short throw shifter for '16 BRZ manual transmission

I used to have an '06 Scion tC with the five speed. I added the TRD short shift kit which was great. I see TRD has a couple of these for the FR-S/86. Any experience and recommendations on what to get? You could say I am trying to shorten the throw distance when shifting. Thank you in advance.

I have the STI short throw on the BRZ and the stock 5-speed shifter on my 09 tC. If you liked the short throw TRD shifter on your tC, you will be pleased with the STI short throw. It's pretty tight. I shift top-row with my thumb and bottom row with my middle finger. I rarely have a need to touch the knob.

Do you have the part number?

I would need to be sure it fits my 2016 as it seems like the Subaru parts website made it seem like there were differences in the model years.

It doesn't look like it is available for a 2016. Subaru's website shows part # C1010CA100 for the 17+.

That is frustrating. I wonder what the differences are.

Not sure what would best. Would like to keep the stock look, but change the throw.

For the stock look... isn't that just the collar and a knob? What's under it is performance, on top is the icing. You can get an STI knob from Subaru or other websites.

JCC 03-05-2020 01:04 AM

Right. Not too worried about the icing, but want the shorter throw distance.

What is the "MTEC SHIFT SPRING KIT" for?

They are stronger springs to center the shift lever. Supposed to make going from one gear to another more precise.

I don't think the STI short shifter was available prior to 2017 (the TRD one was). When I was looking into short shifters the TRD one apparently had some rattling issues, but I haven't read anything negative about the STI one.

Since the transmission and stock shifter carrier are unchanged throughout the model years it should fit your 2016 no problem.

This is the one I am looking at on the Subaru parts website:

https://parts.subaru.com/p/Subaru__B...1010CA100.html

These are the ones I am considering through Subispeed:

STI JDM Short Shifter (6MT)
https://www.subispeed.com/sti-short-...-6mt-2013-ft86
(is a Subaru part, from what I understand, and may be the same as above)

FT-86 Speedfactor Short Throw Shifter
https://www.subispeed.com/ft-86-spee...fter-2013-ft86

recommended addition of MTEC Shift Spring Kit

I would avoid the FT86 Speedfactory version, myself and other members on here have purchased it and had issues. Mine rattled constantly, and the reverse lockout would strike the retainer plate bolts. Even if I was holding the lockout up to avoid the bolt, the shifting was overly stiff. Another member had the "ball" come loose.

The MTEC springs and a polyurethane shifter stay bushing improve the feel of the stock shifter, notably the centering return and engagement into the gears. I'd suggest trying that combo before buying a shifter. If you want to take it a step further, the shift lever bushings can be replaced as well. https://www.rallysportdirect.com/par...tainer-bushing

There was a new part number for the shifter for 17+ models, but I've yet to read if there is actually a difference.

I appreciate the feedback. Definitely leaning toward the STI version possibly along with the springs. As far as I know, they can be used together. Please let me know if anyone knows.

The springs are inside the transmission, they won't affect your choice of shifter.

Again, I would suggest the springs, stay bushing and even the lever bushings before buying the STi shifter. You may find stock is adequate with the action firmed up.

Just an FYI, but the springs are not a fun install. Be patient or you will cross thread the retaining plugs.

I appreciate it. I feel like I would still like the shorter throw as well as any firming up.

What are the other part numbers besides the springs and will those part work with any shifter including the STi?

Found this thread which makes it seem like it would work on all BRZ models.
