First of all, I would like to thank John for this opportunity to help him out and the community. I was lucky enough to be able to meet up with John today at Nightshift Performance in Edison, NJ where he was working on an FRS. He'll post the info on that when he gets a chance later tonight from his comments in another thread.

After chatting for a little about what he was looking to accomplish and has accomplished so far, we took my FRS out for a spin on the stock tune. We then stopped along side a road where he then flashed my car in a few minutes. It kind of reminded me of downloading a video from a camera...lol After it was done, I started the car up and swung a u-turn to only realize I was pointed in the right direction in the first place....ooops. I honestly had no idea where I was other than in central NJ somewhere.

I didn't really have a good chance with John to have an open road to really play around with the car due to the traffic in the area, but we did our best. At first I wasn't sure if I noticed anything different or not. At a red light, I was able to let a car go ahead for a little and I accelerated at WOT and it chirped 2nd like usual but John noticed that VSC & TRAC started to engage so he turned it off. I don't recall it interfering before on the stock flash when it chirped 2nd. I wasn't 100% sure that I noticed a difference or not because traffic was a little heavy and I had no idea where I was going so I was trying to pay attention to other cars, where I was at and trying to listen, feel, etc to how the car responded. Needless to say, I couldn't focus too much on one aspect or I would miss a turn or rear end somebody or not notice the difference in performance.

We stopped back at the shop and I dropped John off and then I headed home. Well, back to work actually. I must thank my managers who let me step out of work for almost 5 hours today to take advantage of this opportunity.

The ride home is where I really had the chance to pay attention to the car and how it responded. The traffic wasn't too bad once I got on 287 and 78 and plus I didn't have to pay attention to missing a turn etc. It was about 100 miles drive from my work to Edison, NJ with about 85-90 of it being highway.

I had the opportunity bang through the gears under WOT and there is DEFINITELY a difference. It seems to pull a little harder and the torque dip is not as noticeable. It's still there, but it is much better. I also noticed that when cruising around 65-70mph in 6th gear, it will accelerate easier to pass someone. I also noticed on NJ 27 (I think that was the route number), when cruising in 3rd or 4th gear, it was much more responsive below 4k RPMS.

I had the A/C on the whole way home too and still noticed these differences. I am going to see how it is on the way into work tomorrow without the A/C on and see if it's even better. The only performance mod that I have on my car right now is the Perrin Lightweight crank pulley. IIRC, I should be between 1/4 & 1/2 tank of gas left and will refill with the same Shell V-power 93 octane that I have been for the last three tanks and I will keep logging mileage.

I will update this thread with the mileage that I get with my car and any other pertinent data. John told me to keep driving it the way I have been and I will continue to do so. I am thinking about buying the DashCommand App for my iPad and use it the entire time but I need to do some research on which hardware is going to be best to connect it.

Howd we do today?

I am just about through the tank of gas that I started with yesterday and I should be filling up tomorrow after work. I drove from home to work twice today and then to the Reading area (15 miles or so) and back to the dealership where we had our fantasy football draft after business hours. The conference room worked great! Overall about 60-70 miles today on the car and one thing that I did notice, is NO MORE IDLE DIP! I will monitor it tomorrow morning on the way into work as well.

The other thing I noticed is that it seems to be getting better as far as power goes. Is it possible the car is learning your adjustments and running better or is it just in my head? I guess the only way to really know would be to dyno it right after the flash and then put some miles on it and re-dyno, but it's too late for that.

I will take a video tomorrow morning on the way in to see if I can catch the idle dip (or lack thereof). It would happen every time at the same spot. The part of the road is about 8-9 miles in length of driving about 65mph and then slowing to a red light where I turn into the industrial park where my dealership is at. The only time it wouldn't happen is if I got the green light and didn't have to stop.

I will also post my mileage on this most recent tank which had 117 miles on it pre-tune and it currently around 300 or so on the trip meter now and still around 1/4 tank. FWIW, the trip computer is still showing 32.3 mpg, but we'll see what the math says when I fill up. This would be a big improvement over my last tank which was 25.9 mpg, but will have around 100 more highway miles than usual. The next tank will tell a better story since it will be a full tank of my normal driving habits & routes.

My gas light illuminated on the way home from work today so I'll be filling up tomorrow. I also ordered a GoPoint BT1 Bluetooth OBD II adapter so I can use it with the Dash Command app on my iPad. I'll be able to collect a lot more information this way and provide John more details of my driving habits, climate, etc. For anyone that is interested, GoPoint is having a sale on their adapters now. $59.99 for the cable and $69.99 for the Bluetooth version.

