2012 Manual GT86 Knocking at idle

https://youtu.be/2ZHH2tbWG8k

Have been experiencing a knocking sound when the engine is warm and idling, as soon as i build revs and start driving the noise will dissapear until i let it idle again, if it's knocking when i turn the engine off it will knock on start up like shown in the video. Have been advised it could be a few things but after neither resolving the issue i'm not sure what it could be, after changing an oil control valve the rev hunting has seemed to stop however the knock is still there, ive been told that toyota say these often go in pairs but i bought only one to test, have also read through the CEL/SL and knocking thread as my CEL and SL have popped up a couple times if i leave it to knock (sat in traffic) but haven't come to a conclusion of what my issue is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Can u post a longer video that would help, also pop your hood and record around the engine bay. Have someone give a few revs.

Don't have a video of revs yet but the noise does not get louder when building revs, it'll disappear when oil pressure builds.

What were the CEL codes?

P0301 Cylinder 1 misfire

Did you try putting in new spark plugs? If that doesn't work I would switch your coil packs around and see if the cylinder that's misfiring follows it.

Could also try some injector cleaner.. and worse case replacing the injectors

Replaced the coilpack and don't believe i have seen the CEL light since, just the knock, haven't tried changing spark plugs as i believe that's quite a big job. Have also done 2 oil changes since having the problem. Not sure if it's just a placebo but the noise seemed to change when i swapped one of the oil control valves, so believe it could be a VVT issue, by ear it sounds like the knock is coming from the left side of the engine

Well if you replaced the coilpack than you had access to the spark plug... It's really not that big of a job and it's the most likely cause. When was the last time your spark plugs have been changed?

If you have a cyclinder that is not firing or misfiring than you are essentially running on 3 cyclinders which is out of balance and out of timing and likely the cause of the knocking/shaking. I would figure out why cyclinder 1 is not firing. I would start with spark plugs because they are cheap. So is fuel injector cleaner. Next up after that is coil packs or fuel injectors. Are you sure it was the right cyclinder you replaced the coilpack on? I mean it's either air, fuel, or spark if it's not firing. (well could be no compression but then you are really screwed so lets just hope not).

Thought they were a pain to get to, how do you find is the best way to getting to them? and didn't really think of them being an issue as the car has just hit 30k miles

CEL hasn't come on for over a month and since i changed the coilpack so if it was still misfiring i would've thought it would come back on, no more lumpiness and rev hunting, theres definitely no lack in power when i am driving but yes i understand where you're coming from about it being out of time essentially causing something to knock

Wait so it is knocking now with no CEL?

Yeah intermittent knocking at idle, no engine light, and only when warm
