Engine pinging (rattle noise) under acceleration
Hi Guys,
Just wondering if anyone else here is hearing or getting engine ping with their brand new 86's. I started to hear my motor pinging at about 850kms and initially thought it was a bad batch of fuel and coincidentally I had less than 1/4 of a tank to go and figured I'll swap over to V power to see if it was a bad batch of bp ultimate but it turned out that fuel wasn't the case. The pinging occurs intermittently between 2000 to 3000rpm when you have no load on the throttle and apply throttle loading. I think it has happened a few times over 3000rpm for me. I've been able to replicate the ping in all gears besides first gear with anywhere of full load on the accelerator/throttle to even as low as 10% loading on the throttle with 5th gear being the easiest to replicate as your pretty much sitting in that rev range when your on the hume hwy at 70km/h. I took the car over to the service center as I was booked in for the first service on Friday and advise them about the issue as well and if they can take a look at it. They went for a long test drive and didn't hear anything at first (typical) but then the foreman jumped in the car with me and I managed to get the motor to ping with him in the car. After a few talks in the car as he didn't think it was pinging, he drove the car again and finally we were both on the same page and the diagnose is that it was definitely pinging. We then took the dealerships demo car out and replicated the issue on it as well and I also manage to meet up with one of my mates with his blue 86 who also have the ping as well. I was advise by the service advisor to place some octane booster for now to see if it helps but no joy at all over the weekend and so I made the call this morning to inform him of the results and he told me that they tried some of the other 86's they had at the dealer since then and they all have the ping and have inform toyota australia of the issue. Is anyone else experiencing engine ping? Its sad to have such an issue with a brand new car which I have been waiting for a while for now :(:(:(:( |
Please keep us advised on the progress with this issue, hopefully its not too serious or else easily rectified.
|
I'm at 600kms. can't say I've noticed anything. will check it out tonight. btw been running the 98 stuff from caltex
|
Sounds like it's happening as the DI cuts out... Kind of weird to see it on bp98 when no yanks have reported on it. Wonder what Toyota response to this will be.
|
Damn this seems different from the DI pump chirping issue and quite scary considering a number of cars from the dealer have the same pinging. With 7 years of development you'd think they would have ironed out issues like this.
Keep us informed pls. |
I'm also quite curious to see if @kharn83 has the same issue or not as the way he describes it is pretty much the same?

Almost every NA Subaru pings on Australian fuel. Most owners (like dealership mechanics) just don't realise.
Try some United Premium 100 and hold tight for tuning options other than ecutek. Any dealership "fix" is likely to be a massive detune, something this car cannot afford. |
so it's the engine and nothing to do with transmission, right? have you tried it on both manual and auto? I don't know much about engines, not sure if transmission would have anything to do with it..:iono:
|
Hmmm, got around 2400kms on the clock and haven't noticed any pinging sounds. Been using BP Ultimate 98 the whole time if that matters... I'll check it out more thoroughly tonight.
How noisy is the pinging? Any chance you could get an audio clip of that noise? I usually terrible at discerning noises haha >.> |
I did try to get some sound clips but its not loud enough to hear from the clips
If you have music on, then you most likely won't hear it at all. Busy road, maybe not as well unless you really know what your listening in for I guess. the loudest I've heard it will be in 5th gear where its really noticeable for me anyways. A quiet road would be easiest to listen for it in 5th. @davey90 I haven't tired it on auto and not sure which models the dealership has as I am only aware of one vehicle they have which was a manual but it shouldn't matter of the transmission |
It's not a gearbox issue. You notice it most in 5th because the engine load is higher. It will be even worse in 6th, if you could hear it.
This may sound like a silly question, but does it also occur when you're "up it", or just when you're cruising and then squeeze the throttle? |
What's the easiest way to replicate it? It's only when you step on the pedal from 0 throttle?

