Age 40+

just curious who here is age 40+, getting a GR86. :-) I am 45, so not sure if too old for a GR86. I know this car is focus toward the younger audience.

1b1d 01-04-2022 12:45 AM

45 myself. First “younger” car. Totally not having a crisis—I’m not even fifty!

obscene_gesture 01-04-2022 12:52 AM

Just get what makes you happy.

McMCOO 01-04-2022 01:03 AM

53 and getting a daily driver/toy on a cash budget aligned with my retirement goals. I don't go into debt for cars. We budget for a new car every 5 years instead of taking out a 60 month loan. This is where I was going to proclaim I don't care what people think. Wwweeeelllll...

Confession: Picking Toyota over Subaru was in part due to my bias again Subaru as a hoon symbol, and my bias towards Toyota as more mature. Biases are what they are. They don't have to be correct! [emoji41]

The rest of the decision was the front end and Neptune blue.

Lelandjt 01-04-2022 02:17 AM

42 and have one on order, with conservative options: 17" wheels, no duck tail, silver paint.
It's the sensible hold-over option between my street legal rally car of my 30s and my future fancy, high power semi-exotic of my 50s.

I’m 51, and this will be my second 86. I bought a Scion FR-S in 2013. I think the new GR will be a nice companion to my ‘69 Mustang I’m putting together, also with a 6 speed standard.

Oh, I'm 79 and I'm still not too old for my FRS. As long as I take my time getting out of it and don't trip, stumble and fall. - :sigh:

(the secret to exiting it is to place one foot on the ground then push off the door and do a "vertical combat roll" down along the side of the car till you get both feet planted) -

sneaky_pete 01-04-2022 04:40 AM

I was 47 when I bought my 86 GTS a couple of years ago - bought it off a guy who was 53.

I was going to keep it stock but a couple of things pi$$ed me off about it so I fixed those. one thing led to another and I don't want to add up how much I've spent on it now - wheels, suspension, full exhaust, tune, headunit etc etc.

good thing is a lot of my mods will fit on the new model. will probably wait a couple of years, but I am pretty sure I'll get the new one.

never too old!!

Jianlun 01-04-2022 04:43 AM

I will be 41 in a weeks time. And have a GR86 on order.

Thought I'd chime in since the BRZ is the twin of the GR86, and I'm 59.. I bought the car strictly as a toy for recreational driving. Never too old to have fun, don't care what anyone else thinks.

I chose the base model with 17" wheels and hard rubber tires for :burnrubber: also in silver. Good taste! To perhaps recapture some feelings my first car gave me, a silver, light in the rear, very tail happy hot rodded 72 Monte Carlo.

Yeah, I was going to keep mine mostly stock..But already bought new speakers and a slightly thicker rear sway bar.:sigh:

47 here. Currently have a 2020 86 GT PP, but in the process of upgrading to a GR 86 premium now (also in steel silver). My youngest is off to college, so I can justify a “2 seater”. Will also be paying cash for mine as well. I don’t like debt!

The Red One 01-04-2022 09:42 AM

Going on 67, If I was to misplace my BRZ (Summer DD) tomorrow
I would definitely be looking into this next gen as replacement.
Just having too much fun exploiting the collection of roundabouts
that have been popping up around here.
I hope that’s not a sign that senility is setting in.:D

dreamwonder 01-04-2022 09:53 AM

Whenever I get reminded, I chant 45 is the new 25.

StE92ve 01-04-2022 10:02 AM

65+ Both retired and no longer need 2 "practical" vehicles. IMHO, the GR86 is the best value in a fun to drive "sports car". Only consideration is that SWMBO is dead set against me getting a 6MT since that would be too impractical.....

That "SWMBO" stuff is exactly why the west is falling apart. Do what you want; that is what's practical.

Capt Spaulding 01-04-2022 10:17 AM

Don't swallow the "86/BRZ is for youngsters" line. I'm 68 and my '15 has made a great GT car. Any number of my more "experienced" friends here will, I think, agree. The "too old for [name your activity]" mindset is a crock.

Jegan_V 01-04-2022 10:43 AM

Honestly don't pay any heed to your age with regards to this car. Yes the target demographic is younger drivers, but if it's a very good car it can be appreciated by all ages. Only issue with these cars is entry and exit and that's dependent more on your physical shape, if you don't have an issue then there is no issue.

Frankly the first people I saw driving these cars almost 9 years ago were older guys at least 65+ or had enough greys to pass visually for retirement age.

I look at it another way. More mature drivers hopefully means less painful insurance premiums.

"this car is focus toward the younger audience"
This is exactly what was said about the first gen.
It was proven very, very wrong then and it still is.

For one thing there are not a lot of "young" people that have the money to buy cars like these new. The average age stays pretty high until the used ones hit the market. Then it starts to fall rapidly as the cars get older.

Dreamwonder makes the other point perfectly. As much as people in their forties may think they are "old" they really aren't. Not these days at any rate.
I remember a day when I thought forty was really old but since my kids are now in their forties it doesn't seem old at all!

PBR 01-04-2022 11:08 AM

42. I've owned everything from a Dino 246 GTS to an EVO X. Nothing to do with age. It's for anyone that simply wants one of the best driver's cars on sale. My buddies think I should've gotten a Cayman. I don't. Long gearing, poor steering feel, bigger/heavier with McPherson struts all around and no LSD. Never growing up...

Yep! Not like everybody here drove nothing but minivans and pickup trucks as soon as they turned 30!

I remember about 20 or so years ago when my wife and I went out to look at mini vans. With 4 kids, it sounded like a good idea. We went to the first dealer (don't remember the brand) looked at one for about 5 minutes, looked at each other and said, "I don't think we are mini van people."

58 here.

jvincent 01-04-2022 12:02 PM

Turning 56 shortly and will be trading in my 2013 FRS for a 2022 BRZ this week.

Assuming that the damn thing actually gets delivered.

Well right now they may be right! We drove down our main car sales road last night and I don't think there were 30 new cars between the 6 dealerships. For example the Chevy dealership had one new truck and nothing else.
Subaru did however have a shiny new red BRZ out front with the one Crosstrek and two Outbacks that appears to be their whole lot stock.

There is a red one in London if you want to drive.

Too far. Plus I already have the VIN.

Who'd have thunk having a delivery date over the holiday season during a pandemic would be such an issue? :bonk:

The funny part is that in all probability the ones that have arrived but were not ordered will likely sit on the lots until spring in normal Canadian sportscar sales fashion.

bcj 01-04-2022 12:15 PM

If you look at the range of vehicles available at the same price, it's pretty freakin dire.
What senior will sneer at 30mpg? Rear wheel drive? Manual transmission?
For that little money? Sorry, I'll clip some coupons for that value.

True. Mine was a dealer pre-order that happened to match the specs I was actually going to order so I lucked out in that sense.

I ordered in July doubting that BRZs will sit on lots, especially in today's market.

I enjoy the 'older' person in sports cars, there is a retired gent in our neighbourhood who drives a Ford Fiesta ST. The Fiesta is seen as very young person's car but I admire him for having a car that he enjoys. However, 20 somethings in supercars (again pretty common where I live) makes me nervy.. Just don't sit right with me..

I may not be going strong any more but the car sure is.

You missed the Canadian (and many northern states probably) reference.
Not saying they won't sell but we have a little thing called "winter" up here that impacts performance car sales far more than you would believe. Guys that order knowing they will come in the winter are fine with it but many will just wait for spring. It happens with every make and model and is not BRZ specific.

The numbers tell the tale completely.
