No dash speakers

So I was just checking up on the speaker locations to look into replacing them, and when I popped off the front grill, there was only a tweeter, and a big 'ol hole where the 3.5 normally goes.

This most likely means the tweeters are running as splits from the 6.5's in the doors, and explains the terrible sound quality and lack of amp in the Aus car.

Nardi330 08-13-2012 03:31 AM

yeah i think US cars can upgrade to have speakers there.

i also think JDM cars are the same as ours with only a tweeter on the dash.

Palmy 08-13-2012 03:47 AM

Hope its better news in the GTS

sorry to say, that is the news for GTS.

TMCA has been quoting speakers audio system all along.

Palmy 08-13-2012 03:49 AM

subs in the boot HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!

fuddbutter 08-13-2012 04:02 AM

Can you take a pic of the hole?

and i used to run just a 6.5in mid in the door and tweeters.. well, on the floor..
It won me about 30 trophies..

More crap $2 toyota speakers is not going to make it sound any better.. just more average sound haha

Captain Snooze 08-13-2012 05:06 AM

You can have mine if you want as I don't want a sound system. You will have to wait a while though.

Okay. I will take your non-existent speakers.

JiB 08-13-2012 06:18 AM

Use a flat head to pry it up. It's just cliped in. The dash pad is soft enough to get a screw driver under it without leaving a mark.

proficience 08-13-2012 06:31 AM

Noticed the same here - only tweeters in the dash in the GTS

Nafe 08-13-2012 08:02 AM

Should be nice surprises, it was only ever said that it had 6 speakers.
That would be 2x door, 2x tweeters and 2x rear.

Wasn't sure if Toyota counted tweeters. Now that I think about it, of course they do. It's a simple way to get the number higher.

Nafe 08-13-2012 08:36 AM

And that was supposed to be "no surprises"
Yeah, manufacturers quote separate tweeters as individual speakers.

Perastis 08-13-2012 08:43 AM

There are 8 in the fr-s. According to what the sticker on the car said.

Also they're Pioneer speakers not Toyota. They're not the best but they get to job done for now til it's time for aftermarket :)

In Canada the FR-S is advertised as having a 8 speaker stereo system. so I would assume my car has all the speakers in the dash as well as in the doors and the rear.

I also must say that i am pretty impressed with the quality of sound coming from this car.

Surok 08-13-2012 05:41 PM

To be fair, Toyota did make the car pretty cheap for us Aussies..
Is the wiring still there?

Not from what I could see.

Skorov 08-13-2012 07:00 PM

That's ok! Just more room to work with!
Since I'll be selling my old 6x9s, I'll have some spare cash for new speakers. Probably leave the rear speakers stock, put new stuff in every hole in the front (<--- That's what she said) and fade to front so that you can barely hear the rears.

Nafe 08-13-2012 09:06 PM

Agreed ^^rears aren't important when you arent a rear passenger!! My current car has no rears at all. Fronts and sub is it!!

fuddbutter 08-13-2012 09:30 PM

Fronts and sub is all you need.

rip the rears out, saves weight :)

davey90 08-13-2012 09:32 PM

I'm pretty fresh to car speakers, just making it clear tweeters are high frequency speakers, which acts like a center speaker in a home surround sound system, right?

we only get 2 near the windshield and normal speakers on the doors?

st162celica 08-13-2012 09:32 PM

AHHHH guys ... i love having my rears... Surround sound !!!!

dont even think my 12inch box will fit in the boot :(

Nardi330 08-13-2012 09:44 PM

surround sound only works when you are watching movies. useless for music.....

i agree front splits and sub are all you need. who cares about the rear. and i can't be bothered ripping out the rear trims to take out the pair of tiny OEM paper speakers. it will annoy me more if there is a rattle by pulling trim off then leaving that little bit of extra weight in there.

also is the factory tweeter location any good for SQ?

That's right. Tweeters are high frequency drivers (fancy word for speakers). They are responsible making clicks/air/static type sounds. Not sure about the centre speaker thing though.

Typically, you can get 2 (or more) speaker configuration "types". You can get a 6inch speaker with the tweeter sitting in the middle of the speaker. Or you can get 'Splits' which just means that the tweeter is not attached to the speaker and can be put elsewhere.

Tweeters are small speakers (around an 1") for high range
Mids are the standard speaker size (4-6.5")
And subs are pretty self explanatory.

davey90 08-13-2012 10:05 PM

Cheers guys! :happy0180:

so how many speakers/drivers exist on the car? confused from following the thread.

so from what I have made out is that there are 2 tweeters and standard speakers (splits, right?) on each side? :iono:

2 tweeters in the dash, 2 6.5inch speakers in the doors and 2 4inch speakers in the rear.

6 total.

6 speakers dude:
  • Highs from the 2 x tweeters in the dash (>2Khz)
  • Mid-lows from the 2 x woofers in the doors (>80Hz, <1Khz),
  • Useless indistinct highs from the 2 x woofers in the rear side panels

Sound stage is pretty good for a stock stereo IMO - just missing that 20Hz - 80Hz kick.

I'll probably chuck a monoblocked 10" sub in the boot with custom enclosure when i get the chance

Meant surround sound, not as movies.. Just have sound coming from all corners of the car.

I'm doing the same. 10" works well for that nice, sharp thump you want with Trance and Electro.

ideally the rears should not be noticible for the front driver/passenger. the stock rear location on 86 is bad already and they are using 2 metal bars to secure the speaker which is crap and do nothing good to the SQ.

Each to their own.

all speakers are being done in my car.

86drift 08-13-2012 10:58 PM

This whole rear speaker weight thing has got me thinking. What companies make lightweight speakers and are they any good?

Eg.
Liteair speakers

but then you save 300g and end up with crap speakers :P

the splits i use are not overly heavy, and they sound pretty fantastic.

fuddbutter 08-13-2012 11:45 PM

I would say just removing the rears and putting decent ones up the front would be best, you save weight from the rears and replacement front speakers wouldn't be too heavy.

Surok 08-14-2012 01:23 AM

if its so terrible when i get mine, i will just raid the jaycar catalog and grab some decent speakers in stock sizes and replace them all.

Suffa 08-14-2012 03:56 AM

anyone think you could get away with a couple of 10" shallow subs in the rear space? Looks like there could be enough space and would make for a nice clean install. Prob need abit of fiberglassing though.

If that lil speaker panel pops out might be able to fabricate a panel with room on the 10"

Gir 08-14-2012 04:15 AM

I'm waiting to see what the after market comes up with for the rear speaker. Would love to put an 8-10" in there.
