Well got wacked by a rock first time happens truck had rock falling I tried to get out the way got me on the side.. never had that in my frs.. now my brz ts got a nice rock wack looks like needs replacing...

Going through insurance first time idk 😐 I'm I going to pay out of my pocket?

Thanks

MuseChaser 08-13-2021 04:20 PM

Depends on your insurance. If you have comprehensive, sometimes there is no deductible on glass. In any case, a new windshield, as repairs go, is a relatively cheap repair even if you have to do it out of pocket.

Sucks man, I always have this fear. I try to avoid being behind trucks as much as possible, but it happens once in a while. Almost had this situation when one merged off an exit and a rock came flying into my windshield. Real loud noise, but it looked more like it made a little crusty chip in the glass, but no crack - got lucky. I cringe every time I'm behind trucks and all I hear is my paint taking tons of rock chips

Yeah I'm normally looking ahead Whats in front of me and slow down in the slow lane and let trucks get away from me.. this my second time getting wacked .. was in my interga that one was dead center and sounded like a gun shot .

Well heat here in California made it go even farther 😑 kinda knew that was going to happen.. I cover the car and mark a black tape and hours later it's way out.. its going to go through the whole end ..

Yea, I'd check with insurance first, they may cover it but may require you use "their guy" (most use Safelite in the US)

saw vids of replacement on this cars and its pretty quick and simple too.. glad it dont have no fancy camera driving aid and all that stuff that most cars have now days ... looks like they are busy for the next week or 2...

hopefully this windshield wont collapse when i drive it like that for now :iono: lol doubt it will

Saw this.. maybe I'll get 🤔 I'm sure it's all same up to 2020?

I'll have my neighbor install it as he does windshield replacements and repairs

soundman98 08-15-2021 09:55 AM

should probably talk to your neighbor about that plan first. sometimes used parts cost more to install because they need more prep.

btw any idea if our cars have wires for defroster for front windshield ? im assuming not? it just uses the hot air from vents

Skot 08-15-2021 10:41 PM

I just went through the same thing. The $439 glass is probably not OEM Subaru glass. I ended up requesting OEM from Safelite and using my insurance. It was something like $850 for the OEM glass.

yeah my local subaru has new oem for like 680 and said a rubber seal gasket was like 80.... so your total was about 850 installed with safelite?

ill have my neighbor install mine ill buy it from subaru and pick it up

Why OEM glass? Is it made from something special somehow? Primarily just curious since I'm of the "whatever is cheaper" variety.

MuseChaser 08-16-2021 12:07 PM

Not sure if it has anything to do with being OEM glass or not, but anecdotally...

Our '93 325i had the original windshield for it's entire life and it didn't start to get that "sandblasted" look, especially noticed on misty nights in oncoming headlights, until it was over 200K miles.

Our '88 SL560 had what I believe was the original windshield when we bought it with 86k on it. It was badly fogged, i.e., the protective film layers had failed somehow, and it was very scary to drive at night; oncoming headlights pretty much blinded you from all the glare. We replaced the windshield at a typical windshield vendor, maybe safelite. Don't remember. 50k miles later, it's already showing some sandblasting symptoms.

The '13 FRS w/ 93K miles on it, original windshield, is currently in better shape than the SL's 50K windshield, and slightly better shape then the 220K windshield on the 325i, but does have some grit wear visible. Whether it's relative longevity compared to the SL's cheap replacement windshield is due to OEM glass or not, I have no idea. Anyone?

bcj 08-16-2021 12:32 PM

Getting a used front window will be a crapshoot.
Mine has micro pitting all over. I wouldn't want to have it replaced with one that has worse.
I'd much prefer a minty fresh one.

It's at least made to oem specs. Aftermarket is like everything else- it's cheaper because they don't need to maintain much of any standard. In this case, the fit could be a little off, or the hardness could be lower. Or any special coatings might be more thinly applied.

I went down the aftermarket part hole once on a previous car. The fit was horrific(huge gaps everywhere), and that was after the high end body shop spent a full day making it better than it was out of the box... It was like stretching a thong over a gorilla ass. Move it one way to fix this seam, and the other side opens up too far...

And no, I don't want to know how you arrived at this conclusion.

Yeah it was something like that. The insurance said they'd cover it regardless of what glass I selected. I just had to special order it from Satellite.

I replaced my Forester glass with aftermarket and I wasn't really happy with it. The fitment looked odd and it seems to be missing some sort of anti fog treatment or something. The inside gets dirty so quickly. Just didn't want to take that chance this go around.

im looking at getting OEM ... did you have to order any other seals ? or just the windshield ? im looking a the parts number and theres other seal parts ...i think they will need to be replaced also as the rubber glue sealant is likely caked on the rubber seals and cant use that anymore:iono:

Skot 08-18-2021 12:04 AM

Honestly I let Safelite handle it all but it looks like new seals were needed for the install.

OEM glass is a better quality than the China glass your replacement will be. I went through this twice. China glass will have a weird fishbowl effect too.

It's not exactly a seal, it's just a dam for the sealant used.

saltywetman 08-28-2021 04:37 AM

with how expensive oem glass replacement is, has anyone looked into the new windshield protective film they have out nowadays? it's pretty pricey but should help protect against anything smaller than a larger pebble kicked up from a truck.

davenunez 11-10-2022 02:39 PM

I had also faced the same issue recently. I am checking with my insurance company and hopefully I don't have to pay from my own pocket.

See if you can get the OEM glass cheaper...$644 is the MSRP, dealers cost is $386.50

There is a 98.86% probability that Daven is just a bot or spammer.

bcj 11-10-2022 08:12 PM

@Opie : thanks for the statistics though. Good stuff to know.

Still have faith in humanity I see.
I'd up it by 1.14%.

Avoid Pilkington: I've had 2 on my 2019 BRZ (I have bad windshield luck) and they both were the waviest I've ever encountered.

devwilkey 12-20-2022 04:21 AM

If you need a new windshield, the best option may be to go with a company that offers a no-hassle, no-fuss replacement service. This is especially helpful if you have to take your car in for service or repair elsewhere in the meantime.

One that has bots do the work?

Lantanafrs2 12-20-2022 11:04 PM

Safelite did mine and it fogs up quite a bit at night and early am. Driving to work in Florida with the heat on is miserable in the summer

I've seen wavy aftermarket windows and I'm not a fan. I have a 3+ foot crack on mine right now and have zero desire to replace it. Started with a rock chip on day 6 of owning the car (truck in the OPPOSITE direction kicked up a rock) and now it's a giant crack across 2/3 of the windshield. Meh. :bonk:

Capt Spaulding 12-21-2022 08:18 PM

All the reports of wavy glass have me wondering: don’t DOT regulations cover aftermarket safety related parts? I’d think optical inferiority would be showstopper.
