Is the 3G phase out a problem for our cars?

I read that a lot of cars rely on it for various stuff. I go back to when we used to set the points with cigarette-pack cellophane, and warn our SOs not to pull out the choke handle to hang purses on, so I'm not too hip on some of this stuff. AT&T plans to phase it out this year. Mine's a 2014. Should I get my personal affairs in order now?

Looks like we're in the clear. So far . . .

The twins dont have any connected services (unless you have a NAV system?), i dont see how the death of 3G is gonna affect us in any way.

does you car have a monthly service charge from some sort of 'on-star' or similar connected service? these cars don't normally come with anything, but there's add-ons...

it's one of the specific reasons i bought this car. it's clean, and simple with no extraneous electronic frills.

Gen 2 has starlink, but that’s 4G now.

I do have OEM nav. It's a Monogram model and I specifically wanted nav, but I sure don't want anyone tracking me. I don't get any bills for any such thing. I bought the car used.

The NAV will still work. It just won't update or get traffic reports. If I remember right the old system didn't do either of these anyway so there should be no impact for you at all.

Qwimby1 02-24-2022 11:57 AM

Yeah, it doesn't update and that's a problem. I often run into streets it doesn't know about. I've thought about contacti9ng Pioneer to see if there's any help, but I doubt there is. I once briefly owned an 05 BRZ that had a SIM card, but no such thing in this one.

I think you mean 15* not 05* BRZ

They're pretty dumb systems and are completely air gapped from anything, so any cellular phase out will not affect them in any way.

You may want to contact a toyota dealer to update your navigation, though it likely will not be free.

Worth a try.

I'm just curious as to what personal affairs you'd need to get in order, so that you can survive a 3g shutdown lol

Anyways,

Well right there was the start of your problems. You were supposed to use the match book cover to set the points - NOT the cigarette packs cellophane cover -

THEN you went and blamed your SO for the car's rough idle, because she pulled out the choke knob to hang her purse on - :slap:

I'll betcha you also drilled holes in the intake manifold to increase your car's gas milage - :iono:

Shall I go on - ?

probably best to sell all your things and build the best bunker you can muster with all your funds at this point.

You're cruel. I suppose you didn't ever mount a spark plug in the tailpipe and toggle the ignition off and on to singe the girl's bobby sox. Or clip them with the curb alarms. Right? Or play spot tag at the drive in.

Well, no. As far as clipping girls with the curb feelers, I usually had the door partially open so they could get in. The drive-in - playing tag, no, I was usually busy trying to figure out how to unclip a girl's bra - :iono:

Local Toyota dealer will sell me a part of some kind, then have a tech upload new maps. $200.

i dunno if its even worth updating it.

Our BMW X1's nav software hasnt been updated since we bought it so i live in a newer part of the city that the nav map doesnt recognize lol. Im afraid they'll charge an arm and a leg to get it updated though.....they charge 300 dollars to activate apple carplay.....screw that lol. (AA came standard on the 2018 or 2019+ cars...so we missed it by a year lol)

Also makes me glad my 2020 86 has the apple carplay/android auto HU :D
so all the map stuff gets updated as my phone does.

That seems to be in line with what others charge. Like Acura will ship you an updated navigation DVD for a smidge over 200 canadian. Audi are completely nuts, Nissan is going to charge you Like 160 to ship you an SD card, etc.

I installed the 2020 Android auto head unit in my 2017, cost a thousand but now the radio is even dumber than the one I took out and it relies on the phone for everything. The advantage is, since it's running google maps live on the phone, there's realtime traffic, and speed cameras if someone's updated it's location.
