Where to put this bloody phone?

Hi all,

So I have recently become the proud owner of an 86 and am so far loving everything about this car except for the fact that I can't seem to find a good place to stash my phone while driving.

I have a galaxy s8 which is WAY to big for that itty bitty pocket in the counsel bellow the temp controls.

I could throw it in the glove box or leave it in my pocket while driving, but that doesn't really help if I want to glance over at the screen when using GPS.

I was wondering if anyone has found an off-the-shelf phone holder they liked or created their own as well as where you ended up mounting it.

Thanks all!

Sapphireho 06-16-2019 10:50 PM

Turn it off and drive.

soundman98 06-16-2019 11:13 PM

I connect bluetooth, and then drop it on the passenger seat. I rarely ever look at it after that.

Mr.ac 06-16-2019 11:56 PM

You bought the wrong car.

A nice Civic SI has every mod under the sun even Tuner brand phone holders.

So sell your current pos 86 and get the more powerful Civic SI. If you want more power Type R.

Hello MrFancyPants and welcome to ye ol forum -

My old phone fits (slanted) in that pocket below the controls. I do have a aftermarket head unit with a screen for navigation.

If you wish to glance at your phone's screen while driving, their are hundreds of aftermarket holders out there - just pick one - :)

Pay not much nevermind to those two smarty-asses up above - :D

Yeah don't listen to soundman98 or Sapphireho! :paddle:

I'm (not) joking humfrz... ;). :paddle:
Clearly it's hard to realize you bought the wrong car, and it's a huge pain in the butt returning a car, but what is more important? Having a car where you can't even mount a cell phone? Or having a car that was built around a smart phone?

Did I mention the new Civics Si have Apple Car Play and Android? :happyanim:

In the glove box, at an angle in the center console like Mr Humfrz said, door pocket, gym back on passenger seat, gym bag on back seat, gym bag in boot, Mrs handbag if I'm lucky.

A phone will sit on the intake plenum for a while too, if you forget it's there that is. (I was using the phone torch to look at something, and forgot about it, until the phone rang, I looked at the in-dash screen, I looked where the phone usually sits, at a angle in the center console, I then slowly pulled over and removed the phone from under the bonnet, yes I was explaining this to my Mrs as I was doing it, it was her that rang me).

I had the s7, I currently have the s9+. I can stand it vertically wedged between the modular cup holder, and the front of the cubby. It will stay there, but you'll need to finesse it to avoid it holding down the power or Bixby button. Usually my phone stays on the passenger seat on mute.

ProClip makes an excellent mount with adapters to fit almost any portable device:

I use a driver side AC vent mount and a magnetic strip on the back of my phone.

I have a Pixel 2 XL, and usually just slip it in the driver's side bottle holder, fits there very well. I don't use it for navigation though so that works for me. Probably wouldn't work for you if you need it for that.

Georgia is a "no touch" law, which means you can't have your phone in your hand at any time driving, and cannot use the controls on it directly (you can use your headunit controls). There is an exception for NAV if the phone is mounted (you still can't have it in your hand), but not sure how you would prove that is what you were doing.

Kids Heart 06-17-2019 11:54 AM

I use a Neo Grab mount

+ for Proclip...installed one after I bought the car and haven't had any issues.

gpvecchi 06-17-2019 03:53 PM

Kuda 1240 (faux leather) or 1245 (real lether) looks the best to me. You can even mod it with alcantara if your car has the same interior.

DandoX 06-17-2019 05:03 PM

I toss a microfiber cloth in that center area and throw my phone in there, cloth so the phone doesn't jostle about and make noise in corners. I also sometimes put it in the drink holder on the door. When I bought my car my super old iphone fit perfectly in that cubby, but since then phones have gotten to big. I hate ALL phone mounts, they all suck and look bad.

So there is no where good for your phone to go, I suggest you make your next phone purchase to cater to what will fit in that cubby.

Hi,

One option could be to get the base in the picture. It’s very solid and does not move while driving and you can put it any place on the dash, even on the little bump between the SW and mid vents (gets the shape easily).

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8bfabdc4f1.jpg

I use it with a scosche magic mount.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f18beeebb6.jpg

Anyone who has a wireless charging phone can also use the supporting magic mount.

Check the image below with my old phone holder. The base of the magic mount is very similar to this.

Hope it helps!

Thanks

Well in theory they have to prove that's not what you were doing...

