xcelir8brz Custom Cold Air Intake System
All -
For those of you who followed my Stock Intake Tube Rubber Delete, we have kicked it up a few notches for our own Custom Cold Air Intake we put together on both my Subaru BRZ as well as TBBandit's Scion FR-S. Here is a parts list of what we used to assemble these systems: 1-My Extended Custom Finished Pipe w/Grommet 1-Spectre 8791 Black 3" Low Profile 90° Elbow Boot with 2.5" Insert and Band Clamps 1-Spectre 8771 Black Intake Tube Coupler and Band Clamps 1-Spectre 9405 Air Flow Sensor Mount Tube 1-You Pick Air Filter, Custom Brackets, and Heat Shields Here are some pix from today: https://xcelir8brz.squarespace.com/i...l5?format=500w https://xcelir8brz.squarespace.com/i...he?format=500w https://xcelir8brz.squarespace.com/i...7e?format=500w https://xcelir8brz.squarespace.com/i...jb?format=500w https://xcelir8brz.squarespace.com/i...hl?format=500w https://xcelir8brz.squarespace.com/i...b2?format=500w And an in-car FR-S video as well: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJWlqfPPI68"]Custom Cold Air Intake System Installed on Scion FR-S - Test Drive! - YouTube[/ame] We have successfully completed our R&D efforts. PM me with questions. Thanks! Brian |
We may have to try another video ..car key jingle
|
The sound is like night and day.. so much more aggressive and deeper
|
the video doesnt fully capture the sound, hard to believe all the noise comes from the motor on a stock exhaust.. should also be noted my sound tube has been deleted. the cabin has been relatively quiet, until the CIA went on.. everything bolted right up to Xcelir's custom pipe ( i also dig the red )...beyond words awesome

Drove around a little bit tonight with my brother-in-law and youngest daughter. I took it easy but I had to show off. They've seen my laborious efforts throughout the last weeks, and especially today with TBBandit. They were both really impressed with the quality of my design as well as installation on both cars. They were most impressed with the deep growl and bad ass sound the car made under load (in high gear, it's barely noticeable). They also could tell the car revved and accelerated much faster compared to another trip last weekend we took. We were all giggling because we kept chirping the rear tires. I did not drive it hard (like TBBandit and I normally do). BUt rather, I semi-grannied it. Anyhow, this mod brought back the excitement to when I bought this car.
I am very pleased and I can't see how we could have done it better. It exceeded my expectations and we are using the factory cold air with definitely NO CEL lights coming on. Our next move is to dyno the system when possible and affordable. We can both tell you that there definitely is increased HP that we achieved. Don't know how much, but the assometer could definitely feel it. And the sound is to die for (not literally of course, but I did bleed today) :) Thanks for the support! |
I really want this kit! Price it cheaper then the rest for a good competitive advantage and I'm sure a good chunk of the ft86 community will be rocking this kit!

And FYI - you can add up the cost of the parts and you'll sure to see that the sum of all is much cheaper or half the price of manufacturers kits/products. Though, I don't compete. This is a DIY alternative. The little guy gave a try and has succeeded so far. And this is all about customization and uniqueness. - Brian |

Great work with your custom intake but this thread lacks step by steps and any info on how to obtain or make the secret sauce custom pipe with grommet. Hope you add additional steps and share your thoughts on the design and piping. If not this is just a journal that a Mod can move to the technical exhaust and engine section to clean up the DIY section. The point of the DIY's is the give directions on how to procure the materials and how to put it together for the beginners.

Actually in the first sentence he references people that were following his previous thread here:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12369 so the thread was mostly aimed at those people that were following but gave new people a chance to see what he was working on without having to have missed it since it was a bit buried in the original thread. and he did supply a parts list at least. Everything on the list is pretty easily obtainable and pretty clear to install if you look at the pictures... Although I do agree that if he would have made a bit more of a clear reference(with link) back to the original thread that it'd be a lot more noob-proof, but it's not all that bad. It also explains how he made his "secret sauce" tube. |
I'm curious as to just how much money you've spent buying and modifying various intakes in the last month...

