What would you do with $80 000?

Hey everyone,

I think we are all in agreement that the 86 is a great car.... But if you had a budget of $80 000 to buy a new car would you still buy the 86? If not what would you get?

I'm tossing up between the 86 and the Mercedes c250 coupe.... They are completely different cars which is making the decision that much more difficult.

whitefrs 08-18-2012 09:46 PM

Come on man thats a really stupid question

Surok 08-18-2012 09:53 PM

I would go to casino and win another 20K and then go buy that 911 turbo i always wanted.

pinoyplaya 08-18-2012 09:54 PM

Get a BRZ and save the rest to modify it.

JiB 08-18-2012 10:14 PM

if i had 80k to spend on a car, id still get the 86. if it wasnt fast enough for you. 10-15k will turn the car into a monster. If you only care what people think of what brand car you are driving, then buy the merc... im pretty sure sydney Buses are mercs too...

Mr. Mcoupe 08-18-2012 10:16 PM

The answer depends on what you need out of a car
I am recently married without any kids
I could easily drop $100K on a car, but don't feel I need to
Instead I am going to use my money to invest for the future
All I need out of a car is an engaging drive
The 86 fits the bill and its cheap to boot

gwascopter 08-18-2012 10:44 PM

spend all of it on coke!

fuddbutter 08-18-2012 10:46 PM

80k i would be getting the small rwd car that i wanted previous to the 86, BMW 135i M sport.
Or a 2 -3 year old Lotus Elise.

baldolera 08-18-2012 10:49 PM

I'd be getting a BRZ Limited, wait for good mods in 1 year, and go mod crazy. However if I could spend it on anything I'd pay my Uni tuition :)

Surok 08-18-2012 11:07 PM

oh yeah i would pre order a GTS manual.. and buy a cheap GT manual to hoon around in till the GTS arrives and mod it and go nuts with it.

giraffee 08-18-2012 11:30 PM

You're asking an 86/brz/fr-s enthusiast forum, I'm pretty sure you know what most of the answers will be lol.

A used Lotus Exige, there are no new cars for $80k that I'd be interested in.

czar07 08-19-2012 04:42 AM

Evora?

Ryan1JZ 08-19-2012 05:02 AM

80,000 $1 scratchie tickets

FT-86GOD 08-19-2012 05:43 AM

20valvewynn83 08-19-2012 05:46 AM

I would buy a 1964 Lincoln Continental $30K

and then buy a Scion FRS and use the rest of the money to mod the shit out of it :party0030:

Or just buy a Lexus LS 460 L AWD :D

Now if i had $1.4m i would get the v12 Aston Martin One-77 :coolpics:

czar07 08-19-2012 05:47 AM

lol I donno, everyone was throwing out lotus model names

Z86 08-19-2012 06:00 AM

I had 80k to spend on a car. Was going to buy a 135i.
Love my 86 and got 40k to spare.

catcha 08-19-2012 10:30 AM

Go Buy an 86 and save the money if you don't like it you have 40k left to either mod it or trade your 86 and buy something else.....

SiilvA 08-19-2012 11:11 AM

all on black

Calais 08-19-2012 11:19 AM

86 it, then have 40k left over for a deposit on a unit

Turbowned 08-19-2012 11:23 AM

I'm not a fan of the C class. The interior is gawdy and there's too many buttons/controls, most of which are counter-intuitive to use. If I were going to buy a car in that segment, it would be the Audi A4/S4 or BMW 328i/335i. I'm a little biased because I drove a 2012 S4 for the past 6 months while working at Audi, but the new BMW 3 series comes with high praise, too. My parents have owned several M-B's in the past and I just can't get excited about them. If it's in your budget (not sure how much they cost in Australia), the 2013 S5 coupé is absolutely brilliant! It's just a tad better than the S4 in ergonomics, but the styling is incredible (in my opinion), and the back seat will fit passengers, unlike the 86 ;)

Obviously the 86 is a completely different animal. I suggest you try the Audis and BMW's and then drive an 86, and see which one you'd prefer to live with.