I know there may have been cheaper options, but I would rather pay more for something that I know will work instead of getting a $14 eBay one and have it work for a week and fail. Plus it seems that the support from Palmer in their forums seem to be pretty good if I do run into any issues.

I'm guessing that it's only going to show lambda and not an exact AFR since I don't have a wideband, but that should just take some math to figure out the AFR. Lambda = AFR / AFR (stoich) right?

I just got back from the gas station and filled up with Shell V-power 93 octane like I have since I started my Fuelly account. The trip odometer had exactly 342.0 miles on it and I reset it at my last fill up. It took 11.110 gallons at $3.839 so this equals 30.78 MPG (FWIW, computer showed 30.5mpg). I had about 117 miles on this tank before the tune which included driving from Hamburg, PA to Edison, NJ for the tune. According to Google Maps, it was a distance of 100 miles even. I probably averaged 70-75mph while on I-78 & I-287, which was about 90 miles of the drive.

This next tank will be a good indication of what the tune has done for fuel economy because it will be the first full tank with my normal driving habits. The last tank increased my avg in Fuelly from 26.3 to 27.4. I should receive my GoPoint BT1 this week and when I do I'll hook up my iPad and use the Dash Command App to log some data.

Damn the cheapest shell near me was $4.11 i wish i cud pay 3.839...did u fill-up when u were completely on E? and im really looking foward to seeing your results

Not completely on E, but had about 20 miles with the light on. The Shell next to my dealership where I work is $4.089 but it's right by Cabela's and off of I-78 and the only 24 hour gas station within 10-15 miles either direction on I-78 so they like to gouge a little. :paddle:

I've been watching your thread as well. After seeing you using the Torque App, I decided to get the Dash Command since I have an iPhone/iPad and not a Droid. I have a feeling that my Avg RPM will be higher than yours, but we'll wait and see when I get everything setup.

Ok yea i filled up as soon as my light turned on..like i was at the gas station and it turned on. I paid 4.11 and that was with cash! with credit it was like 4.21..that's the only reason i could not get a receipt cuz i paid with cash. paid $40 bucks but ended up only needing like 38 bucks and i forgot to take a picture of the gas pump. Yea i thought it was good to run some numbers so ppl can see the consistency of my driving so we can get an accurate number. I have never used the dash app for iphone/pad but i heard good things. i always use it when i drive. Yea i've been driving like a grandma and sucks cuz i just wanna wild out with the car lol..monday i should be done with the test and imma run some 0-60 and post a video up with the android app running to see what my 0-60 times are..my best was like 7.2secs but i only tried twice. Im hoping to hit at least 6.3-6.5 on monday

My GoPoint BT1 came in and got it set up. Accidentally caused a CEL by plugging the adapter improperly. Code U0073. Ooops! Out for a drive and some data logging. :D

EDIT: I guess I should've read the directions first. :bonk: I didn't get the data logging right and it didn't save anything. Going to go out for a drive now to see if I got it right.

just curious as to why people are so obsessed with increasing their gas mileage from a tune?? These cars already get pretty good gas mileage stock... I thought this was a sports car, we need more reviews on the increase in power!

^agreed. Car gets great mpg stock and if tune increases that then that's a great bi-product. However I'm spending the money on the power not the mileage.

Thats crazy you say that..cuz that same code came up for me today too. I think the plug sticks out too much and everytime my leg hits it and comes out just a little. Looking forward to seeing your results. Tell me how that app works out curious to how it is

The power gains are documented here. From the dynos on that post, it looks like 17.33 peak hp. There is also a gain of around 10lb-ft in the torque dip. The last chart shows the "free" power from the extra 400rpm of redline. The reason for my thread here and brichard0625's thread is to log and track fuel mileage. The dyno proves the power gain, the only way to prove the MPG gain is to log miles and data. Hence, these threads.

My Fuelly account (link in sig) has my prior 3 tanks to the tune. The 4th tank has 117 miles of no tune and the other 225 miles with the tune. It does have about 100-150 miles more of highway miles than I would normally drive. FWIW, my trip computer showed 34.3 when I got back from the tune. I may have "tested" (;)) the new redline a few times before I needed to fill up. The trip computer dropped to 30.5 and my actual mileage from the math was 30.78 which is the number that is important. This number represents and increase of about 4mpg compared to my last tank and 2.9mpg compared to my previous best as I tracked on Fuelly. NOTE: I didn't start tracking on Fuelly until recently. My first few tanks were random gas stations. All of the tanks tracked on Fuelly are from Shell V-power 93 Octane.


