Resonator delete? Sound with stock muffler?

Has anyone tried the stock system without a resonator?

jm1681 08-06-2012 07:18 PM

Bump for curiosity :)

Sounds like a plan to me XD We might never know if no one ever takes the plunge ;)

I have been running Berk's muffler delete for ~300 miles and it sounds great,

I imagine the resonator being removed would add more in cab resonance but that is truly an uneducated WAG...

Try it please and report

Nate219BRZ 08-06-2012 07:45 PM

I want to know if you can hear it at idol

jm1681 08-06-2012 07:46 PM

Hear the fact that the resonator is removed, you mean?

Nate219BRZ 08-06-2012 08:09 PM

Ya like a little more grunt out of it, some throat

Likely a bit more rasp. Resonators usually drown the high frequencies, so I wouldn't expect too much additional roar ;)

jm1681 08-09-2012 08:21 AM

Bump.

So, did you ever pull the resonator?

dunphyjp 08-09-2012 12:29 PM

this looks interesting... like the old hype in the R56 JCW MINIs, everyone wanted to know what a catless downpipe on a JCW stock catback would sound like...

and like that i wanna know what the stock system can sound like with little tweaks! any pics/videos of your little setup?

jm1681 08-09-2012 01:25 PM

I don't think he's done it yet, but, if I DO get my car next Friday, there is a good chance I'll have done it the following DAY.

Nate219BRZ 08-11-2012 01:20 AM

Having trouble finding someone with SS everyone tells me galvanized pipe is all they have. I ordered the nameless axle back probably, gonna delete resonator with that so people hate me. Going to buy my own pipe and have my buddy whos a pipe fitter weld it. What i would do for a lift at my house.

I feel your pain ;)

Hearing that the stock midpipe is pretty restrictive, and that there is power to be made there, I think I am going to pull mine when the time comes (Read: The day after I get my car).

Bump... anyone removed the resonator?

I've got a complete OE exhaust I'll be ready to cut up shortly, remove resonator and put on ebay..

jm1681 09-05-2012 10:38 AM

I see what you did there -_-

mastertech86 09-05-2012 11:26 AM

i have a friend who had the resonator removed in place of a straight through pipe but the rest of the exhaust left untouched...a bit of rasp is heard but nothing over the top. sound level seemed to stay pretty much the same from the outside but inside the car its a little bit more noticable.
sorry i wont be able to get any video of it being its not my car so you will just have to take my opinion of the sound =)

You said he's a friend, right? Can't you just ask him to video his car?

mastertech86 09-05-2012 03:18 PM

"she" is the friend and i will ask them to make a video when they can =)

Fixed (Yeah, I'm a grammar jerk), and she would be most awesome if she obliged ^_^

So after installing my nameless performance downpipe.. the manager talked me into testing out the car with the resonator removed. Well, I agreed and the end result was quite a bit of high pitched rasp. It didnt sound too bad at low RPMs though. He is going to order an 8" resonator for me and fab up a custom midpipe for me this saturday.

I can make a video of the removed resonator but it wont be an accurate representation of the car with the stock system since I have the Greddy SP elite and the Nameless catted DP.

Heres the video... I really wouldnt recommend fully removing the resonator unless you plan to replace it with a smaller one.
