Toyota Celica name possible for European/Asian market
Autocar have just confirmed that the Celica name will be used in Europe www.autocar.co.uk
|
Link:
http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsAr...llCars/257462/ Makes a lot of sense. Would've made sense for the US market too but oh well... |
DAMMIT! There is only one time that I'm not proud to be an American and that is when this car hits the showroom floor as a fuggin Scion! :mad0259:
In the US it’ll be sold under Toyota’s Scion sub-brand so there’s no single global identity, leaving the door open for the Celica name to make a reappearance in European and Japanese markets. A Toyota insider says 86 is likely to be retained in its name somewhere, however, as the car has been conceived as a tribute to Toyota’s classic AE86 Corolla. |
I smell badge swapping!
Honda Integra! Sounds weird doesn''t it? |

Personally I kind of hope it is true, but Scion for me? Sigh... |
:bs:
|
Yeah, definitely NOT a confirmation of any kind. If anything, the article works to make it seem less likely about the 86 being in the name somehow. Thread title needs to be changed.
That said, if the rest of the world gets a Celica and we get the 'FR-S' I'd be so fucking pissed. If it does and I ever buy one, I'll pay whatever needed to rebadge it as a Celica. |
Says nothing about it getting confirmed, just that it's possible for the car to be called a Celica.

A conversation with me and my cousin in Europe:
Cousin: What car did you buy? me: A Scion FR-S. Cousin: Scion? whats that? me: oh its called a TOYOTA Celica everywhere else... |

People should read beyond the headline. Still cracks me up people whining about Scion though. It's like people in Australia whining they have to buy a Holden instead of GM. I'm still putting money this won't be named Celica for numerous reasons but the biggest being that it's paying homage to a Corolla. So why name it Celica? |
why? because it will sell more cars.
i'd buy a toyota badge over a subaru badge over a scion badge for a car like this. and that's why they'd call it a celica in europe, most europeans feel the same way about celica over corolla as i feel about toyota over scion. but you're right, this confirms NOTHING. who cares what they call it... i am more interested in CONFIRMED leaks about price and weight. |
[QUOTE=ToyotaObsession;45258]Nothing was confirmed....
People should read beyond the headline. Still cracks me up people whining about Scion though. It's like people in Australia whining they have to buy a Holden instead of GM. QUOTE] The problem is, we get retards here putting chevrolet bagdes on their holdens thinking its 'fully shick bro'. However im opposed to calling this a celica, but thats because in my mind a celica is a FF car (I wasnt around when they were 4WD and FR) |

I see you've also done polling all over Europe to find out what they prefer. You can't say most people feel the same way you do, because you have no idea. The people who frequent this forum are probably .00001% of the Global market. More likely not even that. So yeah people who come here are going to feel strongly about what it's called, etc. But we are far outweighed by people who aren't that interested in the name or what brand it is. [QUOTE=farugah;45273] Quote:
Even if they never went FF, there's nothing about this that says Celica. Other than they are both sports cars. But by that logic you can call it the Toyota Viper then. |

Just a bit OT question what does a decent AE86 sell for in the USA currently? |
Quote:
They should give it power and call it Supra :happyanim: or try new name like a day when they add word "Levin/Truno" to a Corolla. |
I for one think it WILL be called the Celica, but I've thought that since the first prototype. It has 9th gen Celica cues all over it.
As for what the Scion will be called...they'll probably stick with FR-S, which is unfortunate because that's not a name. I miss the days when cars had actual names. Not only do they sound better, but it also could serve as an inspiration for decos and looks. The best new vehicle name within the last decade is probably Cayman. |

I grew up seeing FR Celicas, but even then, when I hear Celica now I think of the FF ones from the 6th, 7th gen. Are AE86s known or remotely popular in Europe? Have no idea. |