This program can collect sooooo much data that my head is spinning....lol I'm going to message John and see what info he wants me to log, because if I log everything possible, the file would be HUGE! An 8:08 drive creates a 3MB file and about 5400 lines in an Excel spreadsheet and that is only 9 of the parameters of which there are hundreds!

I love how there is someone who actually cares about MPG. With the gas money you save, you can use it for mods :)

No kidding. I drive 70m each day on my work commute (not counting errands). Just a quick bit of math.

70*5 (work days)*52(weeks per year)/29 (current mixed mpg) = 628 gallons a year

vs

70*5*52/34(reported mixed driving) = 535 gallons a year

At the pump it was $4.30 for a fillup. That saves me about $400 a year. It looks like the tune pays its self off after 2 years of work commutes.

Ok, looking for some feedback as to what data to log. There is so much info that Dash Command can log that it makes ridiculously large files that are really not needed. There's a feature that's called persitent PID's and I'm turning that off so I can select the items to log. It should help reduce the size of the file. I think the rest of this tank will be used to get a feel for how the app works and by the next tank, I hope to have it down so I can log accurate info.

Here are the parameters I was thinking of logging:

Avg Speed, Max Speed
Avg RPM, Min RPM, MAX RPM,
Intake Temp - Min Max Avg
Ambient Temp - Min Max Avg
AFR - Min Max Avg
Elapsed time of drive
Altitude - Min Max Avg

There's a bit of a learning curve with this app. The user manual just covers the very basics.

I had the same thought. I wouldn't mind having a gas mileage map if we can switch out maps but I'd prefer moar powah over mpg.

I think I decided how I am going to track the data. I took screen shots of the app running on the way home from work tonight. I'm driving it like I normally do and I'm not trying to drive more efficiently. I still rips through the gears every now and then like I usually do.

The time and distance in Neutral is from coasting down a hill that I have to and from work. I always costed down in it N before the tune and will continue to do so during the testing as well.

My gas light came on today and I stopped and filled up. This tank had a good bit of aggressive driving, partly because I may have overslept a few times and had to hustle in the morning, which also made it a more fun drive to work as well. :D Top speed of 85mph recorded and MAX RPM over 7k so I definitely wasn't babying it this tank.

The trip meter showed 285.5 miles driven and it took 10.659 gallons for an average MPG of 26.78. The tank can be best compared to my 2nd and 3rd tanks recorded in Fuelly which were 25.18 and 25.96 respectively. Those were the two tanks that had more aggressive driving patterns. So it was still an improvement.

I was able to only log the last 124.7 miles of this tank due to the timing of my OBD II adapter coming in as well as the learning curve of the app. I lost about another 80-100 miles of data.

I may be going to an Autocross this weekend so that will mess with the numbers a bit so what I am going to do is track it like normal and just fill up after the AutoX and monitor everything as usual again. I'm sure the tank with the autox will have terrible mileage readings.

The first tank that I tracked with Fuelly was my last tank during the break in period so most of that driving was sub-4k rpms. I actually never changed my RPM warning beep so it's still set at 4k. I'll try driving the next full tank similar to the break in period one and keep it under 4k. I'm sure I'll cheat a little but hopefully not too much. :thumbsup:

nice thats still a great number considering that driving habits from the data provided. Feels good to know that we can go crazy when we want and not have to suffer at the pump.

Interesting (= - no idea their shop was so close, only a hair over half an hr away from me. Wish I could have tested it since I'm going to Indy Thursday. I guess it would be a good comparison vs stock since it will be completely highway miles.

Here's a half tank update. I may be going to an Autocross tomorrow in Harrisburg so that will mess up the mileage of this tank.

Top speed of 79mph but it wasn't via hard acceleration like the previous tank.

I seemed to have gotten a lot more red lights this tank so it shows through the distance and time in the different gears. It also reflects in the time in neutral as well from sitting at red lights.

Here's the mileage on the trip meter. It shows slightly less than what the mileage shows in Dash Command in the pic above. The discrepancy comes from the app shutting down when I receive a call and the bluetooth picks up. I made the mistake of logging this with my iPhone instead of my iPad. Next tank, I will log it with my iPad so it should be very close.

