Quiett catback that doesn't sit so low

Hey guys,

I was set on getting the titanium tipped hks hi power spec l but I've heard it's fairly loud. While that wasn't a deal breaker, I've heard it's got some head throbbing drone even with stock header and front pipe.

I also looked into the q300 and r400 but I've noticed that the mufflers sit fairly low on the ground. Fairly low as in you can see the muffler at the eye level. I know it's a minor thing but I really wanted a setup where the muffler is hidden.

Are there any options that meet the criteria?

Thanks

I think all the quiet ones with a big muffler hang about the same to get the tail pipes angled out correctly and to keep the bumper from parachuting. You could always spray one flat black or run a diffuser.

Perrin 2.5" resonated? Maybe it's my opinion, but that could pass for stock on sound and appearance.

Ultimate racing with all the upgrades (resonators, big muffler and cats if you want cats)

I don't have the HKS Spec-L, but I have the similar Blitz NurSpec VSR StyleD. Both are cannon style mufflers and run 60mm piping (which is pretty conservative at 2.3" WRT 2.5" and 3" exahust). Sound level was good, and no drone at all when I was all stock, catback only.

Catless is a different story.

I originally wanted the HKS system, but eventually went with Blitz because of Catless sound character. Otherwise, I think the two are pretty comparable as far as note and sound level all-stock.

And "loud" is all relative to personal preference. Approximately every 10 dB, the perceived sound is about twice as loud. Stock exhaust is rated at about 83 dB at peak. Most of the loudest Japanese street exhausts are rated 93 dB peak for catback only (per JASMA regulations).

Does the SP drone at all?

86MLR 07-11-2019 06:04 PM

4:2:1 catless header (or punch out the cat in the OEM header), 2.5" overpipe, 2.5" duel resonated front pipe (or OEM frontpipe if you really need a cat, that works) , OEM catback.

All the bits you need for NA performance, nothing you dont.

Disclaimer: Pro tune is a given, money saved on not buying pointless catback can be used for tuning, or beer, lots of beer.

Opinions may vary

Why not stay stock? Cat backs don’t do shit for performance.

I would say no.

Ultimate racing, if you're interested...

Other videos too with or without a turbo. With a turbo it got very bassy, so not drone but the bass fights with my stereo, lol. I still love it.

Honestly I would love to get in on that offer but I don't have enough funds to buy that set at the moment.

My plan was to get the catback then jdl quiet frontpipe overpipe combo then get the jdl v2 kit. I was debating whether I wanted to go na or fi, but going fi is ultimately my goal

I would just use the stock front pipe. Hell if you plan to stay low on the boost you could even keep the stock overpipe

If you want to go FI later then just punch out the cat in the header and get a 2.75 or 3" duel resonated front pipe, then tune to "around" 200hp with Ecutek and a tuner who knows what they are doing.

Costs: The front pipe, a couple of gaskets and a Ecutec licence and tune.

Unless you are just after sound, then don't worry about the tune, you won't make much/any real extra power, but the car will be fine.

Opinions may vary

Is there a chance of the bumper falling off from parachuting or is it just purely aerodynamics?

Just adds to the rear lift at speed.

Pretty happy with the lack of drone and overall noise level of the Thermal. Their resonator is spot on for typical drone. Very quiet idle.

Note I'm running Ace350 and a 3" catted/resonated frontpipe. Stock FP was even quieter and barely any power difference. Had a Nameless header and a JDL header back on the previous BRZ, and it had bad drone at highway speed in particular.

I'm actually planning to stay on low boost so I thought I'd be able to get away with stock overpipe, but I came across this sub and the OP was having some fitment issues with the JDL downpipe to stock overpipe.

I can highly recommend the Greddy Supreme SP catback. It’s quiet on the highway, zero done, but it has a great tone when you get serious. It also fits like an OEM piece. VERY impressed with the fit and finish.

Catless header and JDM tips for your stock exhaust. If you are really set on a new catback the HKS Legamax Premium is very quiet and not super expensive.

You should give us an exact $$ range but, I can vouch for my nameless setup. The catback wouldn't be that different than my axleback sound wise.

I don't get any drone or excessive vibrations even with there solid polyurethane exhaust hanger upgrade and with the 3 inch exhaust and 5 inch mufflers. Highly recommend you get the 2.5 inch with the 5 inch mufflers and it will surely do the job.

Sound and tone preference is super subjective and you really would need to drive around or hear these exhausts in person to get an adequate gauge of what you like.

I also don't recommend going punching out your stock cat like the one poster said as that's quite wasteful. Much better to simply get a nice header and keep your stock header for inspections or going back to stock or selling it. Especially when you plan to get the JDL V2 which can come with a uel or el config for the manifold.

You've got some really decent choices here

Sound is fun. It makes things seem different than they are.

I have a Borla touring the axle back. It sounds good. Simple

I understand I got the GReddy Evo GT on mine. But if he doesn’t want anything too loud then there really isn’t a point in getting one.

Like what @new2subaru said, the borla axleback is quite tame and gives a really nice sound track. OP would probably want something like that if he doesn't want too much loud. Cheap too.
