Jovi's Turbo Build

After 4 years of wanting to own this car, finally had the opportunity to pick up a 2016 Black BRZ with 19k miles on it. I've owned 2009 Jetta and a 2011 GTi over there years. Being a college student this thread will be slow but to build a car right it takes time. I will try my best to use only quality parts when modding and just enjoy the car. I can honestly say after 3 days of ownership it only needs an exhaust. The car feels so good in many ways that can express.

Let's see where this build thread goes. I will post pictures later.

Mod list:
Engine:
Oft stage 2 via taxtrix
Cosworth Dropin Filter
Exhaust:
Remark Ft86speedfactory Exhaust
Stock front pipe
Megan racing header and overpipe

Act XTSS w/Street Flywheel

Suspension:
Password:JDM Ulitamte Strut Tower Brace

SPL front endlinks

Interior:
OLM LED Interior Dome Light
Stainless Steel Shift Knob

Exterior:
Aodhan AH09 18x9.5 +35

Nice day out. New mod from Password:Jdm. Sad that these guys are going away for awhile. Quality of the product is amazing. Car feels more planted and more rigid. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...69dbb3c0b1.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...d37097eb53.jpg

Decided put in the Perrin Shifter Bushing and also an Ebay brand front lower control arm brace. All together $45 spent. Shifting is butter when the bushing is pair with the Perrin transmission support bushingabdn whiteline transmission bushing. NVH has increased but with my stock frontpipe back on things have quieted down a bit.

I also noticed that with control arm brace cornering feels better. I'm more confident in my turns, front end feels more solid. Attachment 189384

Took a few pics yesterday. Just need to get that alignment done and I should be good for now. Hopefully I get a turbo before the year ends. If not then next year is the plan. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5c2a28edfd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...ac8c174857.jpg

Looking good man! Just need to rid those oe tails now ;)

DarkPira7e 07-08-2020 01:30 PM

I think it looks great and vote for keeping OEM tail lights, but it's all up to JOVI-BOI. You know what really sucks? Taking your time planning for turbo. But it's worth it! Be patient and vigilant, it'll happen when it's meant to. Just keep stashing away pennies towards it. I try to put a small portion of my paycheck towards a personal savings that's meant for just fun stuff. So usually $500 or something and just try to be consistent about taking the same amount out each paycheck. It'll add up before you know it and you'll be chopping WRXs in no time.

Joveen 10-25-2020 10:39 PM

So a few updates:

Got new taillights off FTSpeed. OLM carbon fiber tailights. Love the night time look. I'll get around to take more pictures soon. Finally my turbo build is coming along. I bought intercooler piping from JDL coated in red. Freaking amazing in person. Also copped a deal on a JDL UEL manifold with downpipe and wastegate.

Next on the list of mods is:

Turbo
Intercooler
Ecutek. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...402582f40d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...cdca1f3431.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...6596ee601b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...103a66fdfb.jpg

Great find on the manifold and downpipe! Slow and steady means a build will be everything you're hoping for and then some

HaXx 10-27-2020 02:00 AM

Those headers are SO awesome, I wish I were turbo. Your car is going to be so nice, keep the thread going!

Joveen 03-11-2021 02:50 PM

Updates: it's been a while. With school, work and other things going I haven't been posting anything but I have certainly been buying.

Parts that I have acquired since the last post:

Grimmspeed ebcs
Radium fuel rails
Dw 700cc injectors
Verus fuel rail brackets (ordered today).
Turbosmart BOV
Intercooler
Mishimoto plug and play slim fans (being shipped as I type)
Megan Racing radiator (being shipped as I type)
New to me JDL 3" Overpipe.

Will be buying a new gt2860rs turbo from a friend of mine this week and get the all lines necessary from jdl as well. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...27ec04639e.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...032772eacb.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...7c1ca25add.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...b843be34f2.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...e8fafd6fb4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0956f5abe8.jpg

Also a patient at my job backed into my car this week. They won't be going through insurance so if they can fork me that check, I'll most like just get the fender fix and get the morimoto headlights I've been wanting or just get an RBV1 kit [emoji18][emoji18][emoji18]https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...1f43bdf9b8.jpg

Watch out for that BOV, might give you cancer

Chuckls 03-11-2021 08:40 PM

Be careful with the Shitimoto fans. They're known to allow the car to overheat. I'd definitely recommend spending the extra on SPAL fans. / JDL shroud.

