Round 2: GR Inspired Hakone 86
Welp.... I finally caved.
I've been on this forum for years now, since around the beginning. Had a 2013 FRS that had some decent stuff to it. Still N/A, but Todoroki fenders, 18" Mag Blue TEs, Leg Sport duckbill, Tomei stuff etc etc. https://live.staticflickr.com/7502/1...37d105c4_b.jpg Opted to get rid of that and move to a 2016 STI. The car was obviously quicker, more practical, and it was a lot of fun for very little money, with regards to modifying. Got to drive events at Willow Springs, Autoclub, Laguna Seca, and more. https://live.staticflickr.com/4440/3...b8caf33e_b.jpg After that, I moved back to AZ for a career change and wanted to focus on that. So I sold the STI and got a 2019 Crosstrek. Didn't do anything with it. Just drove from A to B every day. Good little car. But I've been sitting for a while wanting something else. I got a 240sx in August of last year that I started working on and after a couple months, I quickly remember why I always said I never wanted another one. Constantly spending time and money on the thing, I just got burnt out. So I sold it a little over a month ago. Then I was continuing the debate in my head between an ND, a CTR, or another 86/BRZ. Kind of an odd cross comparison, I know, but I liked them all for different things. The lack of practicality was the big negative for the ND. The markup people are STILL asking for on CTRs was a turn off. The only thing about the 86 was that I already owned one and kind of wanted a change. Nobody is making anything right now though, and I don't see anything promising coming in the near future. So I decided to finally cave in. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6f4da95b_b.jpg 2020 Hakone 86. I fell in love with the color when I saw the press release. Wasn't a fan of the interior, but it's better in person than in photos. Still not my absolute favorite, but I can't see the tan when I'm sitting in it and driving it, so who cares? lol Anyways, when the world finally calms back down, I'll start playing with this thing again at events and such. No drifting. Just HPDE stuff. Simple suspension, wheels/tires, and so on. Nothing crazy or that hasn't already been done. Looking forward to enjoying driving again though. It's been too long. |

Welcome back! It is such a special package, I would try keeping its look as it is while modifying.

That colour is amazing, really like it. Im tempted to go some sort of green on my BRZ when I get it repainted.

The color pops so good in the light. I feel like Toyota had a bit of a missed opportunity with all the photos they took when they announced the car. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c3e140d6_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...aa3bbc23_b.jpg |

Would also really like to do a leg sport duckbill again, but it doesn’t cover the OEM wing holes, so I’d have to have paint and body work done on the trunk which idk if I really want to do. |
Minor update but I'm so hyped right now.
So a few years back, when I first saw the GR lip for the Kouki 86, I knew that's what I wanted if I ever got another 86. https://i.imgur.com/TaIcI7g.jpg I'm a huge fan of the way it looks. Problem is it's soooo difficult to find somebody who can source it. Well, I went through a couple contacts I've met and known over the years who are now in Japan and they were able to put in an inquiry to see if they could get it. Good news: THEY CAN! Bad news: Direct from Toyota, the full lip is about $1,600 before shipping costs LUCKILY, I was able to find a used one on Yahoo Japan. There were 24 bids, price was only at $120 when I placed my bid. My max bid was set at $700, expecting the auction to go pretty high. To my surprise, I won the action... for $286! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9e79e8c0_b.jpg Shipping to the warehouse in JP then to the US will run about $300 or so, so all in all, I'm in about $600. The side pieces and hardware I already have a quote for direct from Toyota JP for $200 shipped, so it seems as though as I was able to score one of these for about $800 total, which is less than half the price of buying and shipping a brand new one. I do have the full parts list between hardware, the lip, and side pieces though after a bunch of research. So if anybody is also looking to pick up a GR lip for their Kouki 86, I can provide those numbers. |

Lucky ! Can't wait to see it installed :D

Oof best color and best lip in my opinion for the Kouki front end. I have your old set of mag blue TE37SLs lol. Can't wait to see what wheels you decide to go with on this build!
|
Having decided on the 86 - awesome color choice by the way!!! Being on this side of the decision if you could have picked up a CTR at a reasonable price do you think you would have still come back to the 86 regardless? Only wondering because I am thinking the same right now...
|
Rwd vs fwd. After having driven both I vote for the GT86.
The CTR will get you a lot of tickets and the 86 will be fun to drive at the limit. |

You know you want to 2JZ swap that thing and put a giant wing in the back :happyanim: |

However, there's no denying that the CTR would make the better *all around* car. To this date, the 2016 STI I had was definitely the best all around car I've owned, and the CTR has been universally said to have a nicer interior and ride quality, with more space. Quote:
I'd say both are fun (albeit for different reasons) to drive at the limit.. And I'm pretty confident 86/BRZ owners have far more tickets than CTR owners lol |
what are the tyre and wheel spec on your old 86? looks real nice

Leave the wing. Keep it stock or mods that are reverseable. I think this car might hold value a bit more. BTW how can you hate the interior. Love the tan color [emoji3]

The interior is ok, but I suppose it's an acquired test. I've never been the biggest fan of tan interiors. Then again, I'm not even a giant fan of leather. If it were up to me, the entire entire would be black/gray with cloth/alcantara. |
Dang, I remember when you had your first twin. Really digged your simple but clean look.

Got wheels a couple weeks ago. Naturally, they had to be TEs lol. And of course, they're Bronze.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7f25f651_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...81aea6aa_b.jpg Not a big fan of the way the red SL stickers looked on the Bronze though, so I ordered some RAYS/VOLK spoke stickers, which give the wheel a much better, more classic look I think. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0059820b_b.jpg Bought these now because they're limited production and I didn't want to miss out. I was going to do 17" Sagas but I just can't bring myself to like the face design the same way I like the OG face. I'd prefer 17s, but I'll take the proper looking 18s over the slightly odd looking 17" Sagas. Waiting on GR steering wheel and shift/ebrake boot to come back from my friend at Sweidit so I can get the interior buttoned up. Next on the list is oil cooler and catch can so I can have the engine good to go for upcoming track days at the end of summer. |
Subed!

What's the plan for suspension?

Also, forgot to add the GR cluster. I like the all white tach much more than the OE unit, and it goes well with the car I think given the other GR parts I've got. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...6ff190ac_b.jpg |
