Recommendations on a tool kit for the car?
Hi Guys,
Any recommendations on a small tool kit to keep in the car? Couple screwdrivers, one ratchet, set of sockets. The sets I've seen so far a little more comprehensive than I would need. Something that fits in spare tire well would be great. Thanks! |
I have one of these as my track day tool kit. Not a huge fan of the ratchets but they get the job done. In the winter time these usually go on sale for like 20 bucks off.

i would recommend getting a bag with a zipper from your local tool supply store and building your own kit, especially if room is a factor.
in the bag get a couple screwdrivers, a 3/8 ratchet, a socket rail to put some common sockets, some common wrenches, any other tools you may commonly use in a road side repair, maybe a bottle of fix-a-flat, or i have kept a 1/2" drive impact to change the tire easier. It really depends on what you feel you are going to do roadside vs available space. |

I put a fanny pack with a zipper around the passenger seat headrest (facing the back of the car) and put in 2 of each of the following short and long 3/8ths 10mm, 12mm,14mm sockets. I keep 16mm - 22mm 1/2" impact sockets as well. A 10mm, 12mm, and 14mm wrench.
Associated ratchets, zip ties, metal zip ties, and a foot of DEI sleeving. In a little box in the trunk I keep spare plugs, hose clamps, wire strippers, needle nose pliers, an extending magnet, flashlight, vacuum caps, a spare cam position sensor, a spare MAP sensor. Other notable mentions- a roll of shop towels goes under the passenger seat, jump pack goes under the passenger seat, and a spare quart of oil is tied up in a plastic bag in the trunk as well. A blanket and spare socks. I've needed all these things and not had them in my life. Never again |
Add a TP roll and you got everything I ever needed.

I've got screwdrivers, pliers, jumper cables and a breaker bar/socket.
So far haven't needed them for my car. It's been fairly well made. What's got the most use is an umbrella. |

I wouldn't find a reason to carry too many tools. The most I would need is a 10mm wrench for changing a car battery, and a tire iron for changing flats.
Agreed what you really should have is AAA or roadside assistance. |
I keep one of these in my car at all times. I've used 3 times, mostly for helping other people out. Lots of goodies.
