Short Shifter

I keep searching all around for a short throw and I can not seem to find one, does anyone have any info? I bought the Perrin rubber bushing thing but Id like to get something better like a TWM or a TRD if it was available. Any help would be great.

sbxjap 08-19-2012 10:16 AM

I don't think one is out yet. I've been looking since its usually an easy first mod.

Haven't seen one yet, but I ordered a Perrin shifter bushing in a groupbuy to help relieve that excess slack. Haven't arrived yet.

I do remember reading B&M asking a forum member to borrow their car for measurements and photos though, so someone is at least working on it.

Wonder what's different between our black ones and their red ones :X
although i vaguely recall some discussion about this before lol

I think Cobb is making one..

Throw is pretty short already isn't it? Any shorter and you have a toggle switch. :D

I was about to say, how much shorter could you possibly ask? Most short throw kits, at best, make other cars feel like if not quite as good as this one.

wheelhaus 08-20-2012 04:55 AM

toggle switch, lol

Short throw with a slightly longer shifter rod could be good. End up with close to stock throw but a bit higher and closer to the wheel.

I was thinking about this last night while driving some back roads, how nice the shifter is already.

I would definitely do some stiffer shifter bushings, but I would be afraid a new shifter might mess up the already good factory feel.

Propaganda 08-20-2012 10:43 AM

The shifter feels about what my tc was with the TRD short shifter, but a bit smoother. Actually, the throw might be a tad bit longer. I would prefer to keep the stock height, actually.

Some of my friends were shocked when they found out I had a short shifter, and asked why it was so high still. I liked it at the stock height- never had to "find" the shifter or really move my arm too far. A friend had one on an integra and damn that was tiny. No joke, you had to move your hand about a foot and a half to get to the shifter. It was barely higher than the shifter surround. Shifting took so long in that car because of that.

+1

I had a TRD one on my tc and that improved the feel. I knew someone with an early 2000 mustang that had a B&M shifter and it was so stiff, chunky, and took away the feel. It just felt like you were moving a metal stick around a vat of almost dry cement, bumping it into metal gates. It also made reverse harder to engage.

Lonewolf 08-20-2012 08:56 PM

You might also want to try TWM...they had something in the works last I heard...

canu_50 08-23-2012 09:09 AM

Yesterday i went to BPS, they are located in Napierville, Quebec.

We took out my shifter and took some measurement and the prototype should be ready next week.

They are also changing the rubber bushing at the bottom of the shifter(black part in picture) to put a polyurethane bushing.

Everything is CNC and will be black anodized. I really can't wait to try it and give you feedback. Keep in mind i am tracking the car so i do want the best, in that case i will propably change the shift knob for one of theirs wich is heavier and will make shifting easier, acting as a counter weight.

p.s you can also see one of their shifter on top.

One last thing, we will not play with the shifter length but reduce the throw only, since the shifter position sits almost perfectly!

lol we use to find heaps of this "style" the most annoying one is the sw20's with toggle switch shifters, it was like you had to reach into the leather boot to find the shifter lol. i hated then so so much because it made shifting a hit or miss,
though the best mod for the sw20 shifter was when someone came up with ferrari style gates for the sw20, a nice brushed alloy shifter plate went over the boot area, then there is no guessing if thats the right gate/gear

RallySport Direct 08-24-2012 08:23 PM

I'm hoping that Cobb releases an adjustable short shifter. It would be nice to be able to adjust the throw and height.

Short throw

Oh boy my nads are tingling thinking about it! I installed the Perrin bushing and it's ok but something a little tighter w a weighted knob sounds great.

canu_50 09-06-2012 02:05 PM

I am currently a prototype short shifter, i have it since saturday last week.

I love it, it's less vague, the guys has been able to take out 25% of the throw reduction. With the redline transmission oil (mt-90) it doesn't have that notchy feeling anymore, and it's a lot more direct.

They are looking to make the production this week.

civicdrivr 09-06-2012 02:25 PM

Can't wait. Id love for the throws to match, or better, my CL-S shifter.

Same. I just wish the production part kept the silver lockring.

alot of the shifter feel is from the fluid from the factory vs the options out there...check the forum

The shifter itself is steel and will be black zinc coated. The reverse lockout piece is aluminum (one piece fully CNC machined). We offer the reverse lockout piece either in the raw aluminum finish like the pictures on the site, or in an anodized black finish.
