Looking For a New Daily Tire
So, after clocking over 30k street miles, my Continental ExtremeContact Sports are finally dead. On the hunt now for a new set of daily drivers. I live in Nashville, TN which can get pretty cold in winter, but we don't usually see much snow. And on the rare days it does snow, I just work from home. lol That being said, what are you guys liking for street tires these days? I guess the Pilot Sport 4S is the new king, but they're real pricey. Guess I'm really looking for the best bang for the buck street tire. Any recommendations would be appreciated. :thanks:

What did you think of the Conti's?
Honestly I'd just run those again unless you didn't like them. I've run them multiple times on multiple cars and haven't found anything better in the price range and in the same category (yes, there's plenty of better that are 200TW). I've also run Sumitomo "summers" (don't recall exact name) and for the price they were great. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk |

Those Continentals are so good that I'm about to order a new set. They can be a little tricky if the road surface is cold, but otherwise aren't bad at all. |
Ideally, I'd like to find something with a symmetrical tread pattern. I have to run pretty aggressive camber most of the year for AutoX, so that leads to more inside camber wear. With a symmetrical tire, I can flip them on the rim when they start to wear unevenly. It may not be possible with street tires, but that's what I'm aiming for. The General G-MAX RS looks kind of interesting.

Falken Azenis FK510 has been great for me, can get them pretty cheap too. I'm -3 in the rear but at $130 a tire I'll just get new ones when they wear out

Not exactly performance tires, but I've been very happy with my Yokohama YK580s. I just put the YK740 gtx on my wife's car. I get the same entertainment from tire reviews as I get from reading Amazon reviews. "These Pirelli suck. They won't corner or brake worth **** on my 1986 Chevy Suburban. -John Doe in Wisconsin"

Also, define cold. |
How much camber to you have? I am at over -3F and they wore pretty even until the very end. The last few hundred miles the insides went quickly but the whole tire was pretty much done at that point.
I decided to go with the Hankook Evo this round. I did really like the Conti's though. |

Typically if you're seeing inside tire wear, it's due to toe, not negative camber. Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk |

I've got my crash bolts maxed out running -2.7 Front & -2.2 Rear. Sort of a compromise setup for AutoX and daily driving. I think the alignment was out of whack for a while which probably exacerbated the inside wear. The rest of the tire was down to the wear bars though. |

I like my General GMax AS05's a lot. They're wearing very well, have been extremely predictable, are quiet enough on the highway, they're absolutely fantastic in the rain and they handle and ride nicely. I like them a lot more than the Conti EC's that I had before.
|
I like General tires a lot. I have a set of the cheapest on my car for daily and they are awesome as long as you don't want ultimate traction. And by that I mean shifting from first to second at redline my stock car spins the tires for about 2 or 3 seconds. I enjoy sliding around a bit more than most seem to though.

Surprised nobody has mentioned the Hankook Ventus V12 Evo 2. One of the best daily tires I've felt.

OP, I was going to get MPS4S, but I bought a 4th car, so my FR-S budget has changed. I will be trying a set of Indy 500's. Because: They have good reviews and are approx 1/2 the cost. |
I second the Hankook evo 2s. I had them and I think I got about 40K miles out of them. Tons of grip, but that fades with time as with all tires.
Running the conti extreme contact sport now cause I got a deal on them. Grip is not quite as good as Hankooks. Will see how they wear. If I don't get 40K miles at least I will go back to hankooks evo 2s. |

I prefer the ECS over the Evo so far too, though I haven't worn out the Evo so I can't comment on mileage yet.

I had the Hankook V12's on my Saab 9-3 before and they didn't suit front-heavy FWD cars because of the really soft sidewalls. They were comfortable and quiet though.
I always thought that tire would fare better on lightweight RWD cars but I wanted more grip for spirited driving. I would go Indy500 or S04 Pole Position for the more affordable price range, then if you have a larger budget then ExtremeContact Sport or Pilot Super Sports (if you can still find them). |

I'd rate the Evos along side Sumitomo HTR Z3, which I had before my first set of EC DW. |
I just replaced a set of Sumitomo HTRZ-3 tires with the Conti ECS. The improvement was huge. The wet and dry grip of the conti's is far far superior. I am very happy with them and think you may have a hard time finding anything much better in a street tire.

Think I'm going to go with something in the UHP Summer tire category. Is there any way to find out sidewall stiffness? I don't want to end up with something that feels squishy on the road.

Are you on stock suspension? In comparing the V12 to the Contiextreme contact sport, the V12 is a better tire in many ways. More grip and the wet handling was amazing for me.
IMO, the only downside of the V12 is the soft sidewall. Contis have a stiffer sidewall but no way is grip as good. |

I think that was directed at me? I'm on RCE Tarmac 2's with 400/400 spring rates. Suffice to say I can definitely handle aggressive tires with my suspension setup. I run RE-71R's for Autocross and HPDE stuff. In the past I've run Michelin PSS and Continental ECS for my street tires. But it seems like some of the UHP Summer tires can offer similar performance for significantly less coin. The Indy 500, FK510, and G-MAX RS all look promising for regular street duty. |
bfg gforce sport comp2's
theyre a 340 treadwear ultra high performance summer tire, slays in the rain too. it is possible to out drive them on a track, but you literally cannot buy more tire for the money. its what i dd with occasional track days. they were initially recommended for dd w/ track days to me buy a pro racing instructor at monticello, a private membership only track in upstate ny. like jerry seinfeld is a member there lol. they are top notch racing instructors so i took his word when he said you cannot buy more tire for the price. |
@HaXx I like the wide tread on those! They’re symmetrical too which is a plus for me.
|
I run General Tires AS-05's on both of my vehicles, no complaints. Before these tires were available I ran two sets of AS-03's on my last vehicle.

What did you go with?

Indy 500's are a great value proposition. They have stiffer sidewalls which should keep them relatively responsive.
I scored a set of MPS4S in stock size for an absolute steal with 85% tread. Zero complaints about them, tons of grip in all conditions. They even gripped well when temps got down to 5-10c before throwing on the snows. Cost of replacement is the only real downside as they are expensive. The FK510 seems to be aimed at sport/luxury market. A grippy tire that has a bit less sidewall stiffness. If I went Falken I'd probably go with the RT615k+. Looked briefly at those but a 200TW tire is a bit much for daily use. |
I'll second (or third?) the Indy 500's. I put a set of 225/45/17 on the PP wheels. I got them for $94 a tire direct from Firestone. They retain the playful nature of the stock Primacy's but the grip is waaaaay more predictable. Can't speak to their capability in the wet yet as I'm in California ands it's dry 9 months out of the year.
