its a scion
|
Scion already has their own concept called the Fuse and Scion is only sold in the US and maybe Canada next year, so what about the rest of the world? another Toyota name?
Celica I could live with, but I like the FT86 name. |
I obviously voted for Celica for all the reasons I said in the drifting thread but I'll buy it regardless of name.
|
personally i didnt think that this car will be called corolla, trueno, levin, sprinter or even chassis code FT86 i dont know but i have a feeling they will call it different ether way it the specs are right and the price is right ill get one.
|
I'm sure it will be named Celica
I really don't want it to be named that, but chances are it will Just as the Wii had the code name Revolution which would have sound way better they gave it a good marketing name, the Wii. If the name FT86 is the code name for the Revolution than Celica would be the logical choice in a good marketing name as the term Wii is. Celica 2010 Rumors http://www.rpmgo.com/images/new_toyo...ica_subaru.jpg http://www.autospies.com/images/user...and%20rear.JPG AE86 Rumor http://images.paultan.org/images/Toyota_New_AE86_1.jpg http://images.paultan.org/images/Toyota_New_AE86_2.jpg http://images.paultan.org/images/Toyota_New_AE86_3.jpg The rumor images all have similar traits to a Celica and a Supra and ruling out the Supra leaves the Celica name when looking around the internet two names show up for the FT86 Celica and Supra I really wanted the FT-HS and was hoping it could replace the Supra, but from what I know that concept is just a dream. The FT86 is offspring the FT-HS design with all of its potential. if it is going to be named Celica I am going to remove all the decal and place Trueno on it or everyone true to the name FT86 should rebadged the car with a FT86 Emblem giving us a true FT86 club |

There's a very small chance they'd release it as a Scion, but my money is still on Celica.
|
Shaving and debadging go go!! :fighting0040:
|
I swear I'd be sooooooo mad if it was called Celica. I want Sprinter or FT86
|
To everyone EXCEPT for the enthusiasts, Celica = Budget Toyota comparable to a Civic.
I think it'll be something new. I actually have come to like FT86, but I can't really see that sticking. Sprinter would be ok, but the big Dodge van does come in to mind. I dunno, but I don't think it'll be Celica and certainly not Corolla. Something new. |

I voted other! Celica was mostly remembered as FWD so i think they should introduce it as Supra
|
This car is in no way the next Supra. That'd be a mistake too.
Sprinter is what I'm leaning towards now. Light, quick, has some heritage. |

The sprinter line of trim models for the corolla dates back to 1968. There's a lot of heritage behind that name. |
