1 Attachment(s)
Well got wacked by a rock first time happens truck had rock falling I tried to get out the way got me on the side.. never had that in my frs.. now my brz ts got a nice rock wack looks like needs replacing...
Going through insurance first time idk 😐 I'm I going to pay out of my pocket? Thanks |
Depends on your insurance. If you have comprehensive, sometimes there is no deductible on glass. In any case, a new windshield, as repairs go, is a relatively cheap repair even if you have to do it out of pocket.

Well heat here in California made it go even farther 😑 kinda knew that was going to happen.. I cover the car and mark a black tape and hours later it's way out.. its going to go through the whole end ..

Saw this.. maybe I'll get 🤔 I'm sure it's all same up to 2020?
I'll have my neighbor install it as he does windshield replacements and repairs |
should probably talk to your neighbor about that plan first. sometimes used parts cost more to install because they need more prep.

I just went through the same thing. The $439 glass is probably not OEM Subaru glass. I ended up requesting OEM from Safelite and using my insurance. It was something like $850 for the OEM glass.

Not sure if it has anything to do with being OEM glass or not, but anecdotally...
Our '93 325i had the original windshield for it's entire life and it didn't start to get that "sandblasted" look, especially noticed on misty nights in oncoming headlights, until it was over 200K miles. Our '88 SL560 had what I believe was the original windshield when we bought it with 86k on it. It was badly fogged, i.e., the protective film layers had failed somehow, and it was very scary to drive at night; oncoming headlights pretty much blinded you from all the glare. We replaced the windshield at a typical windshield vendor, maybe safelite. Don't remember. 50k miles later, it's already showing some sandblasting symptoms. The '13 FRS w/ 93K miles on it, original windshield, is currently in better shape than the SL's 50K windshield, and slightly better shape then the 220K windshield on the 325i, but does have some grit wear visible. Whether it's relative longevity compared to the SL's cheap replacement windshield is due to OEM glass or not, I have no idea. Anyone? |
Getting a used front window will be a crapshoot.
Mine has micro pitting all over. I wouldn't want to have it replaced with one that has worse. I'd much prefer a minty fresh one. |

I went down the aftermarket part hole once on a previous car. The fit was horrific(huge gaps everywhere), and that was after the high end body shop spent a full day making it better than it was out of the box... It was like stretching a thong over a gorilla ass. Move it one way to fix this seam, and the other side opens up too far... |

And no, I don't want to know how you arrived at this conclusion. :eyebulge: |

Honestly I let Safelite handle it all but it looks like new seals were needed for the install.

OEM glass is a better quality than the China glass your replacement will be. I went through this twice. China glass will have a weird fishbowl effect too. Quote:
It's not exactly a seal, it's just a dam for the sealant used. |
with how expensive oem glass replacement is, has anyone looked into the new windshield protective film they have out nowadays? it's pretty pricey but should help protect against anything smaller than a larger pebble kicked up from a truck.
|
I had also faced the same issue recently. I am checking with my insurance company and hopefully I don't have to pay from my own pocket.

See if you can get the OEM glass cheaper...$644 is the MSRP, dealers cost is $386.50

@Opie : thanks for the statistics though. Good stuff to know.

I'd up it by 1.14%. |
Avoid Pilkington: I've had 2 on my 2019 BRZ (I have bad windshield luck) and they both were the waviest I've ever encountered.
|
If you need a new windshield, the best option may be to go with a company that offers a no-hassle, no-fuss replacement service. This is especially helpful if you have to take your car in for service or repair elsewhere in the meantime.

Safelite did mine and it fogs up quite a bit at night and early am. Driving to work in Florida with the heat on is miserable in the summer

All the reports of wavy glass have me wondering: don’t DOT regulations cover aftermarket safety related parts? I’d think optical inferiority would be showstopper.
