2019 BRZ Making “chick” noise shifting 1st to 2nd
Hey everyone, new to the forum and a new Subaru owner. I have a 2019 BRZ Raiu edition, when I’m shifting 1st to 2nd I can faintly hear a “chick” noise almost seems to be under the car when I’m shifting only in that gear. If I’m listening to music in the car I don’t hear it at all, only when it’s quiet in the car. I’ve read a lot about how these cars 1st to 2nd is kinda wonky but since it’s my first Subaru and the car is brand new (7000km) I wouldn’t mind getting some opinions on what the noise is? I’m bringing it to the dealer next week to have them listen to it to see if they can figure out what it is.
Thanks! Cheers |
This car makes all kinds of noises. Mine shifts with a loud thunk cause of all the bushings and inserts and I can hear every single coupling/de-coupling clank and click and chick and whine. Sounds like someone is stacking pallets under the car. Totally normal, worry not

My '13 FRS made a bunch of weird noises. When I upgraded to a '17 BRZ, it still made weird noises. I decided not to worry about it unless it sounded truly bad lol. I kinda like it too.

Tip: Brand new car, huge warranty, just drive the thing. If something feels bad then take it in, else if it drives normal just enjoy. Don't put the car on a pedestal, it will slowly ruin your experience. |
Chick noise? Does car go ooh when driving past shoe stores?

I think your tranny 'whine' is related to its protests that it's stuck under a Lava body.. |
You guys are disgusting. Back to nasioc for me!
|
my car 'chicks' in 1-2, like gently putting keys onto a table. this car did it from day one, as well as the one before it. it's to remind you that you're driving a stick. turn the radio up, and drive it!

I was told all manual cars make a lot of noises nothing to worry about. Even though I have been driving over a year noises are still there. One thing to note 1st to 2nd gear is always a pain in the b*** especially from the cold start.

Just need a louder stereo. Then I wont hear the throw out bearing, direct injectors, fuel pump, rocker arms, shift linkage, dash creaks, road noise, suspension crackles, differential groan.....

When the tranny is cold just go neutral to second give it a blip and up into first. Works every time for me. |

I'm approaching six years of ownership, and mine is still coming up with new and interesting sounds. |

I did get +5hp too, but that was definitely from the sticker I added at the same time. |
I was being sarcastic lol but I'm glad that the sticker worked for you.

Welcome to the forums. Serious answer:
My 2019 Sport-tech RS is also insanely notchy from 1st to 2nd. If I don't row perfectly longitudinal to the car it will clank into 2nd - I fkin hate it. The Raiu is even worse due to the short shifter. The trick is to not put more pressure than you have to against the left side of the gate so you don't snag the reverse gate. Guide it back, don't pull diagonally towards you. I also noticed that I can only get it to smoothly slip into 2nd if I'm rolling off slowly and immediately shift from 1st to 2nd at 11kph, or shifting into 2nd at the redline. Anything in between sometimes it will clank into 2nd. |
If the transmission is cold, I'll go 1st --> neutral --> 2nd with the shifter. All the while, I'm clutched in the whole time (not double clutching). For some reason, it works well for me. Much less notchiness. Used to do it on my previous VW as well. Else, I'd get locked out during really cold weather.
When the temp gets up (15 minutes or so), I'll just shift regularly 1-->2 and it's pretty smooth. Sometimes can feel the synchros if I try to shift too quickly but it's a lot better than when it's cold. Either way, gears 1-3 have triple-coned synchros. I like to think on stock power, it lasts longer than any of us will care to own the car. You'll hear and sometimes feel a lot of things you ordinarily don't in most other cars, due to the lack of insulatio,n and the transmission being right beside your leg. So long as the car runs ok, it seems to be the norm. Drive on! |
