What essential items do you keep in your car?

I'm curious to know what 'essential items' the fine people on these forums keep in their vehicles.
Yes, it's also a gratuitous way for a noob like me to get more posts as I'm not super mechanically inclined and feel I have not much to contribute to this community :bonk:.

I'll start.

Tire pressure gauge
OBD2 bluetooth adapter
Wheel lock key
Jumper cables
Flashlight
Snow brush (during winter)
A few dollars in loose change
Glass cleaner
Paper towels
Pen/pencil
Notepad
Extra pair of shoes
Jacket

And last but not least: HAND SANITIZER!

Edit: Face mask, can't forget that one!

soundman98 04-11-2021 08:16 PM

device charger/charging cables
emergency tools (socket set, screwdrivers, volt meter, pliers, battery cleaner)
self-contained jump-pack
combat first aid kit
emergency water
scotch 33+ electrical tape(works on wounds too!)
random loose change
random towels
tow strap(fits in spare tire)
sun visor for long parking
baseball cap to act cool
sunglasses to be cool
magnetic phone mount
pens
random business cards
headache pills
tire pressure gauge(digital!)
at least 3 flashlights
2' piece of 500MCM wire

Purist 04-11-2021 08:20 PM

In my limited edition BRZ STd Dual Sport daily driver:

OFT and cables

Receipts.

Empty iced coffee bottles

A spray jacket

3 mismatched socks

A pile of student assignments to be graded

A diecast model of a BRZ

Some old Hillclimb programs

Fire extinguisher

Some handouts of nonsensical flowcharts from a conference

Camera mount

An Aux cord that is incompatible with my phone case

Pens

Oh, and if I'm doing a track day I'll throw in a multi tool and a tyre gauge :)

I've tried to be a grown up about my car but after 23 years of car ownership I now embrace my inner slob.

LMAO! Similar to the vast majority of Canadian's I don't own any firearms. I'd simply just use my legs and run :)

Sapphireho 04-11-2021 11:15 PM

Well, I just went out and looked. In the trunk of the twin is a trunk organizer with a old bath towel, 2 wine glasses, one of those umbrellas that folds down to about 6 inches long, and a small micro fiber towel.

In the glove box is registration and proof of insurance, a phone mount I bought that I've never used, a stack of napkins the wife grabbed from somewhere we ate, and some random ticket.

dnieves 04-11-2021 11:27 PM

1 quart synthetic oil
1 bottle car wax
1 bottle detailer
several micro fiber towels
OBD2 wifi scanner
wheel lock key
Spare masks
1 can tire dressing
1 clay bar
USB chargers with micro USB and lightning cables
Pen
Owner's manual
Tire pressure gauge
Reusable Toyota & Subaru shopping bags
Adidas hoodie just in case

Reading the previous entries and realized having some latex gloves is an excellent idea -I wish I had them when I had to change my tire a month ago.

beltax90 04-12-2021 02:14 AM

my carpool lane mannequin of course

p1l0t 04-12-2021 03:15 AM

A six shooter and a flask.

Loaded AND two mags?
Just how bad a situation do you expect to run into?

Having 2 cars I realized the inventory is quite different for each as is the expected dependability and use.

BRZ: hat, glasses, Wheel locks, USB cable for phone, 128Gb USB stick for tunes, spare oil filter & 1L oil, new light use garden gloves, unused clean rag, Sanitizer wipes, optical lens cleaner, Small Swiss pen knife, note pad, 3 Carabineers, hiking boots.

… Now the 15yr Old car: Still has has Snow brush/scrapper, battery booster/tire inflator, booster cables, Vise-grips(why use proper tool when the bolt will break from the rust anyhow), shovel, Multiple unpaired greasy work gloves, Blanket, matches, candles, spare fuses, Windshield washer fluid, metal Traction aids ,winter gloves, tire pressure gauge, 3 way lug wrench, small lug wrench under my seat for late night city encounters, Number of Half filled semi dried-up touch up paint, many bungee cords, Multi tool, garbage bag full of used rags, Phone mount. Box of scratched CD’s, bicycle pump, bike lock/cable, too many reuse bags for groceries, electrical tape, pkg of zip ties, cargo net, umbrella, emergency raincoat, tent pegs, grey Hot Wheel Porsche spider on passenger shelf (My analog G meter) and numerous unidentified objects under the seats.

3 French hens
2 turtle doves
and a partridge in a pear tree

Hopefully, none at all.
But if so, one that requires fewer rounds than are available at the time.

Th3rdSun 04-12-2021 11:27 AM

142 piece DeWalt tool kit,Slime portable 12V tire inflator. I use to keep my 2 ton hydraulic jack, but took it out to save weight, but I might throw it back in.

Those are probably the most important things, everything else from tire pressure gauge,to lug key is pretty much expected.

YamahaR86 04-12-2021 11:34 AM

Aside from the spare tire/scissor jack in the car already
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Phone charger for me and other people (Android + Apple) saved my friend twice
  • Insurance
  • Registration
  • Receipts for warranty items in same pouch, like my battery
  • Recently added a NOCO battery jump starter
  • Jumper cables
  • ZIP Ties
  • Funnel
  • Wheel lug nut key
  • Pen
  • Notepad
  • Moving blanket
  • Sunglasses

The bigger issue is the damned cows!

coastwardpig 04-12-2021 12:49 PM

Wow, thanks for the input everyone!

This thread has motivated me to add the following safety equipment (which are mandatory items in a lot of European countries) to my car:

Fire extinguisher
Traffic cone
Reflective jacket
First aid kit
Rubber/nylon gloves

Who said anything about cows? :D

spike021 04-12-2021 02:44 PM

Hmm.

Glove compartment:

* the subaru books that weigh a ton
* reg and insurance
* multitool (although right now it's in my home because I've been using it while building furniture and stuff at my new place)
* digital tire pressure gauge (one of the best purchases that I've made)
* InitialD First Stage CD album I bought in Japan last year

Rest of car:

* Costco pack of MF towels
* quart of oil
* a jacket/sweater
* a water bottle or two
* small folding camp chair

I have some other random stuff from moving that I haven't cleared out yet.

Plus straw wrappers are everywhere because every time I get boba or some other drink, I open the straw in the car, so the wrapper goes in a cup holder or something, only to get blown around the car because of the windows being open.

You don't pack a spare pair of boots to wear when you go into the dive bar?

:iono:

HKz 04-12-2021 08:57 PM

I carry a little brush in front of my shifter so I can dust off all the nooks and crannies while I'm waiting at the lights lol

Oh no, why I do feel like you have a stock of this on your car.
I keep mine clean, the only that you can find on my car are the tools to fix it in case I encountered any problem while traveling on the road.

In addition to what the OP originally stated:

One Litre bottle of mouthwash, under driver's seat (next to the bottle of window cleaner)

Long white towel to put on dash whilst parked on very hot days.

New blue tarp in original plastic bag (in case of tire changing in the wet or dirt)

Proper sized piece of wood to put under car jack base in muddy or gravel conditions..spread the load (find something at home in advance and test it).

Quality brand or old/used >Cross shaped lug nut wrench< longest available is best (I don't trust what is given by the manufacturer) kept in black plastic bag.

weederr33 04-12-2021 11:59 PM

Bottle of water
Aviators
Individual first aid kit (IFAK)
Tire pressure gauge
OBDII reader
2 pens

harbor freight sells a foldable version that fits into one of the styrofoam cutouts by the spare tire. i've got one of those in my car as well. i've used it a couple times doing winter wheel changes, mostly to make sure that it'll take the force. it works just as good, and doesn't get in the way so much.