I have an off-brand suction cup mount stuck on the small window on the door, which I use if I need to navigate with my phone. Otherwise it's in my pocket or, rarely, charging in the bottle holder. I have the USB routed to the driver's side door to let that setup work while charging.

True, but the fine isn't huge (it's $50 for first offense and $100 for the second) so I doubt anyone goes to court to fight it. At least the 5 or so people I know that have been ticketed for it didn't bother.

I agree. I toyed around with getting a strong magnet to attach to the back side of the dash trim, then a thin metal plate with maybe some felt over it for the back of my phone case so I could just 'stick' it to the dash.

In the end though, since I really can control all the functions I need from the headunit, I just leave it in my pocket or but it in the door cup holder.

RToyo86 06-18-2019 07:55 AM

This was my solution to mounting my phone. I wanted it off to the side near the head unit.
I got the bracket from a user on this forum who 3D prints it him self. I then wrapped it with something I had laying around, and finished off with a Magic mount.

This is similar to my solution. Instead of the bracket, I just taped a couple neodymium magnets to the backside of the trim panel and used the magnet-backed scosche magic mount. It doesn't survive serious potholes (unless the object you're mounting is tethered to an OBD2 or something similar - I use it to mount my OFT when I'm logging, etc.). But it works well enough.

I bought a 4inch usb type c cable that fits perfectly and makes everything look clean with less cables around when connected and mounted there.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1d0475a0c6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f3ebb2b9a3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...b7bed017f4.jpg

In a '13, I put the double cupholder thingy in its rear position and put my phone in the space in front 9f it. Right where the cigarette lighter is. Now where te f do 8 put my backpack? And do I get in first holding the bag outside, then put it on the pass seat? Or from outside, throw it onto the pass seat, then get in. I'm not going to start with getting out.

+2 for ProClip mount. Not cheap but solid, well-made, and secure.

SlipGrips mounts + RAM setup on the windshield is the best bet, or the Scosch Magic Mount, if you like Waze. Mostly you should just ignore it and drive.

EzyBreezy 06-19-2019 02:38 PM

I personally use the Mophie Charge Force Vent Mount with the Note 8 Mophie case. I am sure theres a mount that suits your needs.

Things I do not like..
• Not every none Mophie case with the plate thing fits on this vent mount.
• Every few months I occasionally have to push the vent mount back into the center vent.

Things I do like..
• Wireless Charging makes it easier for me to just slap my phone on the vent mount.
• The viewing angle horizontally is perfect for me personally.
• I have been using this since Galaxy S7, Note 7 (Pre Recall), Galaxy S7 Edge, Note 8.

I want to replace my head unit with the Android Head Units or Android Auto, specifically one that can support Waze and preferably one that I do not have to plug my phone into.

I have two magnetic holders, one in the drivers side AC vent and the other goes into the CD slot and holds the phone higher in an easier to see spot, it's also closer to the power port for charging.

Big fan of ram mounts.
I use the suction cup with the universal phone holder and stick it on the windshield on the left of the steering wheel.

Gopro shoe bolted to the bottom of the dash insert.

Gopro swivel mount + gopro phone holder from amazon.

This thing is absolutely rock solid, and you can remove it and only have the shoe nicely tucked under the dash insert.

mrhayes1 10-16-2019 06:48 PM

I put a slim magnet on the back on my phone and stuck an small magnetic mount to my dash, just to the right of the head unit. It is awesome and cant believe I didn't' do it years ago. There is really no place to put your phone and if you drive like I do your phone will fly off the passenger seat and smack on the passenger door all the time. You can buy these on Amazon or whatever for like $10. It looks super clean. Also nice because in Arizona its hot in the summer and your phone is right in front of the vent which keeps it cool on those 115 degree days.

DandoX 10-16-2019 07:19 PM

I take my phone put it in the center armrest area, then put the arm rest down. If I need directions I turn on voice gps. I also dont have a touch screen HU, just the basic OG HU in the first FRS's. I mean I have a shitty suction cup mount that sucks, I use it maybe once a year for the rare time I travel in the FRS.

Try accepting the fact that you don't need to look at your phone and put it away in the center area, you really don't need it. The bluetooth audio control is more than enough. It can be liberating.

Also every phone mount ever sucks balls.

Dadhawk 10-16-2019 08:27 PM

I usually just stick mine in the driver's side door pocket, or lay it in the cupholder. With Georgia's no touchy touchy cell phone law, you can't use it for much of anything anyway.