Sadly I'm thinking of getting rid of this car. Sigh... after getting that ding and getting the new fenders installed my mind just felt instant regret.

Why? It's your project car, have fun with it. What's the worry over a little ding when you've had this car for a long time now and have also been engaged in your project for some time as well?

Shit always happens, no matter what car you own, fix that baby up and move on and have fun with it.

Majority of the imperfections on my car were caused by other people being careless or just plain unaware. Mine has been:
  • Rear-ended twice(1st was by a cop on his phone and within 6 days of ownership, 2nd was a friend trying to be a hot boi and impress people with a WOT)
  • A crap load of rock chips on my front bumper/windshield
  • Multiple door dings
  • People improperly strapping things down and shit flying off on the freeway
and yet I still love it like the first day I got it.

Someone cracked your headlight? Now have a reason to pull the trigger on those new ones you've been lookin at for some time.

Someone dented your fender? Now have a reason to go widebody if that's what you've been telling yourself since the beginning of your build.

Happens to the best of us but that shouldn't deter you from your project car.

My car (before the 86) was a "normal" family type car that I bought new, customized tastefully, drove for 3 years, 16kmiles, no defects. Then one day I got a broken windshield from crap flying in some high winds in Mojave on my way to Mammoth and on that trip my feelings about the car changed. Rather, that broken windshield and the long drive gave me time to think about my feelings about the car. I realized it was never something I ever enjoyed as I've owned some sort of performance oriented car over the last 30 years I've been driving. I just couldn't get myself to enjoy the car no matter what I did and I couldn't put away that regret from that point on. Since I'm only getting older by the day, I sold the car a few months later and got the 86. I've never regretted that decision, even though its the slowest thing I own even with boost and e85. If I were to get a broken windshield on the 86, I'd get it repaired and never think twice. Honestly, if you're regretting things, it's probably because it's no longer the right car for you or you want a fresh project. It might be time to sell and move on and there is nothing wrong with that. Life is too short. Do what God requires of us but enjoy to the fullest what he's given us too.

Man you just spoke to my Spirit. I have the turbo kit sitting the basement and more mods. Also the new fenders don't even fit right on the car. I scrap everywhere I go now. I try to not even think about it. Also me and girlfriend want to get married soon after school which is in like 2 years and having to do payments and stuff on this car just doesn't seem worth it anymore.

Selling every aftermarket part and making payments until December could get an even trade off I think. I'm still at 66k miles now. I miss having a turbo car and I keep saying if could just install the kit things would get better or change but idk.

Sounds like you got a lot going on and more important stuff than cars at the moment but I'd give yourself some time to think about what's important to you now.

From your list of parts, it also sounds like you really love modding cars as a hobby and that feeling is likely never going to go away. Even if you sell this, you're sure to want something else very soon after. Sell this car if you don't want it anymore but I wouldn't sell it just for the money or some mechanical or cosmetic issues, which can all be resolved.

As an alternative, if you don't really hate the car and still have the feeling to keep it, maybe spend some time/money correcting those things you don't like first. I know if I get too many little broken things it starts to bother me, but once I fix or replace them, the good feelings return. Never let the list get too long. Also removing some aftermarket parts may not be bad either as sometimes they can make the car worse than stock.

I got tired of scraping too so I replaced my front 245 with 255 and raised the front up a little. Still looks just as great but now I can go places and get in and out of driveways and I enjoy the car even more. Its amazing what 3/4" can do.

Anyhow, give yourself time. Enjoy the car. Take it for a nice long summer drive and think about whats right for you. :burnrubber:

Clutch finally went out. Since the wedding is at the end of the month. I decided to get new parts. Boost is still the goal. Keep the dream alive. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...76630c12ef.jpg
