Electric motor noise under car
So I got home yesterday at 3pm. Parked the car in the garage. Around 930 pm I went into the garage which is quite silent. All of a sudden I start hearing what seems like an electric motor running. At first I thought it might be someone outside but the noise persisted. Searching around it was apparent that it was my car that was the source of the noise. I got on the floor and know that the noise was coming from the rear of the car. What could possibly be running on a cooled down not running for 6 1/2 hours car? It kind of reminded me of the self leveling motor for the rear suspension on a previous Cadillac I formerly owned. Anyone?

The car runs some sort of leak test every once in a while when idle long enough. Nothing to worry about, your car is doing what it should.

read your owner's manual.

Evap system self check:
Noise from under vehicle after turning off the engine Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check and, it does not indicate a malfunction. |
It's spring time, that's the sound of a swarm of crickets during the mating season.

Huh. Never would have guessed that. And not to be a **** but why in the hell would I check my owners manual when I hear a noise? Okay it apparently is in there. But is there a section on TOB noise? So for someone to be "that guy" and mention the owners manual because I heard a strange noise. Get over yourself. Thanks to those who mentioned about the evap test

TOB noise is abnormal and should be checked by a dealer or qualified mechanic. This noise is specifically mentioned in the manual and you're about the 500th person to ask this same question on these forums. |

every single person that has asked this question either 1) bought the car used and it is missing the owner's manual, or 2) has not read the owner's manual past the cover.
On the 2018 BRZ Owner's Manual it is on page 16, when I had my 2013 it was on a different section of the booklet. I understand that cars are often times fun to "learn as you go" but the book provides a lot of useful information about the car... |

1. Searched the forum for this well known noise or even basic googling: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=17147 http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16534 2. Read the owners manual As someone else said there's maintenance interval info that even helps you from getting scammed at the dealership as well. It's only a logical idea to page through the owners manual when you buy a brand new vehicle. |

Now back to the regularly scheduled posting about buzzing test things in the undercarriage and such. I feel the solution is to just turn it on every so often so it has no time to decide to test itself. Problem solved. |

Then there's reading the owners manual cover to cover (which I did) 4 years ago and forgetting 3/4's of it...
I don't recall this "issue" even with the 500 questions asked about it. :iono: |

Just curious. When you rent a car do you read the owners manual from cover to cover? Or do you adjust the seat and the mirrors and take off on your merry way? |

LOL, RTFM is just a step too far these days.

Second, I rent a lot of cars, and while I don't read the manual, I often do consult it (if it's included in the car, which sometimes it isn't) if there's a feature I want to disable or the car does something unexpected. To be fair, that note was in an obscure location in the older owners' manuals, so you might even read it cover to cover and miss it. Not sure where it is in the newer ones. What has always puzzled me instead is why so many people who ask about it think something is wrong with their cars. If I hear a clunk or a scraping sound, yeah, maybe I'll wonder if everything is all right. But the sound of an electric motor running is not usually the sound that something is broken. "OMG my tank is leaking, and the gasoline built itself a motor to help itself escape!" I was working in a conference room yesterday where we could hear the elevator motors coming on and off in the machine room across the hall, and nobody's first thought was to summon building maintenance. |

If not, I don't care because I don't own the car. As long as I return it in the same condition that I took delivery of it, I am not responsible for any mechanical issues. That's the whole point of a rental. Anyhow, read the manual or don't read the manual. The same questions will always come up from the same folks in the future, and the same answers will be provided... |
