License plate rubbing on Trunk
Anyone else noticing the rear license plate rubbing on the trunk, causing scuffs to the clear coat? My guess is since our trunks only use 2 bolts for mounting. I'm not using a frame on the plate, but I'm curious to hear if anyone who is using a frame if they're getting scuffs too. Also, in general, what are you guys doing to help prevent this?
Here's a pic of what I'm talking about. You can see the scuffs at the top right and lower left. Here's another |
There are quite a few members here that are having the same issue.

The only thing I can suggest is some kind of foam tape that you can adhere to the back of the plate. Thanks for the heads up, I'll have to guard against this when I get my car.
|
I used 3m foam tape and applied it the backside edges of my license plate. This way you dont ever have to worry about marks or rattling. Plus the adhesive is on the plate in case you want to change something later.

Also, is the adhesive on both sides of the foam or just one side? |
It is one sided and it can be found at any car parts store. The brand I got was 3M since it looked more durable.

I dont sorry. It is a very stocked item with varying lengths for various applications.

License plate frame I purchased came with nearly 1/2" spacers/standoffs for the mounts. Y'all might wanna look into that.

If the foam is making good contact with the trunk, wouldn't dirt not get between the two, regardless if it was on attached on the trunk or plate? Quote:

Go to Michaels craft store. They have thin foam sheets for $.85, cut to fit and mount on back of license plate, and problem solved.

Sorry - misread your post. Dirt will get between the two, unless that business is clamped or bolted down. So that being the case, you want that space to involve something other than your paint. |

3m tape is the way to go, it will not hurt the paint. It is the same things toyota uses to attach its lip kits and emblems. They sell it at autozone.

This is what I am going to use when my plates come in. (Frost King E/O 5/16" x 1/4" x 17 ft EPDM Rubber Foam). EPDM rubber for long life, "D" profile for for flex, and strong adhesive backing. going to cut a few strips and attach them to either the plates or the car (haven't decided yet). Great thing about this product, you can get them at any home improvement sotres, and you get a lot for the price!

I assume this is true for the FR-S guys, but my BRZ came with 2 black foam pads taped to the trunk below the 2 plate mount holes. Nice, but not think enough to ensure no plate-on-trunk contact, so I just added another layer of foam tape to those. The other thing I like to do is seal my plate with contact paper (available at most any craft or office supply store). Tones down the plate shininess a bit, which I like, and helps keep the plate looking new and not rusting/weathering over time.

I put these on the back of my plate, no rattles or issues so far.

I taped a wad of duct tape to the bottom of my license plate and have a couple of rubber washers under the bolts.
|
You can also use the felt side of velcro on the bottom of the license plate, cuts down on the rubbing and rattling.
|
I just put my plates on top of the paper dealer plate. Don't know if it helps, but it beats metal against the paint.
|
I put electric tape around the edges ....seems to be effective
