I have officially purchased a 2014 Scion FR-S! I am excited to be a part of this community. Any suggestions on what my first aesthetic and performance mods should be?

Driver Mods.
It will outperform you on public roads.

blsfrs 02-10-2022 10:37 PM

Just enjoy driving it. It's great fun as is.

BRZZZZZZZZZZ 02-10-2022 10:51 PM

Brake pads and fluid, alignment and nice tires.

Tcoat 02-11-2022 07:23 AM

As said just drive and enjoy for a while and then decide what YOU want to do (if anything).
Things like the brake fluid, pads and tires are just fine for most people and switching out automatically is just making changes for the sake of making changes until you determine if you actually want or need something.

Enjoy it stock for a bit and research as you're driving it. In a few months re-evaluate if you feel it's lacking in any areas. My first mod was wheels as I hate the stockers. If you're doing any track work pads and fluid are needed, if just street driving it's great as is.

Drive the bloody thing. Don’t let it sit, commute, use it for vacation, just enjoy it.

Frankly, I don’t think there’s much one must do on these cars, just remember money spent on mods is kinda lost.

Find as many Ebay 3M pieces you can get your hands on and slap on a nasty ABS widebody. Be sure to also cut your springs and slam it to the ground. Chefs kiss.

As an owner of a 2014 DD (without mods), just enjoy the hell out of it. I'm a different person after it came into my life, even without mods.

soundman98 02-12-2022 12:41 AM

first mod? maintenance. unless you've got receipts, assume zero maintenance was performed up to the car's current mileage.

CONGRATULATIONS on your new purchase.

Read the drivers manual ..... then go back and read the parts that you skipped the first time.

Keep in mind that the parking stops are at least one foot closer than you think they are.

Yes it will be my daily as well. As far as mods go I was just hoping to get good tires, brakes, and maybe a cold air intake because I’m definitely going to be doing some canyon runs.

Nah no wide body for me. Was thinking more along the lines of cold air intake, headers, exhaust and a tune. But I am sensing sarcasm in this post no? Haha

Yeah I will drive it for a while before I do anything to learn the car for sure.

Will definitely enjoy driving it for a while as it is my daily. Eventually want to at least get some good tires, air intake, headers, exhaust and a tune. Want to get rid of that torque dip.

I will definitely drive it for a while. Tires are definitely a must though.

Thanks for the advice. I won’t be tracking it, just daily driving and some canyon runs here and there.

It is my daily so it went definitely get plenty of driving. I really don’t mind spending the money because it is my little project and I don’t plan on selling it.

Cold air intake is just costume jewelry on these cars. OEM intake is already a cold air intake, any aftermarket one just adds complexity and cost.

Okay good to know. What about UEL headers and a cat back exhaust? Would those improve performance? I have heard increased hp and getting rid of most of that torque dip can come from these changes.

CedN 02-14-2022 05:41 PM

Also bought a red one last year, enjoying it alot, daily, in the snow, on the track, twisty roads, auto X. No mods apart from Ds2500 pads ald RBF600 fluid. Drove a modded one and honestly, didn't think the exhaust manifold is worth the money, neither did he after driving my car. But sure if you have money that burns in the wallet :), but slightly more exhaust noise would be welcome for sure. just don't buy to big, heavy and grippy wheels, kind of ruins the fun, at least for me. Might put camber bolts up front for the track, or maybe Bilsteins dampers, and stiffer steering bushings (steering feel is one of the most important factors for making a car fun for me) further on. But it feels like most mods will make it a worse daily driver, and the costs rapidly piles up. Have fun, stay safe, and enjoy the car :)

Im not against modding, i have a pretty modded car aswell, for a different purpose, just don't start swapping all kind of parts because other people do it. Get to know the car well, maybe try other peoples frs/brz/86 if you get that chance to experience the different type of mods before you dive in.

is the 'torque dip' a problem that needs solving, or are you convinced that it must be solved because others demand it?

i'm still stock all around. either i'm cruising below it, or above it and pushing to bang off the rev limiter...

UEL has a lot more do with getting a specific sound out of the motor-- the 'subie rumble'. combined with a tune, it does stand to minimize the torque dip, as well as slightly bump the HP.

also of note, you're in cali, who is starting to crack down on aftermarket tunes thanks to the pop-tune idiots, and most recommended UEL's eliminate the catalytic converters within the headers, which are illegal emission-wise. things can be programmed out in the tune to throw fault codes, but the car will fail any visual inspection, which would result in even more expense out of pocket...

As far as I am concerned, catless headers plus tune (preferably e85) is almost required for this car. The car feels SO MUCH different it feels like an almost different car. I thought the torque dip before these mods made it almost undrivable - like I was hitting a wall at 2400 rpm. Well worth the $1,250 investment ($750 for the headers and $500 for the OFT+).

Really looking forward to reusing the headers and an e85 tune on my second gen!

Awesome, thank you for the response! Yes I will definitely be going this route in the future. Have fun with the 2nd Gen!
