SR20 swap from HPA

That is interesting and different.

Irace86.2.0 08-28-2020 04:06 PM

The SR20 or 3SGE are probably better for RHD and K20/24 is better for LHD because of the steering rack.

Drifter X 08-28-2020 04:09 PM

As a previous SR20DET owner, I seriously think this engine on our platform is the one people should be more of. I'd pay for this.

I want this SR24VE build in my car!

e1_griego 08-28-2020 04:21 PM

SR20VET would be fantastic. Maybe go swipe a credit card at Mazworx...

I have an S13 with a built DET and I think I'd want a little bit more sophistication in my BRZ.

Next question... How many engines do you have sitting in your garage?

Just a k20 type s short block and the sr20vet.

One thing that seems weird about the sr's is they don't hold very much oil its like 3.5 quarts

The head off the k20 is on the k24 in my brz and the sr20vet head was going on the det in my samurai.

Not on this forum much, huh? It has been in the top 5 threads in the Engine Swap category for a while...

That does seem low. Maybe packaging limited the size. I wonder if that can be a problem for cooling or oil pressure during cornering.

Pretty much every SR has a high capacity pan: Greddy, Tomei, ARC, etc. They still only hold about 4.5 quarts though.

Takumi788 09-04-2020 12:47 PM

As a previous SR powered 240 owner I have dreamed about this swap ever since I bought my FRS. Even contacted Sikky and Wiring Specialties about it in 2014. I have been following this build and cannot wait to see them race it.

HPA is running a dry sump to remedy that. As well as to aid with subframe clearance.

Not only does he have a K powered BRZ, but it's run by the OEM ECM. It's an impressive build thread.

HPA has always been a great channel but this build really has me checking for new videos often. Not only is it a crazy swap, but it is a crazy swap that is designed to be functional in a race car. It doesn't get better.

That was a new motor correct??

Takumi788 10-03-2020 11:29 AM

Speed academy blew up their evo engine and, now hp. These Youtube builds are tough in 2020. Fingers crossed for Rob Dahm. I hope these guys get this figured out. This is my favorite build to follow at the moment.

Yes, it was fully built and then some. They think the head lifted, so the boost pressurized the coolant system, which is why it was shooting from the overflow tank. I don’t know if this is a failure to torque down the head enough, or a limitation with the design like maybe they needed to drill and tap for larger bolts or something.

I think Rob Dahm already blew his up last year. Had a ton Al shaving everywhere but seems to have everything worked out now. Dustin Williams took his BRZ drifting with a used turbo kit, random misfires, no oil cooler and running 0w20 and blew it up after two track days.lol BUT I think that one was for the views.

IDK who Dustin Williams is but I am certainly not interested in watching his stuff if he is that dumb. It is very easy to see who is out there for likes and who is out there to teach. Thats why HPA is awesome.

x808drifter 10-11-2020 10:15 AM

Been following Rob before he even had a YT channel, back when he was just on RX7club.com

Rob's build had a dumb dumb moment. Aluminum shavings in the intercooler from cutting.

No biggy. (thankfully)
That's one of the things I love about his channel. He doesn't shy away from showing his mistakes.
Replaced the seals in the engine and now the car is making 1200+hp
Can't wait to see that thing race. The interior is finally going in.

Looking forward to the stupid 6 rotor project.

Bad Obsession Motorsport is another good one.

Irace86.2.0 10-11-2020 11:18 PM

Rob Damn has admitted that he gets more views when he makes mistakes, so he is incentivized to be transparent.

I love his "i dont know what i am doing, but I can learn anything" approach. So many people are so concerned about what other people think that they are afraid to learn and possibly fail. So they dont even try.

I also find him to be refreshingly creative. It is clear that he hasn't been in motorsport for very long so all of his ideas are just from his head. He isn't copying anyone else or buying parts from a catalog. Not like he could buy off the shelf parts anyway, but just saying. He doesn't care how or what anyone else is doing. He is building his car the way he wants for him.

gtpvette 10-12-2020 03:19 PM

Looks expensive.....

Irace86.2.0 10-12-2020 08:35 PM

The thing that sucks is this could have been avoided if they connected up the EGT system, but they ran out of time. Expensive mistake “if only”.

Icecreamtruk 10-13-2020 12:17 PM

HPA is awesome, but damn his aussie accent is strong! It took me a while to figure out what a "heed gesket" was.

They are in New Zealand, that's a Kiwi accent, even we have trouble understanding :)
