Scion Drift

Good ol Ken Gush, at least they sent a proffesional to do a behind the scenes. Wonder if he thinks the same thing as me, and says, toyota please dont give us a retarded dumbed down version of the car that you demo! As we all know, all concepts look way better than the actual thing. Why this is, I really dont know. I theorize it has something to do with the actual shapping of the frame, and that the more lines and angles you produce the more expensive it gets. Anybody agree with that? On another topic, Speaking of drifting, I wish Ken would drop that damn cursed 3S-GTE in is TC and just drop a V-8 in it. Poor guy has had the worse luck with mechanical failures. I got to see him in his new TC back in '08, he did did one full round and beat who he drifted agaisnt, then the second time his car broke.. I was like, oh man, wtf?? I was so dissapointed because I heard how good he was and because his car wasnt responding right, he couldnt actually achieve a good drift. It was a sad day for the "Gush".

WingsofWar 06-17-2011 07:14 PM

i like kens sense of speed..his entry speeds are fucking fast. hes got balls going into some of these corners i watched him drive into.

Drifting

Yeah when his car works, he drifts really good, seen it on other videos. I think last year he took a podium finish.

Ken doesn't have a 3s-GTE in his tC, where you been?

They ditched the mechanical problem of a BEAMS motor and swapped the factory 2az back into the tC, per advice from Chris Rado. Now he has no mechanical issues with the motor and makes 760hp vs his old BEAMS motor that use to make only 400.

I'll have to ask him what they plan to do with the tC though once he switches up to an FR-S.

This Reminds me...FD is LIVE today! Time to go stream some video and watch the action...later...

This is the guy that Scion needs talking about the car, not the other guy from Scion. This guy seems down to earth and has his heart in this kind of car. That other guy just comes off as trying too hard to be "hip"

Vice president read off a script. Lol. And rehearsed just to make it sound like he cared about about the car. He is probably dreaming the $$$ that's going to come in. Lol.

Scion Racing Driver Ken Gushi Talks Up The FR-S: Video

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpNjj...layer_embedded

Quote:

With the unveiling of its FR-S Concept back at the 2011 New York Auto Show, Scion showed us that even models intended to be affordable can look quite exotic. Despite still being a concept, most of the FR-S show car’s lines are expected to transfer faithfully to the production 2012 Scion FR-S, possibly Celica in other markets, including its aggressive front end and sweeping fenders.

This latest video features Scion driver Ken Gushi, who is currently piloting a tC coupe in the Formula Drift series. He talks about the new FR-S and its relation to the original Toyota AE86 drift legend.

Enjoy the video below and then click here to see our own exclusive spy video of the production FR-S testing on the notorious Nurburgring circuit in Germany and some of its surrounding streets.

It's funny that he only talks about the looks. It's a damn remote control toy car! It does look great though, too bad it will not look like that when it is finally released. :(

He's keeping it more legit than most anyone else.

Half the 240 wagon has gone V-8....at least he still reps a Japanese L4. I would say his 'turd cutter' is a more "legit" drift car than some bastardized S13/14 with an LS1 in it.

You can't even call it a turd cutter...that car is seriously amazing.

BS. There are way more "bastardized" cars drifted by grassroots drifters, than any tc with a drivetrain conversion. At least those guys are in it for the sport, not the spirit of the engine and chassis combo. I think it is ingenious to engine swap, especially with one as cheap, reliable and powerful as an LSX. Why keep the POS engine in the 240sx anyway? These cars require way more HP that those powerplants were engineered in mind. So them swapping and making the car boring for you isn't legit? Speak for yourself. If that was the case none of the GT classes would be running butanol, diesel and all that jazz. When you show me at least one tc that isnt sponsored drifting, thats when Ill respect it as a legit drift car. Right now its a poser, trying to do something it was never designed to do.

I agree, but calling a car that takes 15-20 grand in drivetrain mods just to have the capability to drift "legit" is stepping over the line.

It don't make it a "Turd Cutter" just because it wasn't born with the power turning the rear wheels. The car is serious business for sure.

Agreed, the V8 band wagon is getting a little old.... I dont mind if a V8 wins, but I think it kind of takes the fun out of Formula D when every other car has a V8 in it.... D1GP can compete with our V8 cars. I think it is a lack of creativity not that the engines these cars come with cant compete with the V8's.

KyShro 06-27-2011 02:21 AM

Also, look at Ueo and Yoshioka... their old AE86's could STILL compete with Formula D and they stuck with their 4ag's. Yoshioka beat up on the V8 guys at Vegas with his AE86 and won that round. Driver skill + set up is more important.

