Doug DeMuro's video on the GR86

You've probably seen his 2022 BRZ video before, but here's a new one about the GR86:

Looks like this wasn't posted on the forum before.
Sharing here in case anyone missed it.

That white looks good there. If our primary performance vehicle wasn’t already white (Sienna mini van) I’d consider it.

jordan7831 12-13-2021 09:25 AM

Its pretty lackluster. He forgot to mention the gauge cluster is in the shape of the boxer engine.

PulsarBeeerz 12-13-2021 01:16 PM

When he said it needs more power and basically has the same engine in the Ascent I was reminded that his isn't to be taken too seriously.

Basically, he said "They added more power which is great so I won't complain about the power. Now that said, it needs more power."

So there it is, the "more power" chant has begun anew.

I like his reviews for the most part but Doug really needs to cut back on the Red Bull.

I have to agree. If you blacked out the fin and the tail, it would look even better. Honestly, it comes close to making me like it. Close...

Apparently the gauge cluster on the USDM's doesn't have the same animation. Can't remember where I read that.

Savage geese is pretty reliable. Honest about things.

RToyo86 12-13-2021 04:12 PM

I watch Doug's videos for the quirks and features more than his actual opinions on how the cars drive.

mazeroni 12-13-2021 04:18 PM

Ascent engine coming in 2023. Toyota Supra cancelled. All confirmed.

It must suck to drive cars that do 0-60 in 2 seconds, then have to go and get in this thing. Probably messes with your perceptions a lot. Like you have to try really hard to always remind yourself that this thing starts at $29K and 0-60 in 6 seconds and a mediocre interior is all acceptable.

PBR 12-13-2021 04:37 PM

He's not a driver. He's a car guy. Great for a general overview but he can't tell his audience how a sports car handles at the limit or over it. He's a car guy. Not a driver abd there is a difference.

I think I enjoy Doug's reviews because he reminds me of what I defined in my Builder's Log a while back as a "car dude" which I probably have a lot of in me.

Give me something with wheels and an engine and I enjoy it for what it is.

PBR 12-13-2021 05:08 PM

Absolutely. Not putting him down. He has incredible knowledge and not everyone wants or needs to be on a track to enjoy their car. Prefer more driver focused content but he's always a great starting point.

Spektyr 12-13-2021 05:40 PM

Basically, it's like watching a young Jay Leno being absolutely serious (no jokes) at 1.6x speed.

He should seriously have bigger arms - all that flailing about should build muscle.

His scoring is interesting, but combining "Weekend" and "Weekday" driving scores into an overall score is basically a recipe for making any truly awesome car look mediocre. Oh, you built this to a purpose? Well it sucks at the stuff you didn't build it to do so now your score is ordinary.

If it scores better than the GR86 on "practicality" it's not a sports car. It's a hopped-up commuter. You can put a hot enough engine in a Honda Crossfit to make it really, really fast. But it's not ever going to be sexy.

I somewhat disagree with you here.
For someone who needs one car that does it all, that's a viable way to score. You know, Golf GTI and WRX are popular for a reason.

What's good about his scoring system is that he still breaks down by sub-groups like "weekend" and "daily".
He makes those available front and center — if all you need is a car for the weekend, just look at the "weekend" score.

He also makes it clear that it's subjective, even calling it a DougScore.

ichitaka05 12-13-2021 05:58 PM

I stop watching his vid. A lot of info is incorrect and from the behind the scene, he's a rude person. I rather watch other small youtuber channels than give him my view.

That's just branding.

Where I grew up, there's a saying "The way you call a boat is the way it's going to sail".

When Doug first introduced the DougScore, he made it clear that it's his own subjective scoring system, and you take it the way you want. You can skip it altogether, use only parts of it, or start 10+ page holy wars on forums if you're into that kind of things.

dragoontwo 12-13-2021 09:28 PM

The latter of course. This is the internet after all.

GoodToBeKing 12-14-2021 05:18 PM

I can't watch him, I don't get the appeal.

Give me Topher, Throttle House and Savagegeese all day long over Doug.

I'm not a fan of his style, and I listen more than watch, but what I do like is he usually goes over the car in minute detail where others tend to want to go say "see how much I can drift it". Since any car I buy is going to be at least a semi-daily driver (sorry I don't buy cars for light duty) I want to know those things.

I do balance that out by watching all the ones you mention as well.

I can see that. We probably agree on his style/delivery...

I like that those guys track and autocross cars, have a great sense of humor, and have great video production levels.

Sasquachulator 12-17-2021 12:11 AM

I also more or less watch it for the quirks and features...but even then he misses some sometimes. (The 2022 IS500 for example, i dont think he likes the car...didnt seem to like the 2021 IS350, but he never mentions the touchscreen but always disses the trackpad. Which is weird because in the IS350 video he made it known that the touchscreen is available so you dont have to use the touchpad).
I also believe he is bias towards certain vehicles and brands, and is one of those "MOAR POWERRS" type of drivers.

His dougscore never makes any sense either...but i never really follow it. His two categories (weekend, daily) seem to have to "balance" each other out in some way so if one side score sucks the other has to make up the score somehow to make the overall score not seem super bias. (he can talk big about features but then give the car a 4/10 and another car like a 6/10 for less features)

Blighty 12-17-2021 09:33 PM

I think its a good scoring system for most cars people will buy.

Its not really a good scoring system for sports cars, and he is a bit inconsistent to his review which indicates potentially some massaging to get a final number. For example he talks about how much he thinks the looks is a big upgrade, yet his scores don't reflect that.
