Changes since 2017?

Newbe here. I recently rented a BRZ and liked it enough that I'm thinking about picking one up. The one I drove was a 2019, but I like the color yellow so I'm thinking about getting a 2017 when that color was available. Are there any noticeable differences between the 2017 and the 2019/2020 models? I looked around for this and didn't find much, but sometimes don't have much success with the search tool. Thank you!

They have Apple Car Play and Android Auto now.

That is all.

RayRay88 03-02-2020 06:57 PM

Not sure about the BRZ, but the 86's moved the back up rear camera to the rear view mirror from the head unit.

R_E_L 03-02-2020 08:52 PM

What Tcoat said. There were different trims like the tS, but if you are comparing a '17 limited to an '18 limited the only differences are in the headunit.

Yeah, the BRZ I drove had the back up camera displayed in the head unit. It had Nav and Apple Carplay also.

New world leaders in a number of countries..

Only in the GT trim...the base models still have the backup cam in the Head unit.......

Very odd choice as the head units are the same.

You sure? The Toyota site shows self dimming with rear camera for all the trims in 2020.

Define yourself. Do you love to drive, or are you <fooled> fascinated by fancy "technology" in cars? 2017 (and arguably 2013) to present day all drive the same. Save your money for mods (tires, driver-mod, etc) and go 2017.

There is no reason in the world that you can not love to drive AND want/use the tech. None! One does not preclude the other in any way except in the minds of the elitist "do you even drive bruh" crowd.

They might have changed it to the rear view mirror for 2020 with the new head units.

I know in 2017 the cameras were still on the head units, and with the GT trims they were on the mirrors, i figured itwas like this until 2020.

Can't find any info on the Canadian Toyota site so it may be just USA. The Canadian site completely sucks for listing features.

My 2019 base model 86 has the camera displayed in the rear view mirror. There was a lot of confusion about that from the dealership prior to the delivery, so it might be the year when they made the change and all 86 have it in the rear view mirror from now on.

gravitylover 03-04-2020 11:31 AM

Clearly I should sell my 2013 and buy one with the autodimming feature!

In all honesty though I did like the autodimming on my previous car, but it didn't have a reverse camera (never owned a car with one).

See that is a feature you would expect them to list on the Toyota site. They don't eve say it has a mirror much less that it is self dimming.

but I'm sure you did it for more than just an autodimming mirror.

I don't know about your recent experience with your Toyota dealer, but mine was horrible and still is. I don't want to hijack this thread, but I think it's relevant to the lack of infos on the changes over recent years.

In the showroom and on the phone while I was waiting for the car to arrive from Japan, I asked a lot of questions, mostly about features on +17's cars. The backup camera was one of them, since they are mandatory in Canada now. It was total confusion between the salesman and the service guys, even the day I took delivery (I think I wrote about that here somewhere).

I know they don't sell a lot of these over here, but they should know about their products!! The changes on the +17"s models were their culprit and the Canadian website has so little infos, it's not going to make up for their lack of interest in this car .

Just for fun, here a list of the things I asked and what they answered. Some while I was in the showroom and some on the phone, all in french, I'll translate:

Q - Do they have dual climate control now?
A - None of them have it, it's such a small car!

Q - What about the final gear on newer models?
A - You can have it in manual or automatic. (I'm not joking)

Q - I heard that the newer models are faster than the previous ones?
A - Yeah, these things are fast now!!

Q - It's still the same engine from Subaru, right?
A - Not really, it's a boxer engine like the ones on Porsche's cars.

Q - Can I get a paint touch up marker when I'll get the car (halo)?
A - I checked and this color doesn't exist, you must be talking about whiteout?

And it goes on and on ever since I have to deal with them (radio, tires, wheels, oil). My dad is shopping for one this year, in his area and the saleman told him that the 86 is a collaboration between Toyota and...BMW!! He walked away...

So OP, they are some minor things that changed over the years, just don't ask Toyota about it, always go with Subaru guys...or this wonderful forum.

In fairness to the sales guys they only sell a couple of hundred a year across the whole country so they may not be as informed as they should be in some of the features. No excuse for the really off comments though.
My local dealership won't even carry them anymore since they get loads of people that want test drives and none that actually buy. They will order them in for you but it requires a $2500 non refundable deposit. They don't even have the brochures in the racks! The Toyota Canada website really shows how little they care about this car in this country. It is sort of just "CAMRY, COROLLA, YARIS, TUNDRA, HIGHLANDER, Oh and we have these 86 things as well EH".

mrg666 03-04-2020 07:25 PM

If you are there to ask such questions, you deserve those answers. My sales person recommended buying a Camry instead. There is nothing surprising. I only cared about the price he gave in the end.
