86 Wheel Fitment Beginner Help

So this is my first time dealing with anything wheel fitment related, and I was just curious to see if this setup would work? Is there anything specific I should know about?

Wheels are 18x9.5 +38mm, and the tires are 255/35ZR18, and I'm getting Tein Street Basis Zs for coilovers.

Thanks in advance guys :D

I'm far from a fitment guru, but I was going to mention that it 18x9.5 wheels seems a bit excessive for these cars.

Cephas 10-27-2020 11:02 AM

SUUUUPER excessive, but some people just want the look. :iono:

Welcome to the forum @starxv! No disrespect intended, but this kind of performance facade seems like the automotive equivalent of lip syncing.
Like if Milli Vanilli decided to build a sports car. :iono:

Yes, it will fit.

starxv 10-27-2020 02:49 PM

What would your guys' preferred choice of fitment be? I appreciate the advice though I don't really want to weigh down the car LOL

Cephas 10-27-2020 02:51 PM

Big wheels are almost always heavier, and it's unlikely you'll need a tire much wider than stock to get any additional corner grip. A 17x8 (ish) with a 225 (ish) seems to be enough for most folks. But it really depends on what you're trying to do. Achieving an aesthetic sometimes comes at the cost of comfort or performance, in some ways.

Hmmm might go with 18x8? I still want a close to flush look without sacrificing too much out of weight or performance though..

It's all about your priorities. Nothing wrong with sacrificing performance for looks as long as you are making an informed decision and know the tradeoffs. If you don't plan to race or track the car, do what you like. There's plenty of NA Rocket Bunny widebodys in my area. :D

I think that'd achieve your goal, without making you hate life every time you drive the car. And you won't have to go too extreme with the offset to get flush that way. The coilovers (or hell just some springs) will take care of the rest.

So the setup would be 18x8 +35mm and 225/35 most likely rn. How do I know how low to set the coilovers or are they un-adjustable?

Unless you have some to a lot of experience setting up suspensions (or have a good friend who does) I recommend Bilstein B6s and springs of your choice to achieve the ride height you want.

If you get super adjustable coilovers without knowing how to tune them, you'll wind up having to either ask someone else for settings that work for THEM or chasing a rabbit down a hole trying to find something that works for you.

This! Just go with what's important to you. If you are just using the car as a daily driver, go with whatever wheels you feel look good and fits your budget. 17x8 will drive nicer than 18x9.5 but to some won't look as nice. You will have to decide which is more important to you. If you only drive to and from work or school or whatever you do daily the performance potential will matter less than how the car looks to many people.

Coilovers will come with recomended settings. Start with that and see how you like them. Want to go lower after a few weeks? You can. Find the ride is too hard? Dial it back a few clicks and see if that is better. There is nothing complicated about it. If you wanted to set it up for the best lap time then that is a bit different. But in all honesty not that different, its still just trial and error.

In summary, take forum opinions with a grain of salt, their goals will be different to yours.

17x8 +35 with 225/45/17's will be better for handling/performance. If you're after performance, there are FAR better budget options for suspension than the Flex Z as well. All depends on what you want most.