I wonder if 100ron will be bad for the car though as its E10? |

sometimes even when you change gears and you just happen to be within that rev range and as soon as you apply throttle after the gear change you hear it as well if you giving a good loading like shifting at 5k rpm and next gear change means it will be above 3krpm, then there's no ping or even if your revs are below 2000, no ping as well |
Yep, the H6s were the worst of the NAs. The B4 Liberty was shocking, as were the early STis.
There will be no material incompatibility with Ethanol. I've seen the stuff about "chirping", but that's an annoyance more than anything. I'd suggest you try a tank and see. If it chirps instead of pings, that's a massive improvement. |

Easiest way is to be cruising in 5th gear and within the rev range of 2000-3000 and back off to 0 throttle and then apply throttle. You can apply full load but I can hear it even at say 10% load on the throttle |

It will take me sometime to drain the petrol as I just filled up last night with bp98 with octane booster but I'll run the idea across with the service guys as well as I don't want them to come back to me and say something like oh you used 100ron so we will void your warranty or something like that =\ Actually wouldn't running octane booster and 98 will be the same? |
Try let the car sit in the traffic for some time as temp will rise and even easier to reproduce pinging. If someone has dashhawk you can monitor the ping level digitally with exact level of detonation.
|
I've got 600kms on the clock now, and I cannot say I have heard any knocking so far...
If you could grab an audio clip of it that would help, I'm not good with sounds :P But I'll specifically try the 5th gear 2-3k off-on throttle tomorrow on my way to work though. Fingers crossed nothings up! This is the first I've heard of it on the interwebs hmm might be an aussie problem :S |
Took it out for a quick test, Turned off the music and AC - i didn't hear any pinging or anything out of the ordinary. Tried in gears 2, 3, 4 and 5. If only we could get an audio clip of it in case i do start hearing it...
|
Just got back from my test, nothing sorry.
but i have noticed another problem, i will start a thread :) |
With hard gear changes I've been seeing these cars ping. Nothing else
John |
Gave it a go this morning on the M4 - couldn't hear anything out of the ordinary...
Tried in 5th and 6th ~2.5k rpm - nothing. Doesn't sound too good for you ... :( |
:(
this is driving me insane :( I guess I just have to sit back and wait just so weird =\ thanks for the test though guys |

I am hoping this is purely a fuel issue. |
Man I keep forgetting to jump in your car to hear this pinging sound.. Still no pinging sound for me so far

I used one batch of E10 100 octane fuel and got crickets within 10 minutes.. went back to BP ultimate and the crickets were gone |

may i suggest not using caltex? fill up with shell or bp 98 and see if it changes? i only say because i had a issue with caltex on several occasions where i found water in their fuel (different occasions with different service stations, each time after noticing pinging or loss of power i imidiatly went back to the fuel station and filled up a container and tested the fuel) and i have since stopped using them all together (about 3 years now) |
my first fill was Shell and second fill was BP. can't seem to feel any difference.
can't hear any pinging either. |

"4c off"? That's bad, right? :iono: |
I haven't tried caltex 98 as i've been always using BP ultimate and Mobil synergy in my cars (but no more synergy :( ) besides this one time where i made the switch to shell v power to try to eliminate that a bad batch of fuel was the cause
im quite jealous that you boys don't have this annoying issue lol |

Only makes up for the fact that the regular price is inflated by 4cents... But my local bowsers are always the cheapest in Sydney (love those bowser battles on the Hume Hwy)! Quote:

My bad I wasn't paying attention Sorry |
Whats your build date OP?
Could be an issue for some early car, maybe? |
mines a JUNE build, no issue as of yet @ 750kms using caltex 98.
Edit- im not OP sorry :) |
Lol @ JiB - i was contemplating on whether to post or not as OP but i guess it at least gives an answer that an early build date is probably not the issue.
Build Date April for me and no issues... |
Build date late June here and no issues...
I doubt its down to build date though - otherwise we'd be seeing more of this... sounds like a rare issue :S |