It is, it just was never supposed to drift. No doubt tCs are fast cars. But they're not "legit" at all, for a sport that requires a certain chassis configuration which the tC doesnt have factory.

You know what would've been cool? If they were the only ones in FD to drift FWD.

BTW, speaking of unorthodox drift cars, I came across a nice MR2 recently. I wonder how hard that would be to drift.

ichitaka05 06-27-2011 10:42 PM

You should see D1SL restriction is a bitch!

Restrictions in the category are that:
  • The vehicle must retain the original chassis/body—only stock body constructed from a vehicle manufacturer is allowed.
    • No tube frame vehicles or tube frame chassis extensions are permissible unless part of the OEM structure
    • Space frame chassis are not permitted, additional triangulation and bracing of suspension turret/mounting points is allowed so long as the car vehicle contains its original monocoque chassis.
    • Vehicles must retain their original VIN in its OEM position as well as the OEM chassis plate where applicable -- VIN must not be altered, clearly visible and readable.
    • Convertible vehicles must have a hard top installed and a roll cage which will be effective in the event of a vehicle rolling onto its roof. The hard top must be securely fastened to the body.
    • The vehicles appearance must be similar to that of the original vehicle.
  • Slick Tires (S-Tires) were prohibited after the first season as they are not road legal, after Nobuteru Taniguchi used them to win the championship in 2001. The series now only permits commercially available road tires approved by the organization.
  • Catalytic converters must be installed to keep the vehicle to the maximum noise limit at race circuits.
  • Spoilers must stay within the width of the vehicle.
  • Brakes must be stock dimensions; no swaps from other models of same make are allowed.
  • Vehicles must retain OEM parts (ac/navigation/heater)
  • A functioning car audio system must be in place.
  • A 6 point roll cage with 4 point harness must be in place (same as that of D1GP).
  • Restriction of engine swaps from other model into other model, as S15 Silvia Spec-S to Spec-R specification (SR20DE→SR20DET) may be permitted but a RB26DETT into an HR32 Skyline GTS-t is not unless the model is a BNR32, nor even is converting an AE85 to AE86 is permitted. Engines from other manufacturer's car (e.g. Darren McNamara's SR20DET powered AE86) are not permitted as well. A bolt on turbocharger or supercharger is permitted, the engine in the car can be determined by the VIN plate
They're very strict... but again that's Street Legal, so maybe that's why

With one of the 4AGE cars is the one that went through like ten bottles of nitrous per run?

I actually meant to say 'which'? I don't follow pro drifting but I remember seeing a run with a Corolla riding the ass of a Viper the whole run and I was like 'ZOMGWTFBBQ!?' and the announcers said something that he empties a bottle or two of nitrous each run, and I was like 'nice...' heh.

That red coupe he was driving in Formula D was for sale for $36,000! That thing was a steal because it was valued at $90,000 (all the parts + car) :eyebulge:

I was talking bout Nitrous. They quick way to make HP, but it's not cheap way to make HP.

Maybe not in his application, but for street use and drag use, it's the best $/hp mod out there.

50 shot is pretty safe on anything, properly installed. That Corolla was probably like 300+ shot in two or three stages. It was insane.

Geez, not again. Didn't you already read the part about the Toyota Zelas(aka Scion tC) being AWD overseas?

Seriously, stop talking about this subject over and over. :offtopic: Coverting an AWD car to RWD is legitimate. And it's a race car, they probably spent a couple thousand on the conversion and then spent $15k on beefing up the suspension and custom suspension/drivetrain parts! :mad0260:

I think youve been misinformed, the chassis itself is from an AWD car, but both Zelas and tC are FWD. It still takes 10-20g to convert to RWD.

By legit, I meant that the car was designed with RWD at it's inception. Obviously its not. It's like seeing the vid below and saying that civics are "legit" drift cars.
[u2b]NgS93jelnzo[/u2b]
If youd like us to stop talking about it, just stop bringing it up :)

OldSkoolToys 07-02-2011 06:05 PM

I would slide that ass all day....nice civic!

Of course, if I were at Ebisu I'd ride anything on the track available, including a bicycle....Chiba-san it up!:bellyroll:

I think your problem is that you're wayy to caught up in some fanciful "legit" world of drifting. Street drifting (And its drifters) were never about what was 'legit', or proper, or correct....exact opposite. The fact is, if the car can drift, its a legit drift car....

So some guy spends a fortune doing a FWD -> RWD conversion...ok, that's fine. He any good though? Got the skills to back up that fat wallet? Did he do it to prove a point, or because that's his style and his dream?
Hell the only reason I rag on Honda's is because they were all FWD (S2K obviously not included). If the old EG and EK hatch civics were RWD, the integgy was RWD, etc., they'd be some of my favorite cars.
