Buying a BRZ with open valve spring recall

I have been looking at getting a BRZ, with what has been available and within my budget I am lookin at the earlier models. I have found a 2013 BRZ but it has an open recall for the valve springs. What is your guys opinion on this? The only reason I am considering this car is the price. Please let me know what you guys think.
Thanks,

If it's a good deal, I would go ahead and buy it and forget about the recall. The engine has a much better chance of staying in one piece if you just ignore the recall.

So are people just ignoring the recall altogether? I was trying to look into more information on the recall and all I found was blown motors...

From what I’ve read, not firsthand experience, some guys avoid the recall because when the engine is sealed back up it has to be done carefully. Otherwise sealant can break off into the engine, and get stuck in the valves, and cause havoc. A good Subaru shop should be able to do it in their sleep. I’m not as certain about a Toyota service center.

I would probably want a 2013 that hasn’t had the recall done, that way you can decide. I’m not sure how long the recall campaign lasts for though. Good luck finding your FR-S! You will love it. [emoji3]

These engines do not re-seal easily at all. Get it and avoid the recall at all costs. Unless you're in California, this is possible.

If it's a BRZ and the work is done by Subaru there is hardly anything to worry.
However if it's a frs and being done by Toyota, there's shit ton to worry.

Or.... save up a few dollars and get a '15+ and never have to worry about the recall.

If I was you, I’d definitely save up a bit more money and get one without the recall. I understand sometimes good deals are hard to come by, but to me, it’s worth the peace of mind. A car is a major purchase and I’m sure you’ll be glad you got to avoid the recall mess.

If you’re dead set on getting that one, skip the recall. Good luck hope to see you in a twin soon

Remark00 09-09-2019 03:14 AM

Thanks for the input everyone. I am still going to go check out the 2013 BRZ tomorrow just to kick tires. But more than likely I am going to wait tell I can find a good deal on a 15+ model.

I'd actually say it is advantageous to have the open recall on a BRZ. If they have to pull the engine anyway, you can get some other maintenance done pretty cheaply. Spark plugs, clutch, TOB, and I'm sure a few other headache items become much less expensive in labor. Or just don't get it done. Mine has not had the recall done and I'm not worried.

If you are going to get a 2015+, just save a bit more and get a 2017+. 2017 brought some worthwhile revisions to the design by my understanding.

Oh, what the heck, save up even a bit more and get a Supra - :burnrubber:

Ah that sucks. Hopefully you hadn't gone far out of your way when you found out.

Keep looking you will find the right one. [emoji6]
And consider looking at “dealerships” like Carvana that will provide a national search. My FR-S came from California, and the transportation cost wasn’t bad. It helps to expand your search for a FR-S or BRZ.

Ah, I forgot about carvana. I mean I was looking at the options carvana had locally but they are all somewhat overpriced. But yeah I might hold off a while longer to save up some more money.

Good advice. I REALLY wish I would've done that.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to have one transported with the color and options of your choice, but make sure you test drive one and make sure it's what you want. Being unhappy with the car you bought is bad, but being $15,000+ in debt for lack of research is a bit worse.

Yeah that would be terrible. But I’m pretty sure I like the car and how it drives. I test drove one the other day and oh my they are nice.

That’s a great point, you want to make sure it’s the car you really want, and it sounds like it is! As long as you’ve test driven one you will have a good idea of what to expect.

Great handling (can’t be said enough), stiff ride, not much torque, and lots of smiles. The twins in my opinion are sort of in a class by themselves, there are elements of cars like the S2000, Lotus Elise, and of course the AE86. [emoji3]A directness that really doesn’t exist anymore. The Miata is softer, and doesn’t work for taller folks. Good luck and you will find the one eventually. I personally had better luck finding the FR-S I wanted than a BRZ. I love both, but there aren’t as many BRZ’s out there in general.

Yeah that is what I am staring to notice. I have started to expand my search to the FRS. I found on in town that I am looking at tomorrow. 2015 with 35,000 miles.

I think that’s a good idea, and there are low mileage ones out there. 35,000 miles for a 2015 is pretty low. A lot of these probably aren’t daily driven. Except for us crazy people on here. [emoji28] But really it’s a fun car to daily drive. [emoji106]

I prefer the styling of the FR-S, and I like the old school Japanese sports car vibe of the interior. The BRZ has the Performance Package though.

Yeah the more I look at the FRS o think I like it more. The only thing that turned me away from it was it being a scion. But I’ll just have to change the badges if I get an FRS.

I get that, it should have been a Toyota from the beginning. Like you said, it’s easy to do a badge swap. And I like rocking the Scion logo anyway. Apparently some guys in Japan like to put Scion badges on their 86. Grass is always greener kind of thing I guess. [emoji6] Anyway, don’t worry about the FR-S being a Scion, it will be titled and registered as a Toyota. And you will see Subaru printed all over the car. Let’s face it, the FR-S, 86, and BRZ are like siblings.

Yeah the one I was looking at sold. And I think I’m going to save up more so I can get a newer one with less miles.
