Pay-per-mile insurance is the hidden gem of auto insurance
 

I'm guessing the vast majority of you (as well as people in general) are on fixed rate insurance.

However, for low-mileage drivers like myself, discovering pay-per-mile insurance was great for the wallet. With Metromile (living in Seattle), I pay a monthly base rate of $24, plus 3.3 cents per mile for my 2014 Scion FR-S. I drive less than 100 miles per month. If you're running the calculations, that comes out to $327.60 per year max.

That's far cheaper than any other insurer for my driving habits. Just a heads up for those not aware of pay-per-mile insurance.

I commute 70 miles round trip every day rn, so I don't think that'd be ideal XD

Also, for those on brick and mortar insurance companies like geico, progressive, and with a good driving record, it's definitely worth looking into some smaller, more regional companies. I know in the pnw, wawaneesa is a good one.

I tried one of those dongles. Jeebus, only a brain-dead soul-less zombie could enjoy what they called "normal" driving.

I did my research before trying. Some of the saintly drivers I talked to had issues "being aggressive" according to the dongle, so knew it wasn't worth my time.

I guess the only real question is how are they to work with if you do have to file a claim?

I will say,that price would be great for me,because that's about $40 cheaper than I pay for half a year.

Even if you drive the speed limit all the time just cornering and braking will screw you. One of the guys I worked with a few years ago was part of a study by his ins. company and after 30 days with the dongle they dropped him. He only had 3 minor speeding infractions but a few days of driving in NYC with hard braking and tight corners put him over the companies self imposed limits. He actually had to park his car for a few weeks before he was able to get new insurance and it had to be "high risk" because his original co. listed why they dropped him so his rates went up 800% and took 4 years to come back down to only being 200% higher than they were before the study.

Mine appears to be lower with Progressive, and I don't need to worry about a bigger bill after a long trip.

With the coverages i picked, nobody beatS USAA. I'll write it again, nobody beats USAA.

I had metromile for a few years, but after I turned 25 and combined some discounts, my rates through regular insurance ended up being cheaper.

You can’t drive carefully for three months. I have done it on 4 cars. Saved between 8-15% on each car. The main thing they look for is hard acceleration, hard braking and driving after midnight. I was still doing 75mph on the highway and got good discounts.

i drive carefully, but i don't agree with the blind limit system that such devices impose.

"sure, i stopped in time to save the kid that ran out into the street because i pay attention while driving, but now it doubled my insurance premium!"

it'd be one thing if there were some recourse to explain one's actions in a scenario, but being subjected to a limit that i don't exactly know where it is until i hit it is best reserved for gambling tables.

The dongle I drove beeped when you hit a limit. If you drove like a hyper-miler Prius driver it was happy. I guess I should not be surprised that my sister leaves hand-prints in the door handle when she rides with me.

That's what screwed my friend, stopping for pedestrians and making "radical" moves to avoid problems. The dongle doesn't know why you're doing things that actually make you a safer driver.

Same here using USAA because my father is a veteran and they've been really good to my family. I've had the best rates from them and have yet to find a competitor with the same coverage and cost right now.
