Few questions from a new owner

After a few days with my new to me GT86 I have some questions ha

The overall ride quality seems good no real issues but if the road is a bit rough or I am dealing with speed bumps the front end seems very "crashy" Is this normal ? I get the feeling I have a blown shock up front.

Another odd thing it does and maybe this is related to the bad shock is under light braking say slowing down for a light or stop sign the front end seems to sort of oscillate. Like it has this sort of back and forth rock to it.

The previous owner did put on new pads and disk up front but they were as cheap as you can get and unfortunately unlike in the states were you can get good cheap blanks these were just cheap. I will be replacing them with OEM or better soon so that might fix this issue as I might just have a slightly warped rotor

Last thing I did notice was the speedo is reading low by 5kph/3mph. Tire size is stock and the car itself is stock. Is this normal ? if not any fix beyond just drive faster :burnrubber:

TLDR Bought a 2014 gt86 that might have a blown shock and warped rotors

Do you know if they changed out the struts? Some aftermarket suspension parts are very uncomfortable.
The probability of having warped rotors is very very remote even if cheap. OEM is the way to go.

The car is stock for sure but it was crashed and repaired and from the looks of it on the Cheapside haha. So if you told me the struts had 100k on them I wouldn't be shocked.

I was at Toyota today ordering pads and rotors. The car will be seeing track time so I want to make sure the rotors are of good quality. OEM pads will be for the street driving

Oh that adds a whole new dimension of possible issues.
I hate just throwing parts at something to try to correct a problem but the obvious answer is, as you plan, to replace the brakes and see if that helps. If not then onto the struts and hopefully that is it. If not then you are in for an adventure.

Yeah I was planning on doing brakes anyway so no issues there. Same with suspension.

Well hopefully that fixes it!

sounds like it's most likely greasy pads.

https://alconkits.com/technical-info...ed-brake-discs

it's fine to change rotors and pads, though a thorough cleaning to the rotors and a good set of quality pads would likely bring braking performance back as well.

autoracer86 09-27-2022 04:33 AM

Thanks for that. This does make we wonder do the oem pads need to be bedded in ?

i really never did. supposed to? it's probably not a bad idea...

On your speedometer being off check your tire pressure. It may help all around to level it to spec.

How do you know that your speedometer is reading low? That might be reading high.

GPS speed reading from my aim solo. Which also happened to match one of those slow down signs that show your speed.

I had a feeling it might be off because when driving home I couldn’t keep up with my friend and we both sent our Cruise control at the same speed. So I checked and I was right

Obligatory "Of course you couldn't keep up with your friend, these cars are soooooo slow!". ;)

It sounds like your speedometer is reading high, not low? Meaning it says 60kph and but you are really going 55kph? If that's the case, don't worry about it. It legally (I would guess everywhere has the same rule) needs to be calibrated to read at least the speed you are going and no slower. In the US I think it can legally read up to 6% higher. Depending on how fast you were going it's probably normal.

Yeah that’s what is going on. Okay cool thanks!

So bit of an update here... I finally got the car on jack stands and the first thing I noticed was the top slide pin bolt was gone with the bottom one just hanging on by a thread !

After replacing and properly torquing down the bolts the car feels like new haha. No more knocking making me think a shock is blown. No more oscillating when coming to a stop etc etc.

Anyway I am happy and glad nothing serious happened from driving around with loose brake caliper
