Trading FRS for BRZ
A few weeks back, I was told my BRZ would not be coming in until November so I bought a FRS. Well the BRZ came in today and I went to have a look. I was not planning on making a change because I really like my FRS. But I think I have been won over. Here's why:
1. Upgrading the felt seats to the leather/alcantra. 2. Upgrading the Fischer-Price climate knobs to toggle switches. 3. Upgrading to radio with nav. 4. Upgrading to push button start. 5. Upgrading to heated seats. I also get the rear spoiler, which I can honestly live without. I will miss the FRS floor mats, the white bit on the tach and the piano black trim pieces. Of course I can only do this if I can sell the FRS and not take a total bath because....I got either keyed or swiped in a parking lot this weekend :mad0260: |
You should hold out for the Corinthian leather seats...
|
Err, nice job?
|
Why not keep your FR-S until 2014 model comes out so that you don't need to deal with the initial problems 2013 model has? Unless the car being the first year model is important to you.
|
Any trade will be a lost of ~3k to dealer for their resale, plus you pay another new tax ~2.9k for new BRZ. I would enjoy the frs for few years and trade in for the special edition STI or any improved FRS special version in later year.
|
You rushed in bro, now you gotta pay for impatience. :iono:
|
Wow, just wow.
|
sounds like a dumb idea to me unless you can make your money back. At least you can do an in and out on the car at the dealer to save some $ on tax.
Oh and there is no leather in any Subaru car, stop calling it that. |
Lose $3000+ for a slightly better interior. Excellent reasoning.
|
Ok, ok. Geeze. Maybe not then! I do like the FRS....I'm just so very impulsive!
|
This would be a really stupid financial move. The $5K to $6k you'll end up spending to trade in the car and buy the more expensive one will go a long way for upgrades, like Don's turbo kit. If the BRZ upgrades are worth $5K to you, go for it, but they're not to me.
|
well I hope those features are worth like $10k to you because that's probably what you are about to be raped of.
|
See and this is why I talk things out. Nothing like a perfectly good flaming to stop me from doing something stupid.

plus the front of your car wont be sexy anymore if you sell
|
I say just wait...who knows maybe a few years something better then the FRS/BRZ will come out...you never really know.
|
Their are MUCH better Nav units that what is on the BRZ stock. It is an awful interface, just completely shit; works well though...
The seats can be changed. I bet Clazzio will have something for the FR-S seat before too long. I bet they will come out with a way to swap the A/C units before too long. Not worth the 5k minimum you would be losing from trade-in and taxes. Push-button start and keyless entry are great but they have after market systems that do the same thing. Be patient and someone will have a DIY on it for the FR-S. Not sure why anyone 'needs' heated seats. If going from a base point then yes get the BRZ if you like the features, that is why I did it. If you are trading in a FR-S for it then no, just no. |
Sorry you bought the wrong car :(
Go to an audio place, and have them to install nav. Go to an upholstery place and have them install real leather + heated seats. Push button start isn't all it's cracked up to be, but is cool. Cover the knobs with leather too. Money saved, problem solved. |

Yeah - the way I look at it... would you rather trade it and lose $5K for a slightly better interior and a worse front end?
Or would you rather put that $5K towards a supercharger kit in 6-12 months? It's an easy call for me. |
Someone else tried to trade his in to the dealer and he was quoted $18K.

As most have said, not a smart move financially. I don't even think it's a good idea in general, the cars are near identical. If you want the other options, do the mods yourself (or pay somebody to). It'd be a hell of a lot cheaper that way.
The only way you'd make good money is private sale. With the availability and demand, you'd probably be able to about break even if you have THAT low miles. Even a $1-2k hit would be far less than the one from the dealers. All in all, I wouldn't sell it just to buy the same car again with creature comforts. Yeah, I know they're nice, but it's not impossible to put them in afterwards. Unless you care about OEM, it'd be cheaper to get it done yourself anyways. |
Dude, unless you have money to literally burn, I think this would be an epic fail. You are far better off just modding the FR-S.
You will be trading in one of the sexiest car faces for a mustachioed one! Spend the cash making your car way nicer than the BRZ. |
I wish they had cooling seats

Still laughing, not sure if it was meant to be funny though :bellyroll: |

either way, it's a stupid decision. Just keep that Scion. |
I debated on doing something similar as the OP. Was quoted 22.5k for a 2k mile FR-S. Decided to save the 3.5k.

That's what I'm planning to do. First-year models always have their own quirks and issues (personal experience). You should wait it out. And if you really want a first-year BRZ, the second year model is no different really, it's just a couple of tweaks under the hood (no pun intended), there's no cosmetic or performance difference because it's the same generation. |
sounds pretty irrational mate. just upgrade to the brx stuff it would be cheaper and less hassel. dont rush into more debt and problems

yeah spend the $5k and turn you FR-S into a real Toyota 86 loaded out, you take that money and get a turbo kit installed.
I was all down on getting a BRZ, until i saw the turbo kits coming out...FR-S all the way baby! |
I understand what the OP is saying, but I definitely wouldn't spend the money just to trade up.
This is the biggest reason I was angry about the fact that the car came to the US as a Scion and not a Toyota. Had we gotten the Toyota, we could have optioned out the cars a bit more. |
Who said there's no leather in a Subaru?
Subaru Sales site says: Leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob, and brake handle. Limited models add leather-trimmed upholstery with Alcantara® seat inserts. Is this a lie? :iono: Leather is leather. It didn't say Pleather or faux............ |
I had a little bit of remorse but I knew if I went the BRZ route I would of been waiting for who knows how long.
If I still feel this way in a few years I'll just trade up to the 2014-2015 BRZ. Either way tho i'm not losing any sleep over this |
I'd wait a year either way and get a 2014 instead. Private sale in 1 year should net roughly equal to what a dealer would offer you today.
