A Message to Toyota

ok look, here in the states you have your Scion brand and We know you're trying to make it more popular. but giving them the FT-86 is a bit of a slap to the face to the Toyota enthusiasts.

at the start, you said this car was to to be reminiscent of the AE86 one of your more popular cars and a care many of us fell in love with much like the 2000GT, the GT-Four, MR-2, and Supra.

for me personally this said to me, "Toyota's finally going to have a sports car again, not only that, but an affordable one too!" and this thought generally made me happy, the only issue is, I reading alot of media saying the FT will retain it's Toyota badge in Europe, Japan, and Austrailia, but get the Scion name ONLY here in the states to this I say, I hope you at least give us the option of having it as a Toyota or a Scion or you may just see a spike in sales of Toyota badges and steering wheels

(Note- I do not hate the Scion name I just feel the character/spirit of the car will be somewhat lost)

You just think that the badge on the front is going to change the aerodynamics and add 30 HP right?

Gotcha.

How about call it "Scion Supra"! Sound very good right?

Sabastian 06-24-2011 09:35 AM

If anything, the Scion badge on the nose of the car will likely help to keep the price under control. Plus, if it really bothers you that much, there's always the Subaru version.

bofa 06-24-2011 09:43 AM

Are you sure you don't drive a Bravia?

Laika 06-24-2011 11:40 AM

Slap on some Toyota badges and call it a day. I don't like it either but it's happening. You still know that deep down it's a reincarnation of the ae86 so who cares? Hell if anything the fact that it's a flat 4 and Subaru will have one too should be taking away from it's spirit yet it's still the one I'm buying

:reposthorse:

no but have you seen the Scion marketing lately? or even the revealing of the FR-S? It feels like it's run by an old dude desperately trying to be young

secondly, branding it as a scion means introducing it to new buyers (i.e. teens looking for first cars and the like) and let's face it. teenagers are morons when it comes to being behind the wheel

and call me crazy, but I get the feeling a lot of them will want this car so they can be like Fast and the Furious and end up wrecking them, which will in turn, raise insurance on the car it self

one reason why I said release it as a toyota and scion (give us the option of buying either) you know? They've done it before (see Toyota Matrix and Scion xA/xD Toyota Celica and 1st gen tC) so why not now?

looks like I will be investing in some badges after I obtain one

and oddly I don't feel the same way. Subaru was been hardcore when it comes to motorsports and it showed with each incarnation of the sti so them working with Toyota on this new FR car made it all the more sweeter

IBTL,

Get the badges and steering wheel bra. Scion needs this car to stay afloat to survive they're losing steam, not going to happen in the US, that is if Scion went under before release! :flame:

Personally I think Toyota should dissolve Scion and then make their vehicles Toyotas that have the same name and features as the "JDM" counterparts. Price shouldn't have to change that much, make consumers haggle, it's part of the business Joe and John doesn't mind paying $24-25k.. I'll gladly pay 21k after a few hours or days. People just want things given to them without working for it.

Ford has been cheap in US for years and that almost killed them until they started release close to World/EU versions here the last couple of years. Might I add has done well with little to no help from big brother.

GM had to get rid of some fat too although different circumstances than Ford or Scion business models. They just offered the car like 3 times(like you're asking), different names, exteriors, semi-different interiors. That to me is stupid, look where stupid got them.

Subaru is the MC for me, safe, fast and full of love. The Toyota fans can have at it with each other, whether it's a Scion or Toyota, I just wish Subaru grew a mind of their own for the initial release and basically crap on Toyota/Scion with a turbo variant from the get go versus a mid cycle refresh.

If Toyota branded it here in the US and it was cheaper than the Subaru, I'm not going to lie I'd probably get that instead. I consider Toyota and Subaru to be the elegance of Japan. So with that elegance with motorsports nature lurking under the skin of the car, that to me is win-win situation. But Scion name/culture kills that for me, Subaru keeps it alive for me. Call me a yuppy or a badge snob, like in that link/thread in your comments I don't care, I just want to make sure my money is spent right. We will see after 10 years which variant is worth more and what car meets you preferred. Reason why I left the Honda scene after like 9 years and why I probably wont own one again, been Honda-free for 3 years.

serialk11r 06-24-2011 04:35 PM

Not to feed the brand argument, but I somehow feel like the only people who see Scion as having distinctly inferior brand image would be enthusiasts. Sure Scion doesn't have pedigree/heritage/whatever but to normal people on the street who aren't even into Toyotas, they see Toyota as being the company that makes cushy "value" transportation. Scion does exactly the same thing. My friend (into cars) the other day told me that Toyota can't make a good sports car and he has no faith in the FT86, because they don't have any sports cars right now. While that's not exactly true as they are a very old company that has a lot of experience, I think it goes to show that there might be less of a difference in image than people think. To be honest I don't even see Scions around that much, and the drivers tend to be older looking people who aren't aggressive at all, and I think that's what most people will think if they see a scion badge on your car (I bet most people don't even recognize the Scion badge, I didn't until I came to this forum rofl).

I haven't owned a car before but I can kinda understand why people would be disappointed. I imagine it's a bit disappointing to be getting a car without an established brand, it just feels like something is missing. However if it's a great car, I think I can live with looking at a Scion logo on the steering wheel everyday (might pull it off though). Just pull the badge off, and everyone will go WHOA what is that sick looking car  Or keep it on and people will still do the same :)

I know its just an opinion, but its pretty pointless having this discussion now (again).

Agreed, actually they should just make trd it's own sub brand like they are doing with the prius and have it be their sport/sporty cars. Stick the ft86 under it and a beefed up version to replace the supra and maybe one or two other cars.

Fixed it for you.

They will never make TRD an actual brand like Scion. Do you know why?

Because then they would have a lot of Regular Cars and Trucks. Then a different lot with the same damn Cars and Trucks on it, only with TRD branding. "Hello customer how are you? Oh, you want to look at a TRD Tacoma and a Regular Tacoma? Let me show the Regular then you can walk 50 Yards to see the TRD version."

It would be asinine. How do you market something like that? Yeah it's just like the Tacoma! But it's a whole different brand! Where would place something like the XRunner? It's a Tacoma, but not a TRD Version.

Scion's here to stay. Get used to it. If Toyota ever does a Supra again, it will be a Scion.

Now that would be asinine. It would cost 45k+ for a Supra today. Nobody is going to pay 40+k for a Scion for at least the next 10 years, if the brand is still around.

As is said above scion couldn't sell a car that expensive, the 86 is even a bit high for the price point the brand is suppose to be at. If there is ever a supra again it would be a lexus.

I'm doubtful that it'd be a Lexus, otherwise it'd fall under the F Sport Performance division and not be called a Supra at all. Nissan can carry the GT-R under its own badge rather than an Infiniti here in the States. I assume that Toyota could do the same if they were to resurrect the Supra name.

Wouldn't surprise me though...a premium high performance sports car sounds lexus bound.

While Infiniti has been more devoted to luxury for upper middle class consumers to carry a high end sports car like the GT-R.

Lexus has a larger and broader demographic for their line up. And even the MKIV supra would fit as a lexus if the car was released as a new car in todays economy and market trend.

n2oinferno 06-29-2011 01:23 AM

I'm not discounting Lexus making another premium high performance sports car. I just don't think they'd call it a Supra. It doesn't fall in line with their naming model.
