Subwoofer?

Hey guys,

Any recommendations for a subwoofer in the boot of the 86 without taking up too much room?

Last I saw, there isn't a lot of height in the boot... will this effect what you can and can't choose?

its around 3-400 usd but this way you dont have to run wires or buy an amp and it takes 15 min to install

Liking the JBL

GaN-MaN 08-18-2012 05:09 AM

That Scion one is epic win. So minimal and subtle. I want one on both sides!!

proficience 08-18-2012 05:44 AM

I'm looking at getting a mate to build me a custom fibreglass enclosure for a 10" on the side - quoted at $200 at the moment

fuddbutter 08-18-2012 06:05 AM

Yeah there all American domestic products, i have never seen any pre-fab, vehicular specific subs like that over here as there has never been the demand.

How much do you want to spend? how willing are you to get a proper fiberglass enclosure made?
how much do you want to spend on amplification for the sub?

proficience 08-18-2012 07:57 AM

Yeah I'm guess it'll cost an arm and a leg to get that scion prefab one here - probably won't be as good as a well put-together setup here - but hey I don't know much :P

My mate actually owns/runs a relatively well-established car audio/security business here in Syd so he can get me some pretty good prices on the goods. I'm probably looking at ~500 for a custom FG enclosed 10" sub on a monoblock amp as a first move - then might look to swap out the stock 2 channel amp for the door woofers.

Also, there are too many car audio threads on here - OP search next time? ty

grk 08-18-2012 08:01 AM

Would it sound good? It's facing sideways and position of the subwoofer in the car doesn't seem like it would sound that good. Anyone had one in a similar setup/car?

You obviously don't know how subwoofers work.

WTF 08-18-2012 10:18 AM

We are using a Hertz sub in our install, something like this:

Placing resonating objects on a hollow surface, facing perpendicular to the listener... Not only is it going to do a poor job of reflecting off the adjacent surfaces to the enclosure (given that they're damped by the fabric), its going to cause interference and distortion with itself (or if we're really unlucky, cancellation). Since its also firing upwards, I have a feeling its going to rattle and swallow up the 40-70hz tones...

Am I wrong, or are you just trying to look cool on the internet?

I know that JL Audio is working on a stealth box that will house a TW3-10 that will mount on the right side of the trunk (because the trunk switch is on the left side). This is an awesome speaker. I saw it at CES.

pr0j 08-18-2012 07:48 PM

my sub is bolted to the back of my left rear seat, sounds great. i'm liking the sound of these stealth boxes though, think i'll need to keep an eye on them

ChocolateNick 09-04-2012 05:00 AM

What height sub box can under the parcel shelf? I have a Kicker S10L7 floating around. I might build a custom box for it.

Ben Stef 09-04-2012 09:47 AM

A focal 27kx Sub will fit in a 10" box which will fit in our boots.

Any idea how tall that box is?

Ben Stef 09-06-2012 09:49 AM

Not entirely sure but it just fits Like 2mm to spare

ChocolateNick 09-06-2012 07:18 PM

I guess I'll just wait until my car arrives to measure the space.

ChocolateNick 09-06-2012 07:52 PM

Small but should add a little bass : http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=CS2286

That would need to go in the boot, cause you can barely fit a passengers foot under the seat much less a woofer.

fuddbutter 09-06-2012 08:14 PM

I had a similar one to that, better than the Jaycar (and around the same price)
was ok, didnt have the low's that were really needed and they become pretty useless in a noisy car, they just cant cut though the noise.

Fitted ok in the 'Lux, but the seat is up pretty high.
wouldn't fit under the drivers seat though.