I am thinking about filling up before I go to the AutoX tomorrow because it will affect the mileage severely I think. I don't really care if having a full tank means extra weight because I am not going to win, but just to have fun and learn the characteristics of the car.

I filled up today and the mileage came out to be 27.97MPG. I had 300.6 miles on the trip meter and purchased 10.747 gallons. Here are some pics of Dash Command that show some stats/data.

The average speed of 35mph shows that i was in more traffic and spent some time at red lights. This will show even more a few pics down when you see the time in neutral & idle times.

Here you can see that I spent more time in the lower gears as well compared to the previous tank. When you use data from this picture and the previous, it shows that I traveled a distance of 10.9 miles in neutral and spent 52+ minutes in neutral as well.

I filled up again today and the car had 307.7 miles on the trip meter and took 11.407 gallons of gas. This calculates to 26.97 mpg. you can see from the data provided below from Dash Command, I didn't baby it this tank either. You can also see the inconsistency of the MPG computer in the car versus DC versus actual math. Since I started this test, I've been getting gas at the same Shell station and even from the same pump

Here the app shows 26.6mpg which is close to what the math says.

This shot shows that there was about 21.4 miles that were not tracked by Dash Command in comparison to the trip meter in the car. This is due to receiving calls while driving and the app disconnecting while the phone call was taking place. It also shows top speed of 102mph so I had some fun this tank. :D

I have an SRT exhaust on order and it should be shipping very soon. (Looking to get tracking info tomorrow on it.) I plan on getting the car dyno'd before and after to see what type of gains I get. I was also thinking of getting dynos done with and without the Perrin pulley to see if there are any changes to put that debate to rest. Worst case I want to dyno with pulley and tune as baseline and then with SRT exhaust.

I'll have to mess around and see if I can get some videos of 0-60 times. I'll have to see if I can drive and hold my video camera at the same time and find a safe spot to do it.

Nobody seems to notice something wrong, so i will ask what's up with those hp and torque numbers they don't seem acurate?

There are some parameters in the app that I don't have set because, honestly, I was too lazy to find them out. Wheel circumference, frontal area, tire rolling resistance are some of them.

I am mainly using the app to record speeds, RPM's, temps and some other stuff. I didn't really think it would accurately measure HP and TQ so I didn't bother trying to find out the missing info.

My SRT exhaust just came in today and I want to get it dyno'd before and after the install to get actual numbers. Since I have tomorrow off, I don't know if I'll be able to wait to get to a dyno to install it and may do it in my driveway or go to a friends house and install it there.

Not to hijack the thread, but I picked up one of those U0073 faults this morning. I was running Torque (one of the first times I have) talking to a cheap ELM327 adapter (been in place less than a week.) I don't THINK I bumped it but it's not impossible. I cleared the code and it seems OK... does this sound about right? Should I be concerned?

Considering that my dealer is 45 minutes away, I'd prefer not to make a special trip there if I don't have to!

FWIW, I get 29.9-30.1 mpg with reasonable driving and occasional full-throttle bursts to redline.

I've gotten that U0073 code a couple times and it's usually when I bump the adapter or remove it and re-install. From what I read online, there is no reason to worry about it.

Hey guys just wanted to say thanks to John for meeting up with me last night we did the tune and holy shit I can say quite a difference. It was pouring pretty hard last night so I didnt get a real chance to play with it too much but I can tell you the idle issue I had is gone and the car and just wants to keep pulling. Fuel mileage Im sure will improve but that will take some time and patience of my right foot staying out of it. Anyone who is buying parts left and right should truly consider this upgrade, I'm a retard and bought all sorts of shit intake, exhaust, crank pulley and with this upgrade I feel as if I am getting maximum performance out of all the parts. If you love your car like I do look into this, I will followup with more information soon.

OK, cool, thanks. I thought so but this was the only mention I could find specific to our cars.

I finished another tank and this one had some lead-footed driving because I received my SRT exhaust and installed it. The trip meter had 175.3 miles on it and it took 7.126 gallons which is 24.6 MPG. The dash showed 26.7 MPG and the app showed 24.8 MPG.

It wasn't a full tank because I was leaving for a trip to MD so I didn't want to have to worry about stopping for gas part way so I filled up. I'm almost through another tank from the trip so that will be my last recorded tank for this thread. I still log it all the time, but won't post in here.
