Infotainment update

1 Attachment(s)
Apparently there is an infotainment upgrade. When I check with the car connected to WiFi, it says no updates are available.

My car is still on 091-781.

See the attached PDF for more info.

Anybody able to grab the update over WiFi?

timurrrr 09-08-2022 09:54 PM

For TLDRers: the new version ends with 122-080.

For GR86ers: you may want to follow this thread:

"Push the TUNE knob six times while simultaneously pressing down on both sides of the SEEK switch to display the Dealership Mode Menu."

(shows a menu with "Vehicle Signal", "Diagnostics Recorder", "Settings", ... menu items)

Just had this done last night, my phone has disconnected from the car every day since I bought the car in Nov, the phone is not the problem either(phone works flawlessly in my friends mustang, explorer, and my BMW). So far haven't had an issue so hopefully its fixed be prepared the update takes about 2 hours to flash over.

My wife is on her third Subaru. The HUs in the last two were a nightmare for just stopping. I bet her Impreza had 12 updates in a year. The outback even had an actual recall for it.
The point of this is that Subaru just sucks at HU choices and updates are frequent and often non effective.

I just checked mine, no updates yet, took delivery in January, Canadian car.

Ditto.

Is there another way to perform the update outside of the "check for update" option? Thanks.

Pretty good list of fixes.

Looking forward to it.

Liquidsnake 09-12-2022 05:02 PM

How do you initiate it to update?

If you go through the settings page there's one that says update, then go through the menus until you find search for update.

Whatever you do, don't actually read the PDF that was attached in the first post.

mycrors7 09-13-2022 08:08 PM

took my car into a trusted(or so i thought?) dealer today for an oil change and the radio update.

they managed to mess up both somehow.. but since this thread pertains to the update:

the tech claimed there were no updates available for my radio(which is a lie according to that TSB)

I was in a bit of a hurry but i emailed the TSB file to my service advisor and he asked me to come back in to fix the mistake and offered fuel as compensation for the drive there and back. likely wont go back for a while as it's a bit of a drive and i dont want to sit in LA traffic twice...

i also have a friend who works there and is going to try to get my the file so i can update it myself.

Grosbard 09-15-2022 09:14 PM

@mycrors7 Out of curiosity (since I live in the LA area also), would you mind saying which dealer it is? Or give a hint? DM is also fine, if you prefer.

Subaru Orange Coast

although i will make clear that they dealer DID offer to fix their mistakes and the service advisor did everything in his power to make things right. I genuinely appreciate the customer service there. it is top notch.

I didn't ask for any escalation regarding what happened, but the service advisor took it upon himself to get in touch with the manager team at the dealer and ensure something like this wont happen again.

He has been in constant contact with me and i have zero complaints about how the situation was handled.

i will still be using them for future services.

Any sort of update on if you can get those files?

unfortunely not. im still trying to get it, but Subaru has it set up in a way where they are sending dealer service departments encrypted and locked USB sticks that have the update on it.

It's too large of a file to update over the air via wifi, which is why no one is getting it updated through the radio's wifi option.

that sucks balls, defeats the whole idea of OTA

I took my car to the dealer to upgrade the firmware to 122-080. We will see if it helps with the disconnect and reconnecting of Apple CarPlay. It also fixes an issue with the WiFi update method, so maybe the next one I can get at home.

Was it free or did they charge you?

It was free and covered under the warranty.

My official report is “meh”. I guess it seems better. It still disconnects from Apple CarPlay about the same - around once a week for me. Maybe it connects back faster. Well, I am hopeful for future updates that will be able to be downloaded over WiFi according to the service bulletin.

Thanks. That's pretty cool, I didn't ask dealership to check yesterday when I was there. I would next time.

I did Mention it earlier but I’ll say again… it seemed to have been an isolated issue with the tech working on my car. I still plan to take my car there for future services. They did offer to make it right with zero questions asked and tons of apologies from the service department

So I checked my car this morning expecting nothing and got a prompt to update to F41CMM121-770 which isn't even listed in the PDF.

My theory:
- According to the PDF shared here earlier, they wanted dealers to install the 122-080 update because the OTA was too big and was causing high failure rates
- They realized that relying on dealers is a waste of time (and thus money!)
- They figured out a way to make an intermediate update (121-770) that's small enough to succeed OTA, and focuses on improving the reliability of future OTA updates
- There will be a follow-up update to 121-770 soon

Maybe. it would seem that people on 101-880 are receiving 121-880, likely people getting 121-770 are coming from 091-781.

Or I could be completely wrong. Who knows.

I got an e-mail from Subaru yesterday (12 Oct) stating there was an update for my head unit available for download starting on 12 Oct. I haven't checked version numbers or attempted the download, so I don't know if it matches what you listed above, or whether it's another update.

What bothered me about the e-mail was it stated the process would take an hour. If I remember correctly I have to have the engine running in order for the car to connect and download/update software. That means I'll have to leave my car in the garage (in range of my wifi) with the engine running. With a northern exposure and prevailing winds all of the exhaust from the car will be blown back into the house rather than escaping out the open door....

You can do it with the car in the on position with the engine off and a battery charger hooked up. If you're on wifi with a good connection it will likely take 30-45 mins.

DeathEvil 10-13-2022 12:01 PM

I was really bummed out that I would have to go to the dealership, so this is awesome news!

ruturaj001 10-13-2022 08:00 PM

Seems like we also need to get update assigned on Subaru side. Those who got the email are seeing update. I haven't got any email yet and I don't see any update. I am on 120-580.

Do you think it was VIN based? I think it's interesting that all owners didn't get the e-mail.

I ran the update yesterday. The whole process, start to finish to include download, took about 40 minutes and brought me up to version 121-770. I didn't even think to look at the version number prior to running the update. As far as I know, my car has not been updated since I drove it home in late January.

I have checked multiple times and I got no updates available every time including last night. So I assume it's VIN based. I think whatever system they have for emailing doesn't have email id associated with every VIN.

It might be dependent on current version as well. Assuming update is patch that applies over existing system opposed to in Kia where we get whole system. What was download size approximately?
