Engine Blew!

Pop, my engine went. I started laughing when it did because it was so obvious. There is oil on the ground and an obvious hole in the motor. I’ll probably be parting out what I can, and probably sell my supercharger if all looks well with it.

I was on it on the way to work. It was early, but I always drive aggressive. I hit a big bump during a pull, so I don’t know if that was part of it, but then it went.

I had new AMSOIL in it and 82k on the motor and maybe 25k on the supercharger with maybe 5k on the 75mm pulley. Pop! It is what it is. I might just sell the car for a loss and let someone else deal with it. We will see.

Damn, I'm sorry man. Best of luck.

Isn’t this stuff suppose to be inside the engine?

FR-S2GT86 04-22-2021 12:31 PM

Ouch! I know you had a lot into that build. Sorry man. But at least I know now not to move up to the 75mm pulley.

You could always keep the twin and wait until there's a crate electric motor available.

Let go pretty hard to do that much damage. Did it make any noise before it went?

wbradley 04-22-2021 01:09 PM

It would be so much better if there could be a happy ending to this story. Good luck.

I'm sorry to hear it...your build was amazing :(

What a shame :( glad the failure didn't also incur a safety consequence

That is such a fear of mine. The way these engines let go makes me afraid of oil spray getting on the exhaust, there was one instance of this after a J02 recall failure that led to an engine bay fire.

It made a bang when I hit the bump and then grinding like a spun rod and then clank, clank, clank as shit went through the block. It was pretty epic. Surprisingly, I had this sheepish look on my face like, “hehe, I pushed it too hard.” I’ll rip it apart tomorrow and see what is going on.

There was steam from the coolant, but no loss of traction or anything crazy.

It is funny because I was probably a month or two away from converting it back to a CARB/stock condition for smog and then I was going to leave it that way for nursing school. Oh well, but I have plenty of cash. I will just need to figure out what I want to do. I might sell the supercharger or not. I might part stuff or not. I might sell it all as is or not. I might do a swap and have it NA or not. I’ll have to assess the damage and think about it.

Yikes that sucks to hear :(

Maybe hitting the bump caused the wheel speed to change enough that when it caught traction it put a bunch of extra load on the drivetrain?
Not that it matters.

Hopefully there's a happy ending to this but I get cutting losses if it's time to move on.

Sorry man, I couldn't resist that opportunity.

I always invite anybody to make a witty comeback at my expense. All I ask it that they put some thought into it instead of resorting to name-calling or unnecessary insults from left field. Just put some thought into it. It really is an art form. Just ask @Tcoat, he knows.

This is to prepare you for the pain that is nursing school, good luck!

Yes, that would be my opinion of what happened also. Heavy duty clutch plate, sticky tires, extreme torque through the drivetrain combined with a loss of traction, the engine instantly increasing in RPM's, then the tires instantly gaining traction again and SNAP!

With all that torque, something was eventually going to give.

That's a drag, been there. Tough decision. I opted for a new motor.

zberz 04-22-2021 04:23 PM

Ouch. This is why since I went FI I've been slowly conditioning my wife by casually dropping "when I'm going to need that 15K to build a new FA20" in conversations.

To be completely honest, I think anything that takes out an NA motor is just as likely, if not more likely, on a built engine. Oil pressure issues, bearing issues, etc are not addressed by having a block built with stronger components. If I were to go back to NA, I would get the lowest mileage used engine I could find and never touch it

Yes those things are addressed

Is this in Yen or am I seeing 43K for an HKS engine? I'll take my chances at IAG.

No that's USD but it's fully assembled just drop it in.

Also, you can get the Step 1 for $23k you don't have to go all out.

IAG addressed all the issues. Stage 1 + NA= win

It probably would have been fine on the 85mm pulley. 75mm pulley puts the car around 400+, so doubling the horsepower on stock internals. I really think the bump had a big thing to do with it. That amount of sudden jarring jerk at 12+ psi at the time was enough probably, but who knows?

You are interested in the K24 swap as I dropped the idea for easy HP in the JRSC sitting unboxed in my garage. Sorry to hear about the engine, but it was fun while it lasted right?
