Rusty Disk Rotor in Brand New Car?

Heya, anyone seen rusty disk rotor when collected brand new car?
The reason I am asking because normally the car sits weeks/months at port and in dealership's warehouse. Those disk rotors are very prone to rust, isn't it?
I know I am noob and I want to enrich myself from your experience :-)

Yes. Rotors will rust literally within MINUTES of getting wet. They are cast iron. It is completely normal, and will wear off after a few minutes of driving. They can even rust so quickly that it can take a bit of engine power to "unlock" the pads from the rotors the next morning if you parked the car after having driven in the rain.

So, even on collection brand new, I will definitely see rusty rotors?

If you wash the car, by the time you are drying, there is already rust forming on the rotors. So yes, it's possible.

Why? Every car in the world is like that. That's how chemistry works, lol.

milanojess 01-08-2020 09:03 PM

That’s why you drive them to keep them shinny

rotor rust is your car crying out for attention.

DarkPira7e 01-08-2020 09:06 PM

Get carbon ceramic brakes! They don't rust :)

Impureclient 01-08-2020 09:17 PM

Here's a YouTube video that explains all about this. Just don't do the oiling trick they use, just drive the car to fix that surface rust. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=louBM-Mix7s[/ame]

Thank you guys for the replies. It is totally understandable about nature of the elements. But, isn't manufacturer should follow a way so that at least rust will start growing after leaving the dealership?
I am just nut about it. I work for Apple and I saw that all brand new products from Apple feels so nice and satisfying when you buy it. (after that what happens, thats another story thou)

why? 01-08-2020 09:35 PM

you are asking if you can figure out a way to blacken the sun because you think it is too bright. Or make food with zero calories.

They could only deliver vehicles from the factory when it isn't raining (or in an enclosed shipping container), and instruct the dealership not to wash the vehicle at all before delivering it to the customer... but this isn't a Ferrari, so that isn't going to happen. It gets shipped on an open transport truck, where it will get wet, and start to rust, and it'll get washed by the dealership before being delivered to you.

It's just how cars work.

Above is just one manufacturer's attempt to deal with the problem of rusty looking rotors and brake dust. The Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB).

The worst part is when op is told it is normal, he will not except it. Why ask then?

You're from a place literally surrounded by salt water. Rust is going to happen.

You'll be just fine. Stop worrying about rust on rotors. As long as you don't leave the poor car to just sit and rot, all is well.

Hi ya, alone1i - :)

I see your post has drawn some straight answers and some "jest ah messen wich ya" answers.

After reviewing your threads and posts on this forum, I believe your question/concern is honest.

I suggest you just relax a bit as far as your new car purchase is concerned. Take it from an elder, life is too short to get your panties all bunched up about things that you have little or no control over.

Now, what I suggest is that if you have a question about your new car, it's OK to post the question, but for heavens sake, just go with the first straight response. If the first response is not straight, ol humfrz (or someone) will :slap: the smart ass that gave it to you.

Meanwhile, while you are getting your head around the care and feeding of your new machine, feel free to PM ol humfrz with your questions -

Yep, I miss my grandpas too. One taught me how to work on machines by taking the time to do so. The other one taught me how to tell stories, as me and my cousins would gather around him by the fire in the fireplace, and tell us how he used to be able to dodge bullets, back in the coal mines of West Virginia.

I think some of y'all are being a bit obtuse. I can grasp the concept from an aesthetics point of view; we do so much else to make our cars look nice. People (not me) spend HOURS clay-barring, waxing, ceramic-coating. If you have a nice set of open wheels, I imagine it could be a bummer to see rusty disks behind them. It obviously does come off in a matter of seconds when driving, but still.

If that's something that really bothers the OP then install carbon-ceramic brakes.

etherdude 01-09-2020 01:37 PM

Yes the cast iron disk brake rotors will rust almost instantaneously after rain, going through a puddle, or washing your car.

I had a national award winning show hot rod that I liked to drive (a 1955 Chevy pickup). The front disks used stock 70's era GM disk brakes. When building the vehicle, we had the new rotors "Jet-Hot" coated (aluminum/ceramic coating used on headers). Then the rubbing surface of the rotors was machined to take off the coating. The rest of the rotor (inner venting, edges, hat, etc.) remained coated and never rusted. The machined rubbing surface was "cleaned" by using the brakes. Stayed good looking for the 16 years since I restored his beauty and was still show quality when I sold it last summer.

Why is it colder at night? Wouldn't it be better if it was just as warm at night as it was in the day when the sun is out?