The how-to on creating the pipes itself from raw material to finished product I probably will not provide as the average Joe doesn't have the tools or skills to do what I did. Hope this helps. Brian |
What I have left:
1 Long CAI Black Painted |
A few of you inquired to the 'exact' parts list to make what we did so here it is:
1-My Extended Custom Finished Pipe w/Grommet 1-Spectre 8791 Black 3" Low Profile 90° Elbow Boot with 2.5" Insert and Band Clamps 1-Spectre 8771 Black Intake Tube Coupler and Band Clamps 1-Spectre 9405 Air Flow Sensor Mount Tube 1-OBX Heat Shield (EBay) 1-You'll need to make Custom Brackets if you decide to use the OBX Heat Shield, just buy an aluminum strip, hack saw it, drill holes, and bend it with your hands appropriately. Look at my pictures. 1-Air Filter, cheapest cost, and pretty decent quality is the Spectre Performance 8136 All Spectre parts can be bought at Summit Racing, free shipping, next day delivery. |

For the heat shield I only found a single person on ebay that officially sells them from OBX. Thanks again to Brian for his great work! |
The OBX heat shield from TuningDepot/EBay (only a few left) is made of frickin' heavy duty solid stainless steel. It's quite awesome! Not of that cheap crap. It also fits the Spectre filter prefectly. Did you see it on my car, the blue one? Can't see the filter, totally protects it and CAI from stock intake location except reverse mount of intake shield where on the right side, you can see the blue. On TBBandit's car, you can see a little of the red panty line showing. :) All he would have to do is push the heat shield from drivers side of car towards CAI and the aluminum bracket we made will bend. Lots of options!
Note: I ran without the heat shield for over a week with no CEL issues. The heat shield IS NOT REQUIRED! It's optional. However, it does help. The key is the pipe and sum of parts to tuck the air filter half way into the front of the stock airbox. Less heat to filter/engine bay, more air volume from front bumper and dispertion of colder air. |
On another note. And I'm not comparing product or quality or anything. Just sound. The sound of our intake is so much louder and angrier sounding than that posted regarding the Airraid. Both are dramatically different sounds. I like ours, it's meaner sounding and louder.
|
FYI -
I have one lightly used K&N filter and custom bracket that will hook right up to the MAF Adapter->Long Pipe I designed for that individual that might be interested. I don't need it, have too many parts laying around! http://www.heagney.net/filterbracket.JPG |

I have one long tube left, black and then that's it!
|
Uploading 3 BRZ videos! Stay tuned!

All 3 videos posted. This is what a 'mean' intake sounds like on a Subaru BRZ!

1 Painted Black Long Tube and 1 Painted Black Short Tube 1 Unpainted Short Tube |
EvoXDD ... Much appreciated. He got the last pipe. I had one more set aside but someone backed out. Therefore I still have one very last black painted CAI pipe left. Then no more!
|
What filter is the blue one above?
|
Spectre 8136
|
Pm'd you about k&n filter and bracket. I will take that as well. Pm me when
You get a chance please. Thanks! |
PM'd you.
|
Thanks for the quick replies and help. This is going to be a fun project to tackle, just got to pick a filter. Thinking of going with Cobb, I like the blue and would think the quality is better than Spectre (could be wrong).
|
You can use any filter you want. We threw in a better quality spectre for the time being. I personally like K&N, but the fitment into the closed heat shield, the spectre fit perfect.
I'm still working on ideas and started to work with a few plastic manufacturers to assist in bringing plastic pipes 'officially' to market based on this aluminum design. Plastic is a much lower thermal conductor than aluminum, but it all depends on cost. Fitment will not be an issue. This may be months out, but hey, we'll see. |
HOOLD UP....do you have an exhaust system or does it sound like that because of the intake and the fact that its in the garage?
