Can depend what you use the car for. Michelin Pilot Sport 4S is a pretty ideal summer street tire for these cars.

JaviBadger 08-23-2019 05:39 PM

I'm using it as my daily driver.

Also, should I stay with the same size tire?

On stock wheels, probably should. You can try going to a 225, but not sure it will be an improvement. You get a tiny bit more surface area in tire itself, but the contact area won't change much unless your wheel is wider too. Going to make the odometer very slightly off and slightly negative effect acceleration too. Just switching to a proper performance tire will be worlds of difference and have a larger contact area than stock tires even though they are the same 'size' because of the profile of the tire.

Awesome! Thanks for the help.

Second this.
If you can afford the 4S do it.
I have a set in the stock size and they're night and day difference.

My second go to for budget are the Firestone Indy 500s. Great dry performance tire and decent in wet.

gravitylover 08-24-2019 01:27 AM

Where do you live, how do you drive, what do you want out of the new tires...? Give us something to go on.

JaviBadger 08-24-2019 02:13 AM

I live in Austin TX. I don't drive aggressive. I want better performance for my car. I'm not trying to put it on the track ever.

Daily driver (which you said you are): Michelin Pilot Sport

Occasional/weekend driver: Just about anything else

The Michelin's are great every day tires, but I do find it WAAAAAY harder to put her sideways like I did on the stock tires. But when you're driving to work on any 'ol day and it's pouring rain out, you'll be glad you have the Michelins... Or at least, I am.

IMHO, YMMV (literally), etc etc

BRZBlack 08-24-2019 06:56 AM

Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Stock size. Best upgrade and the one thing I wish I did earlier. Nice and sticky and you can still break loose if you want without much effort.

gravitylover 08-24-2019 09:06 AM

If you don't want to spend what the MPSS cost, and I wouldn't blame you in the slightest if that's the case, I enjoyed the Continental Extreme Contact AWS a lot but didn't get the life out of them I wanted. Now I have the General G Max AS05's on and they really are great. I've driven in every possible condition other than snow because I was out of commission last winter and have been happy with them, they're pretty amazing in heavy rain too. I know that a couple of other guys here are running them and appreciating them like I am. At ~15k miles so far they are wearing very very well so I'm hoping that 30-35k is easily attainable.

Thanks guys for all the feedback! It's super helpful. And much appreciated.

215/45-17 on stock 7" wheels for sure.
If no freezing-weather/snow/ice usage likely, Summer tires generally have more ultimate dry *and* wet grip than all-seasons. Which category of summer tires depends on your wants/needs/usage:
*Generally*
Extreme Performance (short life, max grip, great for track)
Max Performance (more reasonable life, great grip, more water-channeling capacity/hydroplaning resistance)
Ultra High Performance (still longer life, less ultimate grip, also good water-channeling)

Go to Tire Rack website and review test results and customer survey results to get an idea of relative differences between different make/model tires.

Max perf tires in 215/45-17:

+1 if you don't have real winter summer tires ftw

JD001 08-24-2019 02:12 PM

I have still not got round to changing my OEM tyres... Michelin Pilot Super Sport now only available in 205/45 r17 and the 4S can't be had in 17inch.. You guys certainly get a decent choice of tyre.

ZDan 08-24-2019 02:29 PM

Dunno why people are still talking about the superseded Michelin Pilot Super Sports. They were overrated IMO anyway...

What do you recommend?

DarkPira7e 08-24-2019 02:54 PM

PS4S directly replaced and succeeds over the super sports.
I'd recommend a Hankook Ventus v12 Evo 2 as a DD tire for someone not needing a specific grip threshold. Very cost effective, and support a lot of sizes. Great grip in most conditions aside near freezing like any other summer compound.

why? 08-24-2019 04:27 PM

Falken is coming out with a new tire soon. I can't wait to see what they do.

One caveat to tire reviews is very few of the cars will be lightweight RWD and driven the way we tend to drive these cars so the reviews won't be as valuable as if you drove a Camry or Accord. I think I saw that the OP is in Texas so the reviews that mention dry warm pavement performance and wet road performance will be more valuable than one from the PNW. Also pay attention to the type of car, if it's a 5,000 pound mushmobile the review will be worthless to you with this car.

It depends...
For daily, warmish weather, no or limited track usage, I'd probably get Conti ExtremeContact Sport, or Michelin PS4S.

Some track usage, half to a second per lap no matter, probably Hankook RS4

Competing where lap times matter, RE71R or Yok A052

ZDan 08-24-2019 08:12 PM

The customer reviews are somewhat self-selecting based on tire preference. Doubtful many Camrys are on serious performance rubber.

Also customer reviews over millions of miles compiled in ratings charts will include a lot of different kinds of cars from lightweight Miatae and FT86s to muscleycars and AMG Mercedes behemoths, and also a lot of FF hothatches, etc. But *relative* ratings between tires in a similar category should remain valid.

I put more stock in the objective test results and opinions of testers comparing tires directly, but IMO the "wisdom of crowds" in the tire ratings charts can also be very valuable in determining which tire to get.

I put Falken Azienas 615k+ on mine. still running stock wheel and just used the same size as the stock tires. good tire and plenty of grip. would recommend.

I have these and have been loving them. Definitely recommended, especially if its for a daily driver that won't see serious track/autocross use.

RickyBobby 08-28-2019 06:10 PM

I'm considering getting these: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...145WR7GFC2ASXL The price after the $70. rebate is just over $100 each delivered.

I spoke to a Discount Tire Direct sales rep today and they matched Tire Rack's price and subtracted the $70. rebate; free shipping to their store and no sales tax. I'm still running the original Bridgestone Turanza EL400s.
They still have some tread left but in wet weather, with the nannies on, around corners, the back end wants to meet the front end. They are not cheap and get bad reviews. https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...S&autoModClar=
