I WAS REMOVING THE RED TINTS I DID FOR MY TAILS USING PAINT REMOVER AND THIS IS WHAT HAPPENED.....THE WHITE STUFF IS THE LINT THATS LEFT OVER IS THERE ANYWAY I CAN REMOVE THIS.....SHOULD I TRY GOO GONE OR MY TAILS ARE GONE....

Mr.Jay 08-07-2012 10:57 PM

should of used good gone in the 1st place. When I had red tints on my car (done by using VHT Red) Goo Gone was able to remove the tint and leave the tails fine tho it should be noted that I didn't spray on that heavy.

You should try goo gone anyways might as well now and sorry to hear about it... makes me 2nd guess myself and doing the red tails again

calis5nest 08-07-2012 11:00 PM

No idea sorry dude may I ask why you took off the tint in the first place?

ArKiTeCkT 08-07-2012 11:03 PM

^ I over sprayed.......ill try goo gone

WiKKiD 08-07-2012 11:12 PM

Wow wanna see how this turns out for you

digital_assassin 08-07-2012 11:14 PM

Whoa. Good luck with that.

Subie 08-07-2012 11:24 PM

Worst-case you may end up needing to buff that off and perhaps follow-up with a 3M headlight restoration kit if the taillights don't look that great afterwards.

Hamza7 08-07-2012 11:28 PM

Don't worry it'll come off I promise you, just do it the right way now. Order yourself some plastic razor blades and stoner's tarminator, if you have a heat gun that will help too.

Spray the tarminator on the lens, wait 5 minutes for it to dwell, heat up a bit with the heat gun (keep it a safe distance away, work in a very small area)

Use the plastic razor blades so scrap the crap off the lens. I am wondering, this is the adhesive stuff left behind right?

Hamza7 08-07-2012 11:46 PM

Ohh Shit your in Toronto, PM me and come by my place tomorrow. I'm home all day working on another FR-S so I can help you out (No Charge)

Reflections 08-08-2012 12:31 AM

But I made your rear tails look so shiny! :( Hamza should take care of you.

Hey hey hey, it takes a privileged person to do these FR-S/BRZ's...I rather detail these then your ugly lambo's...or maybe not

I'll see your Friday when we tag team that Porsche.

Looks like the paint remover(lacquer thinner?) melted the plastic and then the cloth stuck to it! You may be able to polish it out?

I wouldn't use lacquer thinner anywhere near a car except maybe to thin touch up paint?

ArKiTeCkT 08-09-2012 03:16 PM

THE VERDICT

^ Thats exactly what happened. I went to Hamza's place to try and fix it(no charge) but no luck. He did however manage to fix the other tail light which had a bit of this stuff and he polished it out for me. Lesson learned dont mess around with chemicals. This lesson cost me $300, had to purchase a new tail light. :mad0260::mad0260:.

Have you thought about trying a headlight restoration kit? I've used one before on my Acura and the headlights went to looking brand spanking new. I'm not sure how well it will work in your situation but the process should work.

Essentially, the kit comes with multiple grades of sandpaper, and you work your way up and then polish it smooth with a drill. You may have to do a lot of sanding to fix that but in the end I'm pretty sure it'll work.

Good luck

That shit is in the plastic now. This is what happened with my rear license plate light covers. Previous owner painted them red and I used paint remover to take it off. It ruined the lens plastic.

Hope you're down with buying a new tail light. Sorry bro.

sdshores08 08-09-2012 04:11 PM

That's a bummer. On the plus side, the new one won't have any condensation issues, haha. And that's awesome he helped you out for free

And make sure there is no ventilation at all. You don't want the fumes to get away from you!

Aznek 08-09-2012 10:58 PM

Hoping someone does this to their BRZ headlights... so I can buy em!

ArKiTeCkT 08-10-2012 12:31 AM

Jidonsu 08-10-2012 12:34 AM

Seriously. Wet sand it.

Hamza7 08-10-2012 07:10 PM

I did wet sand them for the owner. That how the other one came out perfectly but the first one was a lot of work. He didn't want to spend the time to do it but I guess he can do it in small portions and get the original one's perfect.

FRSCoupe 08-11-2012 03:58 AM

paint remover / lacquer thinner will melt and craze plastic.. learnt from building model kits as a child

David-Fermani.com 08-11-2012 01:26 PM

If you ended up sanding them>>

Then why did you offer different advice at 1st stating that it was "the right way"??

:iono:

Your right David

I misunderstood what happened, I thought is was adhesive residue that OP had difficulty removing which is why I suggested what I did in my first reply to this thread. After I assessed the lights in person. I realized they needed to be wet sanded

digital_assassin 08-11-2012 02:35 PM

skatery1989 08-11-2012 04:27 PM

My buddy's lights did that. We used rubbing compound then waxed them turned out like new

digital_assassin 08-11-2012 06:27 PM

What the hell happened? This thread was getting interesting and then it was edited.

I'm thinking that it was self edited.... if so, good on Hamza for realizing he overstepped things in this response.....

digital_assassin 08-11-2012 07:39 PM

I read it and was like whoa and then LOL'd. I figured the mods would get in and lock it down. Seems like the detailed on here don't get along with Hamza or something. Drama

wbradley 08-11-2012 07:59 PM

I'd wet sand with 2000+ then use Novus to polish.

Novus 3 coarse polish
Novus 2 fine polish

I have all 3 Novus compounds and I'll gladly give u some for free if you supply small containers.PM
me.

Plan B some morotcycle shops carry it (Harley @ Yonge 7), and Playdium Store on Ronson Rd has it in their parts dept.

digital_assassin 08-11-2012 10:59 PM

I may be the only person on the face of this planet that actually got to read it.

RRnold 08-11-2012 11:09 PM

Ouch dude!! Paint thinner on plastic is no bueno. Hopefully the detailer guys can help you out but I too would recommend wet sanding it then try buffing it.

Hopefully you didn't get high with the chemical reaction from the thinner and the plastic.

Juanito08 08-11-2012 11:21 PM

Ill give you $20 for both of them :) lol