Theres lots of good cars older than me ;) the car I drive now is only 4 years younger. @Riden86 As much as it would be awesome for this to be the next supra its not going to be anything like it powerwise :( @Aki I didnt know the AE86 was popular outside of japan, and the people outside of japan who love drifting. |

This is off topic, but the quoting system is weird on this page. Showing the wrong names. :eyebulge:

p.s. no one here complains that we get a Holden instead of a GM, the only thing we complain about is that GM wont make the camaro in Right Hand Drive, and bring it down here |

Good luck with that. Has any domestic sports car been RHD? It would be kinda cool to see a new RHD Camaro. |
Quote:
Stupid thing is the Camaro was largley designed by holden and sits on a cut n' shut VE Commodore platform... how rude to not make a RHD version for us :( As for the name of the FT-86... I dont understand why calling it a celica is such a big deal, I think the styling fits, parts of it remind me a lot of a 6th gen (that also reminds me of the last supra) and that model celica had cred (in GT-FOUR form anyways). I think it has been designed with the driving spirit of the AE86 but there the resembelence ends... the styling seems to have the spirit of the celica (except the 7th gen... i think that was a step in the wrong direction). |
yeah, thats not a confirmation...thats just speculation.
His insider could be the owner of a dealership for all we know. Until Toyota says otherwise, -nothing- is confirmed. |

Before that, just as important than trim in measuring market price is really what body style. Coupes fetch a smaller price than hatches. SR-5's are about as universal in price as it gets. A beaten up but running one is worth (Thats, net worth to the enthusiast market) about 800-1200. A good condition running SR-5 is anywhere between 1200-2000, with $2000 being exceptionally clean and straight, and typically in an area where AE86's are heavily rare, because only the desperate would buy an SR-5 for $2000. If you're paying more than $2000 for an SR-5 you're no longer desperate, you're downright insane, UNLESS you already have access to necessary parts to convert it basically into a GT-S....or any other parts to make it competent (like say tuned 3T-C, etc.). GT-S' are a different story. I've seen ok condition hatches sell for as much as $4500. But you could say the average for a running ok/good condition GT-S is $2500-$5000, depending largely on how well maintained it is and what mod's are on it. Non-running GT-S' can still sell well, especially if the interior is clean and the body is marginally free of scars. My friends non-running '86 (kouki) hatch sold for $2200 a few years back. My hatch with the currently not running 4A-GE, could probably easily sell down here for $2500. Why? Well, the GT-S market down here is pretty scarce. It's also a hatch. An unmolested (not touched AT ALL) and clean GT-S hatch would fetch the highest premium next to a professionally built GT-S hatch street car....and the price is really very dependent on the market variables. I'd say no less than $4500 and as high as $7000. The same car, only low mileage (sub 100k) and clean as all getout....well, I've heard of one selling for $10000. Not joking. This is of course after the huge blowup in popularity of the car and drifting that started in the early 2000's. Before that, the car reflected more the KBB value for a 15+ year old corolla: Not much. |

or ..... may be Supra86club. |
Quote:
The AE-86 was never a model of car... it was a chasis code, the car itself was a corolla and I can't see the FT-86 fitting in as the new sports version of a corolla :confused0068: Personaly I would prefer they just kept FT-86 :w00t: |
To me, Celica is Toyota's ultimate heritage badge and what this car should be called. Both the Supra and the Camry started as Celica models. You can't get more old school than that.
I still can't believe they let that 37-year continuous production nameplate end. That's like Ford discontinuing the Mustang. |
A gap between the 7th and 8th gen celica's is actually a smart move. It means that they shrug off some of the image of the Gen7. MG have done it. Disappear from the market for a number of years...everyone forgets about MG and now MG are back and their new cars look great! :) Toyota can now bring out the Gen8, its RWD and looks awesome! Lets start again now the original formula is back! :)

I really don't see the problem here. ... I mean buy the Subaru. Problem solved. It's prolly gonna be the same Subaru everywhere in the world.