KamalT 08-19-2012 12:09 PM

Silly question in the wrong forum, but I'll play. If i had 80k. I'll still get the 86. You have to decide what you want a family sedan or a sports car. Two different animals. The C250 is a nice Merc but it caters for a different crowd.

If I had to choose something else other than these two:

RS4/ RS6
R34 GTR
HSV R8/ GTS
BMW M3
Chev Camaro
Honda NSX
TVR T350

Could go on, but thee you go

You can get 911 996 turbo's for around $80k as it is.. Nearly bought one a couple of months ago. They are coming down in price quite nicely.

pinoyplaya 08-19-2012 04:10 PM

Oh, I'd get a BRZ and a Tesla Model S.

Jordo! 08-19-2012 05:26 PM

Must be used ONLY for a car?

Either a REALLY pumped up, boosted hard top Z4 or a GT-R. I'd still be a bit short on the GT-R, so leaning towards the tuned Z4.

And for my next fantasy: Ability to shoot laser beams from eyes.

czar07 08-20-2012 12:35 AM

you guys are forgetting about the MASSIVE wait on the 86's, so that option is pretty much out for most people

Surok 08-20-2012 02:02 AM

i already said 80k i would buy a gt now to keep me amused till my gts gets here right?

czar07 08-20-2012 05:14 AM

^^^ even GT MTs are 4-8mth wait lol

JDMSushi 08-20-2012 06:06 AM

M3

Range 08-20-2012 08:59 AM

Just to clear things up...

1) im in my early 20's, single and have a fairly secured future
2) i dont gamble
3) i already have an order on an 86 gts expected to be delivered late this year

Over the weekend i test drove a renault megane Rs250 as well as a c250 coupe.... They both proved to be very impressive, however, Catcha gave some great advice...

The verdict - i will be driving an 86...at least for the next year

Nafe 08-20-2012 09:06 AM

Ideally if someone just threw me $80k I would buy my 86, maybe an ae86 and a suzuki carry van and put the rest towards my block of land :)
But seeing above that 996 turbos can be had for roughly 80k makes that very tempting as well....

tempting...hows the reliability on 996's

Wolfking 08-20-2012 10:29 AM

$80k is quite a bit. I'm a daily driver type of guy, so I'd likely super tune my FRS, then buy something AWD as a backup.

Nezz 08-20-2012 12:25 PM

Pay out my 86, and buy a Yeti to replace the Accord as a daily.

... yeah, yeah, I know. I'd use the leftover (some $25k) to reshell the S13, put big brakes under it and then use the last of it ($14k) to put together an Autech S15 bottom end, SR16VE N1 head and cams, have it all assembled and balanced with electric water pump, custom length 4-2-1 extractors and cat, superlight pulleys and custom multipack clutch, Ikeya Formula shifter and have it all built. I'd still end up in the hole by about $5k I reckon.

EDIT; Probably end up down by ten, actually, but totally worth it.

Hix 08-20-2012 12:34 PM

If you have the money sometimes it is not best to spend it... Investing and saving would be nice. I personally would like to get a new water heater and A/C unit instead of waiting for them to break, but we all have priorities and individual situations.

That being said I think many of us on the forums are coming from much higher priced cars. I personally had an A5 S-Line, A4, E92 M3, and have access to a DBS. There are also many members in the previous rides thread that have or had the M3, I saw a Lambo and Ferrari also. We all think this car is an amazingly fun car to drive even when compaired to such beasts.

So that being said you would not regret your decision if you are compairing fun and handling but if you care about interior and out of the box speed you might want to keep looking elsewhere. You cannot upgrade a car to have spirit, however.

Nafe 08-20-2012 10:28 PM

You guys in the US seem to forget/aren't aware how much more expensive cars are here :-P
