Thats a serious weight cut I mean the original goal was 2200 wasn't it? I just don't see how they are going to be able to pull that off with creature comforts, decent inteiror and safety laws but boy do I wish they the best.

Should merge this with the current thread.

This should be interested to see what Mazda introduces in the next several years including the RX9!

I heard about the insane weight reduction before, but that pic.... wow! If it looks like that, then I might give the Miata a hard look. C'mon Japan, I gotta get a car at some point!

MiguelAE86 06-30-2011 07:23 PM

 Imagine what a fun little bargain this would be used, just like older miatas are now! also, this may give the FT86 a run for its money in terms of "purist...-ism"? lol

they just cant build a car that light today for a reasonable price. mazda already cutting weight down to the gram. where do you think they can take 700 lbs from?

Apparently the US has a safety standard of testing car crashes with the occupant not wearing a seatbelt. As the only major market to do this, it adds hundreds of pounds to many lightweight concepts, probably even our own FR-S. If the government can let us decide whether we'd like to be safe or not in the occurance of a accident, perhaps 1800 lbs may be feasible. I mean, look at the elise . . .

This proves that the entire system is FUBAR... They make seatbelt laws, and then continue to nerf us from our own incompetence anyways...

Also, we don't need cars that can safely hit people, we need smarter drivers and pedestrians who can stay out of the damn road... :bonk: *contunies life in the nanny state*

All of the new safety features mandated every year just add weight, and decrease efficiency. Yet the government requires better efficiency too? Sounds like a catch 22 if you ask me.

There is no way Mazda can make a lighter car than a Elise without using exotic lightweight materials and that would hike the price up significantly. This is suppose to be a bargain roadster so I would say to expect at least a 200 lb reduction which is still fine.

1660 07-08-2011 02:07 PM

I might wait for this car. Is there a MX-5 forum?

You have....
miata.net
clubroadster.net
mazdas247.com

Miata.net probably has the best information regarding the ND.
